I did, beautifully made film
Won 4 Oscars

But I found the central character Barry Lyndon well played by Ryan O'Neill
totally unsympathetic
He treated his wife and son appallingly
Report ebulGery September 22, 2014 7:51 PM BST
His character was described as an Irish Rogue
I would say more a barsteward myself

Sarabande by Handel.

Saw Barry Lyndon last week - can't praise it too highly. There is no way in the world they would make a film like this today.

I agree Ebulgery - I sided with the young English lord...to me own horra, begorra...Surprised

Agreed, Vel.  I think it's a terrific film.
Report Velasquez September 22, 2014 7:58 PM BST
Don't suppose anyone ever saw it on the big cinema screen?
Report Muntz Street September 22, 2014 7:58 PM BST
I didn't, but wish I had.

Me too, Muntz. I saw Lawrence of Arabia on the big screen when it was re-issued.

Ryan O'Neill was a bit of a wild character himself, so well cast
as was his daughter Tatum of course

Gorgeous-looking film. Much misunderstood upon its release by reviewers expecting another 2001 or Clockwork Orange.
Like you guys, I would love to see this in the cinema.

Ebulgery, there's a bit in John McEnroe's autobiography where Ryan O'Neill challenges McEnroe to a game like squash or racquetball for a size-able bet and McEnroe is thinking "You're kidding me..." so they play and Ryan O'Neill is a really dirty, competitive player and he wipes the floor with McEnroe...he then challenges McEnroe to a boxing match but McEnroe declines...Laugh
