He is set to take over late night TV in the US when replaces Craig Ferguson on The Late Late Show next month.
But things have not gotten off to a good start for James Corden after he was blasted by rival David Letterman, who called him a 'tubby kid' and questioned his commitment to the new job.
Speaking to guest host Regis Philbin on The Late Late Show, David said: 'Did they give you this show? I thought it was that chubby guy that got the show, from Great Britain, from England.'

Craig departed the show on December 19 but James will not take over until March 23rd and Regis was guest hosting for two nights.
Letterman will be stepping down from his own late night chat show in May with Stephen Colbert taking the reigns in September.
And the 67-year-old funnyman also questioned James' loyalty to his new gig, which will see him relocate with wife Julia and their two children, to Los Angeles.

And it would seem comedian James Corden, who makes his debut this month as anchor of The Late, Late Show – one of America’s top talk shows – is right to be concerned.
Corden and his new employers, CBS, are so worried that American audiences won’t get his British brand of humour that they have staged a secret ‘dress rehearsal’ to gauge reaction and ensure he is word perfect for his first live show on March 23, when Hollywood superstar Tom Hanks will be a guest.

A source on the programme revealed they needed to ‘iron out the glitches and find out what works’, adding: ‘The US audience is totally different to anything James has experienced before. It’s been a real rollercoaster of highs and lows.’
The Mail on Sunday gained exclusive access to Corden’s rehearsal last week, and while some of the 200 invited audience – many of them professional actors paid to ‘fill’ seats – seemed charmed by his laid-back delivery, most complained that they were ‘baffled’ by his sense of humour and found his estuary accent difficult to understand.
Though he told interviewers last week that he intends to ‘shake up’ late-night TV in the US, the new show is surprisingly formulaic.
Corden, 36, sits behind a desk topped with an old-fashioned rotary phone, while guests sit on a blue sofa in front of a fake backdrop of Los Angeles. There is a small bar set up in the corner of the studio, staffed by barman Ian, and a house band led by wild-haired musician Reggie Watts.
The comic opened the ‘show’ with a monologue of jokes, including one about last week’s scandal over US Secret Service members who crashed into a White House barrier after a drunken party. ‘They’ve got a new motto – to protect and serve me another,’ he told his audience.
Guest Susan Wittan, from Rockville, Maryland, who attended Thursday’s rehearsal said: ‘I’d never heard of James Corden until today.
'He seems to be a very friendly, nice guy but I didn’t get some of his jokes and I found him a bit hard to understand at times. He speaks quite quickly and used British words like mate.
‘I enjoyed some of the humour but I’m not sure how well he will go down in America.’

The dress rehearsal came amid increasing concerns that Corden, who has lost 6st in the run-up to the show’s launch, has been under tremendous stress, doubtless mindful that many other Britons, such as Ant and Dec, and Russell Brand, tried and failed to crack the American audience.
While friends and family insist his new, slimline image is the result of a conscious effort to look svelte for his big launch, others close to the show say his fear of failure is the real reason that he has lost so much weight.

Corden, who relocated to LA at Christmas with wife Julia and their children Max, three, and 14-week-old Carey, is on a reported £1.5 million-a-year deal.
He admits CBS has taken ‘a huge gamble’ bringing him to the United States, saying: ‘I don’t know if I’m making a huge mistake. But I’d rather regret doing something than not doing something.
‘It’s madness really. When I got the job I’d never even been on an American talk show.’
Before Thursday night’s rehearsal began Corden, clearly on edge, spoke to the audience.
He told them: ‘This is a dream come true for me. If you’d told the 12-year-old me that I would be doing this I would never have believed it.’
He also spoke about his children, saying: ‘When you have one kid it’s like having a pet. When you have two it’s like getting the whole zoo.’
But he appeared distracted at times, with one onlooker commenting: ‘He seemed like he had a lot on his mind. There were times during the moments by himself when he looked stressed and worried.’
He interviewed comedian Whitney Cummings, of sitcom 2 Broke Girls, and actor Eric Christian Olsen, from crime show NCIS: Los Angeles. Both are CBS shows.
When Cummings joked about Britain being ‘a nation of alcoholics’ Corden replied: ‘I would refute that although I am aware that I’m the only late-night host with a bar in his studio.’

‘There were skits and jokes and a house band. He made the effort to engage the audience and invited everyone up on to the stage at the end to dance.
'But there’s nothing revolutionary about it. He’s likeable but won’t win any originality awards. He was trying very hard, though. The tone of the show is sweet.’
Amelia Darwin, who also watched the show, added: ‘James Corden worked really hard and is a likeable man. But I’m not sure he’s got what it takes to be a huge success here. The show is too similar to everything else out there.
'I wish him well but I won’t be tuning in.’

James Corden has been given the thumbs-up by an American audience after the British star made his eagerly anticipated debut as host of a late-night US chat show.
The 36-year-old actor and writer has taken over at the helm of The Late Late Show on CBS - succeeding Scottish comic Craig Ferguson - and has admitted the move is a huge career gamble.
And, after weeks of rehearsals and a blitz of publicity in the US, Tom Hanks and Mila Kunis joined Corden for the recording of the first show in front of a live audience in Los Angeles.
Kunis delivered an exclusive for the debut show by - almost - confirming that she and partner Ashton Kutcher had got married.
One group, who had travelled from Orange County to be in the audience, told Sky News that Corden, to use a phrase of his, had "nailed it".

Kristin Latourelle said: "It was really amazing and really funny. He was adorable and wonderful and just really fun and he just seemed like a kid in a candy store having the greatest time of his life.
"It was really fun to be part of that and, being on the first show, the excitement level was high and he was just so giddy."
Brianne McDowell added: "I have never experienced anything like it. He was gracious and happy to have everyone there and he was so thankful for the opportunity.
"He was personable, talking about his family and his kids. He was really funny."
Katie Wahrenbrock said: "It was so much fun. He is so funny and talented and the accent was fabulous."

The biggest change for US viewers is that Corden has insisted all of the guests stay on stage together throughout the show.
Melanie Meegan said: "That's not something you see here a lot of the time. I know in the UK that The Graham Norton Show has all the guests on at the same time.
"I really liked that idea, it makes it more personal."
Before the first show was recorded, Corden said: "It is different to everything I have ever done. I don't even really know what I'm about to do. I'm talking like I have any authority but I know nothing."

But Debra Birnbaum, executive editor at Variety magazine, is convinced that Corden will succeed.
She told Sky News: "He's an unknown quantity so there is a certain risk inherent in that but I go back to the idea that he is a blank slate and he's got to introduce himself.
"There's a challenge in that but he's tremendous personality, people know him from his success on Broadway and in the movie he just did, so let's see what he can do for us."
Corden says the biggest challenge for his new show, which is shown after midnight every night, is keeping viewers awake.
From the summer, it will follow the new-look Late Show featuring David Letterman's replacement Stephen Colbert.

The biggest change for US viewers is that Corden has insisted all of the guests stay on stage together throughout the show.
Melanie Meegan said: "That's not something you see here a lot of the time. I know in the UK that The Graham Norton Show has all the guests on at the same time.
"I really liked that idea, it makes it more personal."
Before the first show was recorded, Corden said: "It is different to everything I have ever done. I don't even really know what I'm about to do. I'm talking like I have any authority but I know nothing."

But Debra Birnbaum, executive editor at Variety magazine, is convinced that Corden will succeed.
She told Sky News: "He's an unknown quantity so there is a certain risk inherent in that but I go back to the idea that he is a blank slate and he's got to introduce himself.
"There's a challenge in that but he's tremendous personality, people know him from his success on Broadway and in the movie he just did, so let's see what he can do for us."
Corden says the biggest challenge for his new show, which is shown after midnight every night, is keeping viewers awake.
From the summer, it will follow the new-look Late Show featuring David Letterman's replacement Stephen Colbert.

Maybe he is not up against much. It may be an acquired taste but most of the American chat show hosts leave me cold. Even Letterman seems stilted. Presumably much of the success is down to the guests anyway.

He has talent, in fact his speech on SPOTY was very funny, BUT he's not a naturally funny man and needs a script, unlike for example Kenneth Williams.I'm certain he's not going to make a good interviewer. Can't see him making a success of this venture.

Having all the guests stay on together has been done for years. Even in America, i remember Oliver Reed and Shelley Winters having a ding dong on the Johnny Carson show. Plus lets not forget Parkinson had all the guests on together as well.b Wossy does it as well.

Piers Morgan was an wincing failure over there (youtube Sarah Silverman trying to help) but if I compare Morgan or Corden to an American of similar talent making it over here, there is room for optimism. Ruby Wax is awful but gets by.
Muhammad Ali and Clint Eastwood, and a couple of others, on David Frost, in 1970 - at the same time. And a speed bag. Beat that, James Corden!
