Just finished my degree as a mature student. Nothing exciting Geography, and have been working part time in a customer service role whilst studying to keep me going.
Decided that I would quite like a career on the trains and they appear, (for a similar customer facing role like I am in currently in), to pay rather well in comparison.
Anybody have any experiences working for any of them??

One of my brothers is a train driver, he gets £55K basic plus whatever amount of overtime he cares to do. Add to that free first class travel anywhere in the U.K. for him and his family. Sounds not too bad but he doesn't really enjoy the shift work. having said that, he always says the staff get very well treated and you are in a union so never get hassle from anyone as it's simply not tolerated.

unlike SB brother we unsafeguarded staff(joined after privatization)
have it poorly unless you are a driver
outside of London unless a driver wage is between 19-25 grand
no first class travel and only free travel on line you work on
leisure use only for family

I think that's pretty good, especially compared to a bus driver.
Is he a tube train driver? I think their basic is £50-55k.
Not sure how much other train drivers earn but I understand Euro Tunnel drivers are well paid

i believe are around the £40,000 mark and did not want a pay rise
last year, but a reduction in working hours due to tax threshold.

Would nt want to be a train driver but thanks for the replies. Good pensions too from what little research I ve done.
I wouldn`t have believed that anybody could earn over a grand a week for driving a train. WOW! Well done Jimmy Knapp, what a leader!

But Jimmy, 6ft 2in of Scottish socialist, was not in fear of the Iron Lady. He just didn't think much of her policies; and it didn't take long for her to discover that."

A train driver would be a great job for someone with a degree in Geography. Wouldn`t get lost.

Yes tommy, Bob Crow was another terrific leader fighting for worker`s rights. I really liked and respected him. Sad that he died so young.

Sounds like a good deal to me.
Many professional-type employees earning between 30 and 70k will be working more than the standard 37 hour week and won't get paid overtime.
They may well also have to pay £3k pa or more just to get to and from work
