Gearge Galloway taken to hospital

George Galloway has been taken to hospital with a suspected broken jaw after he was attacked on a London street, his spokesman has said.

The Respect MP was posing for pictures with people in Golborne Road, Notting Hill, when a man allegedly set upon him. Police were quickly at the scene and arrested a man.

The MP's spokesman said he had bruising and was in "a pretty bad shape".

He said the alleged attacker had been shouting something about the Holocaust.

"George was posing for pictures with people and this guy just attacked him, leapt on him and started punching him," the spokesman said.

"It appears to be connected with his comments about Israel because the guy was shouting about the Holocaust."

Mr Galloway was interviewed under caution by police earlier this month after he made controversial comments about Israel.

The MP for Bradford West said in a speech that Bradford had been "declared an Israel-free zone" and urged people to reject all Israeli goods, services academics and tourists.

His spokesman said he did not know whether the attacker was an Israeli, an EDL-supporter, or whether he had another motive.

He said Mr Galloway also suffered a suspected broken rib and severe bruising to the head and face in the attack, which happened on Friday evening.

The MP was taken to Mary's Hospital, Paddington, following the incident and is expected to remain there overnight.

Meanwhile, a Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed police had been called to Golborne Road at around 19:40 BST after a man was assaulted in the street.

"Officers attended. The suspect was found a short time later and stopped," the spokesman said.

"He was arrested on suspicion of ABH (actual bodily harm) and taken to the south London police station."

A man was arrested and cautioned in 2008 in connection with an attack against Mr Galloway.

The politician needed medical treatment after he was pelted with a rubber stress ball while campaigning in an open-top bus in London.

Hopefully this will keep him quiet for a while.

I've no time for the buffoon Galloway but he should have the right in a free society to say what he said. The point is we are no longer a free society and had he been making those comments about other ethnic minorities there would have been uproar and possible charges.

I also believe that in a free society whoever has filled him in should have the right to remonstrate with him but in a civil manner. Attacking 60 yeard old men doesn't strike me as an especially honourable thing to do and the law should now run it's course.

Galloway is  quite an old man now and I bet this Jewish bloke was a young guy.

Very few things pierce my carapace of ennui and disinterest, but George Galloway getting a few straighteners has made my weekend before it's even started.

When this guy has paid for this assault, I'm going to go and find him and shake his hand. It's slightly regrettable that he didn't beat Galloway to death with his bare hands, but at least he tried.

You may not agree with what Galloway (and I very rarely do) has to say but he has the right to say it. What people don't have is the right to take the law into their own hands when they take exception to this.

Jihadists don't like what the west say and therefore believe this gives them a fair agenda to wage war. That is only one step removed from a physical assault.

He went to far with his rant on Israel but at the same time, when Israel were using completely disproportionate attacks on Gaza and with Cameron not saying a word, I didn't see as much contempt for him then as being shown towards Galloway now, what's worse, Cameron a leader of a country turning a blind eye whilst kids are being killed on beaches and in hospitals and schools or Galloway going on a rant asking to boycott Israeli goods?

I agree with Charwell, a 32 year old beating the living daylights out of a 60 year old for having an opinion be it strong, is out of order, you'd have to be a bit of a knuckle dragger to think otherwise. Always enjoyed his radio show on talksport but don't agree with much of what he says either.

I'm not condoning the violence used against him but Galloway does spout bile at times and goes way over the top in his condemnation of anything he disagrees with which, given the amount of nutters roaming the street, isn't the cleverest thing to do.
As regards his recent attack on the Israeli's he much further than just asking his constituents to boycott Israeli goods he urged them to refuse to serve Jews or have anything to do with them.
That's the mark of a bitter and twisted man with a hatred for Israel and it's people rather than someone showing sympathy to the Palestinians.

Unfortunately this is what happens when you have unbalanced law.  How is it right that Galloway is allowed to openly spout anti-Semite bile in this day and age?  Jews are obviously going to feel unfairly dealt with by the UK's law and policing and are going to take matters into their own hands.
