four Soviet diplomats were kidnaped last September(1985) by Muslim extremists who demanded that Moscow pressure the Syrian government to stop pro-Syrian militiamen from shelling rival Muslim positions in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli.
The militiamen did not cease their attacks, and the body of one of the Soviet diplomats, Arkady Katkov, was found a few days later in a field in Beirut.
They secured the release of three kidnapped Soviet diplomats in Beirut by castrating a relative of a radical Lebanese Shia Muslim leader, sending him the severed organs and then shooting the relative in the head.
The KGB then apparently kidnapped and killed a relative of an unnamed leader of the Shias' Hezbollah (Party of God) group, a radical, pro-Iranian group that has been suspected of various terrorist activities against Western targets in Lebanon.
Parts of the man's body, the paper said, were then sent to the Hezbollah leader with a warning that he would lose other relatives in a similar fashion if the three remaining Soviet diplomats were not immediately released. They were quickly freed.

The KGB was and presumably still is, on the mark. The west is dealing with psychopaths who's only fear is for themselves. Add in the fact that the said psychopaths presumably due to their religion, prize their masculinity above all, the KGB knew exactly what to do. Perhaps the "Special Forces" of the UK, USA, etc. could dish out similar treatment to selected targets.
We did with the 'alleged' Shoot To Kill policy in Northern Ireland but the British Establishment sh@t their pants about it, never mind the enemy was operating such a policy

I certainly think this Soviet style policy is worth a try in the UK. Deep down, the sort of people who behead harmless innocent civilians, and gun down pencil-wielding civilians are of course completely gutless.

Are we all sure this is not just another 'Urban Myth'? I reckon the OP's hostages were released after diplomatic negotiation.

The deterrents & punishments go nowhere close to fitting the crimes.
I'd like punishments to go much, much further.
e.g. I'd like the punishment for murder to be a prolonged period of torture (to be set by the relatives of the victim) and then a death sentence.

I agree. The punishment should fit the crime, otherwise it is not a deterrent. Although, I'm not sure how one would deter somebody who is eager to blow themselves up in order to reach the 'after-life'! 
this is exactly what I mean when I say these jihadists are bottle merchants. Do you see them running riot in Putin's backyard? do you f(_)ck they would sh1t themselves.

I don't see many attacks in the "Great Satan' USA either since the US started the fightback after 9/11, and most particularly since the US dished out some summary justice against Bin Laden.

I laughed when I read that but only because I remembered the usual suspects on here condemning that action.
All indignant that that wasn't the way for a civilised nation to act but as you say it seems to have worked.
We need to start fighting fire with fire and assassinate their leaders.

The Israelis starting assassinating leaders of terror groups in the 70s. Accomplishes sweet feck all does that tactic.

I seem to remember a similar sitaution with hostages John McCarthy and Terry Waite...who were held hostge by Muslim terrorists for years.
They (Muslim terrorists) also grabbed a couple of Ruskies as hostages ...the Ruskies (KGB) then got hold of a couple of Mullahs ...off with their knobs, knobs in mouth, bullet in head sent them back with the message ...how many more would you like ?
Ruskies immediately released unharmed!
