Blacbarn, what says you about someone like Peaches Geldof? A woman with young kids who kills her self with heroin. No money worries but leaves behind complete and utter devastation to her family who have to pick up the pieces. My girlfriends Mum chucked herself under a train when she discovered her husband's infidelity, she has never got over it to this day. It's a selfish act.

Report Tony Broke August 13, 2014 11:10 AM BST
the people who describe suicide as a elfish act clearly have no empathy, tho on saying that I suppose if you have children the act is selfish in theory. However, the mind, and emotions, are not always strong enough to withstand the everyday stresses and heartache of today's world. Everyone is different, for eg. I have a wife and children, but have sometimes felt, in my many dark moments, that I would sooner not be here, so I suppose you could almost say my children and their undoubted reaction 'could' be saving me from that final act.
One person may say they cant do it as itd hurt their families, another wont because of their religious belief, while another will just end their life because they cant cope any longer, no matter the terrible consequences.
Report Tony Broke August 13, 2014 11:11 AM BST
...and reading guy de Maupassant, listening to joy division, and watching films like the elephant man certainly don't help lighten one's darker moods!

The brain is not functioning normally when people commit suicide. There's no rational thought process I.e weighing up the pros and cons of their actions. All there is a a deep black hole and an overwhelming conviction that the only way out is to die.
Thoughts of the consequences of their actions , the effect it will have on loved ones just doesn't come into the equation at all. Death  is the only answer/ solution.

This is why coroners use the expression ' whilst the balance of their mind was disturbed '
Report Thin and Crispy August 13, 2014 11:31 AM BST
Years ago there was a more common expression, still used by coroners "Took his own life while the balance of his mind was disturbed"  I think this is a far more accurate explanation of why some people kill themselves.

To generalise by calling it a selfish act, which of course it is, is very simplistic and shows ignorance of the complex nature of mental health.

Fox News host Shepard Smith said this. (He has since apologized, 'To the core of my being, I regret it. It just came out of my mouth. And I’m so sorry,' he said)

When Smith spoke about Williams’ daughter, Zelda, the host said:

One of the children he so loved, one of the children grieving tonight. Because their father killed himself in a fit of depression.” ]

Smith goes on, and his angry tone doesn’t falter.

“It’s hard to imagine, isn’t it? You could love three little things so much, watch them grow, they’re in their mid-20s, and they’re inspiring you, and exciting you, and they fill you up with the kind of joy you could never have known.”

And yet, something inside you is so horrible or you’re such a coward or whatever the reason that you decide that you have to end it. Robin Williams, at 63, did that today.”

Not sure about this but one thing that research has discovered is that the suicide rates in the non celeb population increase markedly after the death of a celebrity. So in essence the suicide of someone as high profile as Robin Williams will cause many others to commit suicide.

When one has depression, one is in a state or mental pain all the time.
One can see no way out of it, life is so appallingly black that in itself hurts

If one sees no hope of this changing the most sensible thing is to commit suicide.

Although I would hardly call that cowardly, because to take ones own life itself takes some courage.
So I would not call Robin a coward.

In fact the only reason I am alive myself is because I am a coward, even though I wanted to commit suicide
because of depression I could not quite get the courage to do it. Although if the depression had not lifted slightly
in the end I would probably have had to do it. But it is no easy thing. A person is in some pain
to take ones own life. People do not do it for a laugh.

As for being selfish, well Robin may have felt his family were well catered for, so he was under no
obligation to them to stay alive, although it will always cause pain to anyone who cares for you.
He may even have felt a burden to them.

I now have someone dependant on me, and as my life has slightly improved, my depression has slightly
lifted, but will never go away. I wish at times I had the courage to commit suicide.

My message is, do not ever blame someone for taking their own life, unless you have had depression yourself.
Report ebulGery August 16, 2014 2:04 AM BST
I have known people who have committed suicide, and believe me, they have been in some mental pain.
In some cases sadly it seemed inevitable. Because there was no way to take away their mental pain,
they were suffering.

I am not talking about suicide attempts to gain attention here.
The real deal, when people go all the way, because it is the only way to stop the pain.
Report ebulGery August 16, 2014 2:11 AM BST
It is no hope which finally kills. As long as people can find some hope, even if unlikely
they will hang on. But no hope kills. Robin had Parkinson's, at this stage he may well have lost hope.
At this point suicide is very hard to stop.

Depression like mental illness generally is one long big deep lonely hole and if there is a ladder people just can't find it. Levity is generally our way of saying there but for good fortune go I. He leaves us many happy memories even if his own road was rocky. Hopefully his family are in some small way comforted by the fact that his kindness and humanity seemed to shine through and that he expresed it in a way which must have alleviated suffering for others even if that was only fleeting.

"Black Dog On My Shoulder"

There's a black dog on my shoulder again
Licking my neck and saying she's my friend
Solitude the one thing that I really miss
Guess my life is a compromise

There's a black dog on my shoulder again
I'm playing with it but it's gone to my head
Like Carlito's way there are no exit signs

Freeze me there until I am numb
My mouth is so dry
My eyes are shut tight
There's a black dog a coming tonight
Black dog's a coming tonight

My dilemma but not my choice
Winston Churchill can you hear my voice
Melodrama there in my kitchen sink
Double vision the way it is

Am I coming home to you again
Or am I stupid just by design
Does it matter if you really ever know

This black dog is out of control
My mouth is so dry
My eyes are shut tight
There's a black dog a coming tonight
Black dog's a coming tonight

Am I coming home to you again

Also the only comedian to die on a laugh, his death at the London Palladium was

Some people condemn Cooper, because the women in his lives took one or two bruises,
but I think that is rewriting history

Cooper was a big man and not easy to handle physically, particularly if he did not want to do something.
