anyone got any advice as regards most economical booking options ,also general knowledge on fly drive experiences.

Don't know about current prices, but about 15 years ago got a flight to NY spent 2-3 days there then got a flight to Miami where we picked up a car. Travelled down the Keys and up west coast of Florida as far as Tampa where we saw the Bucs. Then did Disney etc, then Cape Canaveral. About 2 weeks in total and dropped car off at Orlando. Brilliant holiday.
Stayed here it's a great base for visiting all Florida,about 20 mins to Disney and 40mins from either coast.
Nice place as well it's got everyting. Drove to Key West and had a couple of days down, there it's a long drive but worth it.

Just go into a travel agent.
Thinly veiled "I'm winning on the horses and if it continues, I can take family to US next year on holiday of a lifetime".
Of course, if the winning streak ends it's another holiday in caravan in Skegness/Rhyl/Clacton ... delete as appropriate.
But good luck with the horses!
AND ... New York is a great place for 3-4 days, then try the Carolinas if you want beaches.
Florida is a sh!thole. Mosquitoes in Everglades and Southern Florida Gulf Coast, red tide (lots of stinking dead fish in Gulf on beaches and in sea off SE coast), fat loud Americans, endless queues at overpriced theme parks, rubbish food.
Used to live in US, and Boston, Chicago, New York are great, California (excl cities) great - as are lots of other places.
But Florida??? Don't go.

you sound like a good guy, so ... (presuming it's a summer holiday)
fly to New York,4 days in New York (like being on a movie set ... Central Park, 5th Avenue, lunch in Grand Central station, Empire State building, Times Sq & Broadway)
Then drive/ train (New England express - slowest express known to man) to Boston ... 2-3 days in Boston Park, museum, Red Sox game in Fenway Park, ocean front, walk the city.
Then one way car rental back to NY (if NY to Boston by train),
BUT call at Cape Cod for your beach holiday ... wonderful old fashioned towns and great beaches ... it's not called New England for nothing! Went with family and loved it.
