Is it any wonder that this is on the increase when 16% of pupils are getting three school meals?

I was in Brixton this morning, I've never seen so many big ar$es in all my days. The level of obesity in this country is a national disgrace and an embarrassment to us all. I've recently read somewhere that even some of our popular soap stars struggle to fit in a size 12 dress, words fail me really they do.

I was trying to get to the sandwich counter in Tesco yesterday. Needed some stuff for a works picnic.

I couldn't get near it for 3 big lardy lumps dithering about what to buy.

One turned round to apologise to me for keeping me waiting.

As she did so, she bumped into me.

It was like being hit by a bouncy castle! Shocked

When i was a kid there were maybe only 2 or 3 fat persons in the whole school, constant figures of ridicule with nicknames like bunter, blem and fat tracy

British girls (under 20) are the fattest in Europe. Why?

Just heard that the survey was conducted by FIFA.

They're fat because their Mothers are fat, plus they forget about the calories in booze.
Report i_agree_with_nick November 18, 2014 12:16 PM GMT
We know why they're fat but why are we worse than France, Germany etc etc
Report Thin and Crispy November 18, 2014 12:26 PM GMT
Becuase they eat more crap drink more booze and exercise less.  There is less peer pressure when all your friends and family are fat,it just becomes the norm.

This country's bullies are simply not up to the task. I'm still going to do my part and laugh at fat kids.
Report Wesdag November 18, 2014 1:03 PM GMT
We're great at making excuses rather than tackling the problem which is too much sugar and not enough exercise.

Mug families out there still don't know fizzy drinks packed full of sugar can make you fat.

Instead we trot out excuses such as "comfort eating" for years because your pet hamster died.

Any woman over size 16 is "curvy" or a "real woman".

Give me an imaginary woman size 8-12 any day.

I'm a bit sceptical -- round here you do not see many lardarses, though there are some, of course. I wonder if the official statistics are made worse because they are weighing kids against "normal" figures that are out of date (and probably for the wrong race half the time as well).

Yes, kids weigh more than they used to in the 50s and 60s but they are also (a) taller and (b) reach puberty earlier (and (c) are more likely to be Black).

Yeah Ram, all the white kids are like whippets round here.

Wait until Angel Gabriel sees this thread.

He says that people who look at children or make observations about them are voyeurs.
Or worse.

I can only conclude that he thinks that everybody views children in the same way that he does. Whatever that might be.

Junior school 1959-63
Kenny Edgett (aka Lumpy) in my class, and his brother Brian (aka Junior) in the year below us, were the only fat kids in the whole school of 350 kids. By the time they were in their mid 20s they were both 6'-6" tall and over 20 stones, but no fat in sight.

Senior school (1963-67)
Peter Edmondson, nicknamed 'Wobble' the only fat kid out of 400. He always ate too much, his older brother Ronald was taller, and skinny. Saw Peter a few years later, still fat.

I can only remember one chubber from school, a lad called Ian Potts. Strangely he was only ever called Pottsy, and seemed to escape a fat related nickname.
iirc he was rarely bullied, although he would occasionally be "baited" in the manner of a bear in the quadrangle.
In fact for an all boys school he got off quite lightly (:)). One particularly sadistic teacher did always call him the Michelin Man though, usually to raise a laugh from the class at the expense of poor old Pottsy.
Apparently his weight was a "glandular" problem.

We had a smelly bird named Shirley at senior school, but she never got a nickname for it.
A girl named Sandra who had a voice deeper than mine is now, her nickname was 'Foghorn'
Schulz was the surname of the Head Boy ('Head' meant something different in those days) despite being English, he was nicknamed 'Herman'.
Ronald Hunt, who wasn't the sharpest tool in the box, was nicknamed TUG, which apparently meant Terrible, Ugly, Gormless.
Alan Meeks, who excelled at art, had blond hair, blues eyes, long eyelashes and hated all sports. He got called everything except Alan.  Laugh

The US obesity epidemic (adults) by state, 1985 - 2010:
.

The old ‘eat less, exercise more’ argument.

Basically you are asking people to do the very thing that by becoming obese in the first place they’ve shown they just can’t do – eat less. And on top of that, do the one thing that’s guaranteed to increase their appetites – exercise more.

It's not that simple. Carbs drive insulin drives fat and insulin interferes with satiety signals from leptin causing the person to feel hungry. This is a message from the brain saying 'eat more', they really are starving even though they've eaten enough. If the diet placed a bigger emphasis on good quality fats, not trans or polyunsaturates, and not on carbohydrate they wouldn't be spiking their insulin all day long and leptin could do its job better.

If you are unlucky with your genes you'll likely not handle carbs that well eventually, even super fit athletes are not immune as Steve Redgrave found out when he trained himself to diabetes on carbs.

Stuffing your face with carbs is a form of Russian Roulette and if the thought of the insulin causing type 2 diabetes isn't enough, the possibility of it damaging your brain and giving you diabetes type 3 - or Alzheimer's as it is more commonly known, ought to make you think twice.
