Alfredo Stéfano di Stéfano Laulhé (Spanish pronunciation: [alˈfɾeðo ði (e)sˈtefano]; 4 July 1926 – 7 July 2014) was an Argentine-Spanish footballer and coach, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. He was most associated with Real Madrid and was instrumental in their domination of the European Champions' Cup during the 1950s, a period in which the club won the trophy in five consecutive seasons from 1956. Along with Francisco Gento, he was one of only two players to play a part in all five victories. Di Stéfano played international football mostly for Spain, but he also played for Argentina and Colombia.

Is that better?

Saw him live twice. Both games in Glasgow via Eintracht and Rangers although I can't remember much of him in the Rangers game where Real were second best but won 1-0.

Too young to have seen him live but clearly a really great player. RIP Alfredo

I saw the Eintracht match akabula. Probably the greatest game I've seen. Must have been terrific to be there.

Was jam packed with the official attendance 127,000 and the noise was deafening. Will never be bettered in my opinion as the best game ever.

RIP, Sir.

Greatest footballer ever?

Probably.
Report sofiakenny July 9, 2014 12:38 AM BST
puskas the only other contender.
Report GranpaChook. July 9, 2014 2:15 PM BST
Di Stefano and Puskas.  Possibly the greatest front line the game's ever seen.  The Real Madrid side of that era was something else.
Report kenny mann July 9, 2014 3:49 PM BST
and Gento was superb on the left wing. Think better than Giggs at his best.
Report akabula July 9, 2014 4:00 PM BST
One of the few things I remember from the Ibrox game was Gento giving Bobby Shearer a 10 yard start in a chase for the ball and being 10 yards in front of him after about 2 seconds Laugh
Report kenny mann July 9, 2014 4:07 PM BST
ha ha,did you ever see Jimmy Johnstone? He was unbelievable. I saw him jst once lve at Elland Road in ,70 when Celtic tore us apart, and that was the great Leeds side.
Report kenny mann July 9, 2014 4:07 PM BST
few spelling errors there.Blush
Report akabula July 9, 2014 4:18 PM BST
Loads of times Kenny. I first saw him in a reserve game at parkhead (Me and my mate who was a celtic supporter went to a lot of reserve games at both grounds)He was a fabulously talented player. A joy to watch unless your team were the opposition.
I remember one time at Ibrox John Greig tackled him and put him about 12 feet in the air. Wee Jinky, unlike todays players, just dusted himself down and got on with it. He could take a tackle and always strove to stay on his feet.
BTW not a bad singer either, check him out on utube.
Report kenny mann July 9, 2014 4:22 PM BST
Yes I've heard him singing, done a fair bit of research on him youtube. I couldn't get over how Leeds were ouplayed that night. It was right in the midle of their 10 year glory period and I never saw it happen before that, or again afterwards. Home as well!! Pity there's no real footage on youtube of that game. There is of the 2nd leg.
Report akabula July 9, 2014 4:26 PM BST
In those days the old firm players mingled and Jimmy was best buddies with Wee Willie Henderson another great winger. Not as gifted as Jinky but a more direct winger. Jinky's problem was that it was not only the opposition who couldn't get the ball off him but his team mates as well Laugh
He would dribble by three or four players then go back and beat them again. In a friendly in Madrid with Real he got a standing ovation from the crowd.

remember that 7-3 game and seeing di Stefano and Gento alongside Puskas on the old black n white tele, other players from that era were a Russian goalie called Lev Yashin who was supposed to be unbeatable.Me old Dad though said that John Charles was the greatest footballer he,d ever seen either at centre half or centre forward, you ever see him Kenny ?
Report kenny mann July 9, 2014 8:58 PM BST
No, not on the pitch RL, although I'm old a tad before my time.

Did see him regularly in Stakis Casino in Bradford just below the bus station after he'd been with his mates to the boxing nights at the Hilton next door.

One night George Best had been booked as guest speaker (about 1985) Afterwards all the boxing crowd spilled into the casino in their suits, dress shirts and dickie bows. I sidled up to the roulette table so I was stood next to the great John Charles. Did George turn up I asked. (this was when he was notorious for missing appointments) Without looking at me John said loudly, "DID HE BOLOKS" lol
Report akabula July 9, 2014 8:59 PM BST
Not quite Kenny. Jinky also lacked consistency.
Report kenny mann July 9, 2014 9:29 PM BST
ah, right. Fair enough mate. I only saw him a few time.
Report Roger The Butler July 10, 2014 9:24 AM BST
Not at all doubting that he was one of the greats, but have a feeling they said on ITV last night that he never played at a world cup. How can that be for such a good player. Above someone has put he played for Argentina, Spain and Colombia (bit dubious - three international teams?) so not like Giggs or Bale never playing a world cup as they are stuck with duff national teams. Why no world cup?
Report kenny mann July 10, 2014 10:35 AM BST
When he played for Argentina they didn't enter due to some conflict, and when he swapped to Spain, they didn't qualify.
Report akabula July 10, 2014 7:22 PM BST
Roger - Colombia weren't recognised by FIFA and he then took out Spanish citizenship which allowed him to play for Spain.
Report stewarty b July 11, 2014 4:43 PM BST
Eintracht Frankfurt played Rangers in the semi-final of that year's European Cup and although Rangers had a very good team they were slaughtered both home and away, each time Frankfurt scored six against them. I think It was 6-1 and 3-6. Rangers were amazed and thought they were invincible.

Then they came up against Puskas and di Stéfano in the final....
Report akabula July 11, 2014 6:22 PM BST

Only inasmuch as Celtic were formerly known as Celtic, Hearts were formerly known as Hearts, Hibs were formerly known as Hibs and Aberdeen were always known as chyte.
