Women's tennis should be seen for what it is...a slowed-down, easier version of the main event. It should rewarded a such, with prize moody etc about half of the main competition.
The main competition should be operated like The Derby. Open to players of both sexes with the prize and accolades going to the winner. If any of the women wanted equal recognition for her tennis prowess the way would be clear for her to prove it.
The truth is that they ain't anywhere near good enough. Don't get me wrong, you can have a good women's match, just as you can have a good finish in a low-class race. But move them up in difficulty and......Nothing!

Stopped watching woman's tennis when they thought that screaming after every point made them better players.

I always put the bbc on and if it's Wimin playing it goes straight off

Bille Jean King was the undisputed best female player in the world.

Bobby Riggs was an accomplished male player.

Google the match, easy to find.

I question the degree of his accomplishment. What you are saying is that a woman once beat a man at tennis.
What I am saying is that I doubt if any women would rank in the top 40 seeded players.
They certainly would NOT win an international tournament. They are too weak, too slow, too fat  and too damned loud with it!

I was channel flicking a few nights ago though and came across the second half of what was a very good documentary about the Billie Jean King/Bobby Riggs match.

It was especially interesting to hear just what a brilliant self-promoter Riggs was - and a prolific gambler.

Well worth watching for anyone not even interested in tennis.

Intriguing fact: Men are faster and stronger than women. It's about genes. Women cannot compensate for this by training more or harder.

This matters in pretty much all sports, including tennis. In football women are evenly matched with 15 year old boys. When Usain Bolt was 15-16 years old he was already as fast as any woman in the world etc etc.

No woman would get into top 1000 if they competed against men (at least I don't think so, I'm not interested in tennis and never watch it).

women paid far more than men.

Not much to add to pumpy's OP. Apart from the prize money part. If they get the same prize money, they should play best of five sets as the men do to qualify for it. Bores the sh!t out of me, or it would do if I ever watched it.

Athletics? The Men's 100 metres and THAT'S IT! Everything else is slow and inferior.

Boxing? Men's Heavyweight AND THAT'S IT. Everything else is weaker and inferior.

Skiing? Men's Downhill and THAT'S IT

Nobody has ever had to 'reduce sport down'. Certain events or aspects of sports have always garnered more interest, have been more prestigious and in return have generated more money. That is how it is I am afraid.

Nobody is saying THAT SHOULD BE IT or that they should be banned from playing as it's less popular, only that employment law type equality should not happen.

This has not been true for many years.
The best two boxers won't fight each other because they are siblings.
Mayweather & Paquino have been the superstars of the last decade.

Women's tennis is unwatchable due to the constant irritation of noise.

The mens game is unwatchable due to the amount of double faults , constant bouncing of the ball  , pretend injuries to break  the other players rhythm.

And don't get me going on the need for a sit down after every 2 games .....they even sit down after one game ffs , just change ends.

I wouldn't have thought the prize money in Women's tennis would have bothered many in here.

It's not as if anyone is ever going to win even a Challenger \tournament.

Roger, I suggested that, if women want to enter and compete in the main event, it should be open to them.
If they only want to compete in supporting events, then they should be paid accordingly. If they want to win big prizes they need to win big events.

Roger with respect your post @ 20.22 is seriously deluded and a huge misjudgment of sports fans especially someone like me. I couldn't give a monkeys about the mens 100 metres, I'd rather watch the hockey final.

In boxing give me the lightweights or middleweights over the heavyweight division any day of the week.

So in your mindest then The Epsom Derby or say The Arc would be only race worth watching then? I'd rather watch The Tingle Creek at Sandown or The King George at Kempton personally. I'd certainly go to those meetings but I don't think I'd ever bother to go to Epsom again.

The fact is, women's tennis is a very dull event regardless of the prize money debate. I had to check who won today and I can honestly say I'd never heard of either of them. Anyway, I thought Steffi Graf was still playing mesen so that shows how much women's tennis means to me. Absolutely nothing.

That is my whole point Roger I'm not fighting for a principle its the women's tennis players that fought  for a principle that in my book did & does  not exist.

The performance by Kvitova in todays final was one of the greatest i have seen
in any sport, especially under the pressure of a grand slam final, this includes all sports
and either men or women. It was sensational.

But it wasn't a difficult task. She was playing another inferior player.
Do they have special 'stand a bit closer' courts for them...or do they have to re-do all the lines?

The point I was making is that they are ALL inferior players. They serve slowly. They move slowly. They scream and yell with every shot they play. It's a second-rate game.

there's clear evidence that the sporting achievement gap is narrowing, certainly in athletics. Somewhere between the industrial revolution and women competing professionally, there's a mix of the fact they're allowed the time to professionally train for events, and also that women's bodies are changing because they're not the stay at home effort's they used to be.

in any event, their fun bags and baby makers will ultimately mean they cannot compete at the same level as men.

I wonder if the women would receive the same prize money if Wimbledon was shown on ITV or Sky? I doubt it. Far more people watch the men's compared to the women's. (nap) (football being the best example)

Yes you can, when power/speed/physical abilites help make the sport what it is. Who would you rather watch - Djokovic and Federer as they are or weaker, slower versions of them?

I really enjoyed the final today pumps even though I didn't have a bet and was watching the racing as well at the same time so missed some of it. Thoroughly good entertainment and great value.

Yes a great game slipps, a great effort by Federer who is  not as good as he once was but was playing as though he knew this was his last chance of a grand slam win, just beaten by a slightly superior opponent on the day.

Bouchard the much better looking of the two, so she deserved to win

I completely agree there is no point, there is no comparison & only deserve the same money if they play the same length of tennis games.
