A few years ago, my old man had gout all over his body that had spread from his big toe.

He was hospitalised for weeks in a specialist ward. Wouldn't clear up. If he'd been given a gun, he would have happily put a bullet in his head without a second thought.

I'm dreading ever getting it, after seeing what he went through.

Gall stones massive pain in chest apparently its worth than giving birth which I can vouch for took me 12 hours before they would give me any morphine on the ward. When I had them removed they ballsed up the operation and ended up having leaking bile duct in other words peritonitis, the pain was worse than the pain I went in with bile is caustic and was leaking so had to have a self induced morphine phs machine.Never been in so much pain constantly for 7/8 days
and the morphine was such low dosage was still in constant agony!!Shocked

Report BonnieDday June 20, 2014 10:53 PM BST
Petrus Romanus had my eyes watering with his story of the clap clinic!!

I have to go with the gout brigade though. Have considerable experience of it as a result of chronic kidney failure, leading eventually to a successful kidney transplant and no more gout. Classically in the big toe which is nothing short of agonising, but I agree with the poster who said it's worse in the knee. Many years ago, I was driving home and suddenly got a crippling attack in the left knee. It was so painful that I couldn't depress the clutch pedal. So I improvised and did the accelerator, brake and clutch with my right foot, which required footwork that Len Goodman the ballroom dancing judge would have been proud of. Got home safely swathed in sweat and had to hop right footed from the car into the house. Knee blew up like a balloon and was so swollen with gouty fluid that the doc in the hospital had to drain it off by driving this huge needle into my knee joint, extracting this green liquid, and then injected the joint with steroids. Not my most comfortable hour!!

If you have an attack of gout you should not take allopurinol, it could make it worse. Naproxen is what you need.
I've had it in my ankle and it's bitterly painful but I worked with someone who used to get it solely in his elbows. A big lump of a bloke literally reduced to a blubbering wreck.

Kenny mann, my mate is a G.P. and he told me that. For me when I get my two attacks a year Naproxen sorts it out extremely rapidly.

I'm not overly impressed with the not drinking beer bit either. I walk at least 35/40 miles a week am and basically very healthy but gout does flare up every now and then.

I've had several tooth abcesses, I've had piles, and I've had herniated disc pain (leg and back) - absolute agony for several months. Tried everything for the pain and even morphine didn't get near it.

But none of that compared to gastroentiritis which burst a blood vessel in my intestine and the blood poured into my bladder - that gave me so much stomach pain, I actually couldn't breathe. I was sh1tting blood for 3 days afterwards.Scared
