Actually many people have a better average in Test cricket than at county level, so we'll give him a chance. Joe Root is guiding him along nicely.

He's got a longer beard than W G Grace.

What other spin bowler would you pick?
Monty can't back for toffee |

Vaughan and Tres had pretty poor FC averages before being picked for England. The selectors saw something they liked and were proved right.

early days for him yet. a joke that he's supposedly our front line spinner though. probably get away with it against awful travellers like sri lanka. seems they ain't gonna pick monty again but they've gotta decide who our next best spinner is and play him
india and jaya and sanga for that matter will no doubt treat ali's bowling with the contempt it deserves |

John Emburey got me out once - give him a chance.

I reckon he's a stop gap to "do a job" whilst the selectors allow the potential spin candidates to prove themselves and stick their proverbial hand up and shout pick me. I very much doubt that Ali (or Root for that matter) will be number one spinner in next year's ashes contest.

To many chiefs not enough indians.

i may have been just slightly guilty of jumping in too early
an incredible improvement from those early matches |

Just watched the highhlights and i have worked out the reason for his success. He sticks both arms out like doing a waist up star jump as he goes into the delivery stride and it puts the batsmen off.

His first class batting average is not bad at an average of 38, but his 100 plus wickets have cost him 40 each! Bizarrely this is pretty much now his record in test cricket, batting average 35 and 100 test wicket at 40 |
