When my best mate was living in Llangollen about 25 odd years ago he told me Rik came into one of his local pubs (The Sun Trevor) one night and was an outstanding bloke. Very funny, very amenable - and got very drunk with all the locals.

saw him recently in An American Werewolf in London. Always thought it odd he popped up in that.
Saw him live years ago as Kevin Turvey where half the time he was ad libing - cried with laughter.

Really enjoyed his recent sitcom on Channel 4 where he played Greg Davies' dad - Man Down. Him and Greg Davies are brilliant in it, really funny and worth catching if you get the chance.

This house will become a shrine, and punks and skins and rastas will all gather round
and hold their hands in sorrow for their fallen leader.
And all the grown-ups will say,

"But why are the kids crying?" And the kids will say, "Haven't you heard? Rick is dead! The People's Poet is dead!"

I also remember vaguely an excellent drama, I think written and directed by him.

Co-starring a stunning Helen Bonham Carter in one of her best performances.

Sure it was set on the Yorkshire coast, but that's all I remember

Dancing Queen is the drama you're thinking of Poppy.  Was one of 3 (I think) programmes under the banner "Rik Mayall Presents". I've got Dancing Queen indoors - appropriate time to watch it again I feel...

Bottom is one of the funniest things I've ever seen on television. Can't remember a single episode that wasn't hilariously bonkers. One of the few comedies that actually made you laugh out loud.

Very very sad news.

Agreed, Geesyerdosh.
I remember one episode of Bottom in particular where Rik was going on a date (I think) and furiously spraying himself with deodorant - and it was one of the funniest things I've ever seen on a comedy show.

didn't any of you ever see the Bad News spoof when they played at The Donnington Monsters of Rock? I wonder if his quad bike accident did more damage than was ever let on, he was close to death apparently at one time.

One of the funniest things I ever saw Rick do, was when he was on stage performing the Elvis song "I'm Evil". (with different words)

Here's the Elvis version

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQ_vRIbkyJg

and here's Rick's masterpiece. You really need to listen to the words, and it helps if you know the tune of the original song.

I've been looking for it on and off for years, and appropriately, today I've found it.

great to see Kevin Turvey after all these years. My little brother still has to say 'sausages, potatoes, gravy' in that Turveyesque Redditch accent Grin

Fantastic clip of 'Richie's Date' Bergkamp93!

Unfortunately, that isn't the one with the deodorant (I did say I couldn't remember what it was about exactly) - but brilliant all the same!
