A wonderful break from gambling in Vegas is the Secret Garden and Dolphin habitat at the Mirage. It costs somewhere in the region of $20 and although I am not completely in favour of keeping these animals in captivity, it is a great complex that is very well run and makes for a nice afternoon away from the tables.
That said, I wondered if anyone had any opinions on what they felt was the best zoo to visit in the UK?
Only been to a few. Regents Park in London, Howletts in Kent, and Colchester in Essex.
I'd vote for Colchester. Plenty of room, and not much traffic.
No idea if other zoos do it, but they used to hold daily raffles and the winning ticket holder got to take the meat into the lions den at mealtime.
I told my eldest granddaughter they had 60 seconds to get in and out, that's when the gates open automatically for the lions to come back in, and they become dinner.
She started to look really worried at 50 seconds and I got told off by Mrs CMAT for scaring her.

not been to that many myself, Twycross is nice if you like monkeys and they do a lot of conservation work with them. Been to West Midlands Safari Park, Longleat and Drayton Manor when a kid but can't remember much except roasting in a coach at the Safari Park.

Great setting plus you have various animals roaming around free so you'll be walking around and a kangaroo will bounce up to you.
They also walk 5 or 6 of the elephants around the grounds every day. Great to be standing right by them as they go past.

I prefer safari parks. Longleat is awesome. London Zoo's reptile house great though. I agree that Colchester Zoo is very good. Paignton pretty good as well.

Ringy 26 May 14 13:50 Grateful for the replies. I'm near Newmarket so Colchester Zoo isn't a million miles away. Will go in June before the school holiday starts.
Traffic you're better off driving along the A14 and onto the A12, and approaching Colchester from the east. It's longer, the A134 is the shortest route, but it's a diabolical road. Every time you thinl you have a chance to drive over 50 (safely) you'll either come to a village with a 30 or 40 limit, a roundabout, speed camera, or all 3.
