Not as dramatic maybe, but still top quality. Very atmospheric, capturing the essence of the Cohen Bros. style very well imo.

Not as good as the film but it is still very good, and the one thing they have done they have used that deliberate oddity the Coen Bros have in their films - with the characters and the dialogue and the mood of it.  And as Facts said ^ it does capture the essence of the Coen Bros. style.

fantasic! but what a terrible death in that frozen lake, poor guy had given up all hope,all he could muster in a very lame fashion was "please dont" b4 they dropped him in head first.very much looking forward to those two bastards being sorted out

Facts

I normally like the Coen brothers` stuff, and was looking forward to this. Especially as it has Billy Bob Thornton, the casting of whom usually guarantees a good film.
Watching a series such as Fargo demands a substantial investment, time wise. Do I really want to commit myself to watching something for 5? 6? 8? years?? Well, yes, if it`s good enough, so I watched the first episode.
From the start, Freeman`s accent grated, and I just found the plot to be implausible and contrived. Can`t really blame the Coens for taking the tv dollar but, all round, very disappointing. I may be about to miss out on the best tv series ever but, never mind, I`ll take my chances.

what happened last night in closing scene with the king of the supermarkets ? was half cut when watching.

he was taking a shower when suddenly the water turned blood red,not sure if was blood or dyed water but it was down to billy bob,great series.

Just watched the first three on 4od.  Never normally watch tv dramas, least of all US ones, but loved the film so thought I would give it a whirl.  Brilliant so far.  Freeman, thornton and the woman copper are all superb.  The yanks may disagree, but to this untrained ear Freemans accent is spot on, dont notice it at all.  Is so like the guy in the film it is unreal, same goes for the ladycop.  Intrigued to see how the storyline pans out, looking forward to tomorrows episode.

Just looking at the filmography of the womancop actress... Alison Tollman.  There isnt much.

Seems she didnt get much work but was always going to acting schools and stuff.  She isnt, ahem, overly photogenic either.  Must have been very easy for her to give up, seems like this is a proper big break for her and she is doing a superb job.  Good luck to her, hope she gets a few more good gigs on the back of it.

I like to at least believe things are plausible in films, but like most Coen Brother's films it descends into farce.

Lester aint exactly gonna get beaten up in the cells.  He will have a chance to prove that he didnt murder Hess now.

I think freeman is doing a great job, but why did he get the gig, surely there is a good american actor who could have done it.

Billy Bob just excellent as always, Freeman doing a good job too it has to be said

What can they do to him in the cells?  They cant torture or beat him up or the guards will stop it and they will end up in more trouble.  This gives him a chance to put his side of the story in, a chance he wasnt going to get, he was a dead man walking, just waiting for them to finish him off, before.

Freeman gets the gig and they can sell the series more easily to UK and other countries who know him.

About the policewoman actress….with her limited experience what a massive break for her….imagine her hearing the news that she was due to star with Thornton and Freeman!

I lost interest in it last night.  Can't actually remember the plot being forwarded much.  A week is a long time in between programmes to remember.

Caught up with the latest episode last night.  Very enjoyable.

I thought that in the scene when the new police chief was 'interrogating' Nygard was absolutely brilliant.  He was crying in the end!

The actor should get an Oscar nomination for that scene alone.

Just off to google the actor….

The can was marked "Pig's Blood", I think. Not sure how you stop the stuff from congealing into black pudding in the heat of the shower - add an anticoagulant, I suppose. But it shouldn't be too hard to obtain from a butcher. Just say you want to make black pudding, or Blutwurst, or whatever they call it in the States.

The important thing is that it has the taste, smell and texture of blood, which died water would not.

Generally very enjoyable but must say I had a big problem with Billy Bob's character. Didn't know whether to play it as a Chigurh sociopath or as a wisecracker with the high iq and A-Team ish resourcefulness.

Writing and performing in general though top quality.

Lester was trying to get 'ballsy' with Malvo with his new found confidence, but was soon put to right by the maniac that is Malvo, who's not one to let things go lightly. That's about it I guess?

still watching this - penultimate ep was the best so far

just brilliant! Malvo is the best TV character since ever and BBT brilliant as always.

The scene where he just had to tell the guy and his kids about the murders in his house was just malevolent.

There may well be American actors that can do the journey from henpecked husband to manipulative sociopath, but not as well as he's doing.

Why the hell did he go and mix it with Malvo again though? Punching well above his weight there (cue bizarre plot twist to prove me wrong though!)

I was thinking that yesterday tiptheodds.  Cannot think of a better tv drama character than malvo.  Thornton is just a legend.

Well... now you have had the chance to catch up last night, what did you think to the ending ?

not sure why this hasnt got any replies,thought the acting was superb,storyline fantasic with the two "baddies" getting it so to speak, but i would like to ask the coen brothers(no chance of course)their thinking on why malvo let the deaf guy go and why he was never sighted again and also what was the point of the son of lester"s brother seeing lester after he"d broken in and left evidence ie gun and the boy never spoke up as his father went wrongful to prison for murder,im not knocking it as the scripwriter are so good but whats their thinking behind it? guess i"ll never know!

Trying to be 'artsy' and lead viewers up the garden path when it's completely unnecessary, since the story stands up as it is.

I also don't for one minute it was based on a true story. Even in a land where murders are like cheeseburgers, I'm pretty sure I'd have heard about 3 guests slaughtered in a lift in Las Vegas and a mass-murder of a warehouse full of villains in Fargo.

I thought the framed brother in law would have made an appearance or did I miss it?

he didnt kim,also the "true story" thing was a wind up roger. you might be right about the garden path but thats one of the reasons it was so good,were we being lead?one what did "the glove" story mean?and what was the point of it?

no doubt there will be endless threads on imdb regarding the plot etc.

i found the ending a little disappointing, i loved the surgery on the broken leg, but it was little more than an assassination in the end…..

and lester looked like he was in a Milk Tray ad - and also a little unimaginative….maybe man drown in hole in ice is a very popular way to go...

my main gripe is that my hopes were raised when i saw a box set available described as Season One.  With no Malvo or Lester, could there be another series?

and what was the importance of the wolf ? the critic in the mail thinks theyve left it open for a other season,hope so as sunday nights wont be the same

at the start of the programme he (and wife) was being sold life insurance by lester…..and he didn't take it...

o the couple who couldnt get out quick enough in the 1st?what a good memory jack,we dont know for sure if malvo killed him although he was dragging someone who was minus a shoe

Billy Bob Thornton suitably sinister as Dr Lorvis in The Big bang Theory on E4 last night.

On more4 now, just realised the dumb copper is the same actor, Bob Odenkirk, as Saul Goodman the lawyer in breaking bad.

coen brothers had no input into the series whatsoever but still was the best thing on tv all year

Yes there will be a second series - different characters and location from the first so will be interesting to see how it goes.

I've been to Fargo ...

had to do a bit of work in Jamestown, North Dakota.  Meant flying into Fargo from the Twin Cities and then a hire car and 100 mile drive due west on a dead straight road.

Anyway, all I remember about Fargo Airport is that in the entrance hall they had an array of snowmobiles on display.  But it was July and 100 degrees F outside!!  Apparently it get to -100 degrees F in January (or something like that, I didn't stay to find out).
