Got a letter this morning saying i was driving at 60mph on a 50mph road Cry  As i was doing less than 64mph i have the option to go on a speed awareness course or pay the £100 + 3 points. Obviously i'm going to to apply for the course but i seem to recall you still have to pay £85, no mention of that on the letter from plod.

Anyone been on a speed awareness course? Any info please?

I went on one in Guildford two or three years ago......found it quite useful
Report Ibrahima Sonko • March 29, 2014 11:50 AM GMT
been a few freds about this on here before.

I went on one a few years ago, thought it was going to be complete waste of time but in the end i found it useful.

The course is good and you'll come out of it a better driver which could save lives.
Report Joel • March 29, 2014 12:27 PM GMT
Do they tell you how to make it?
Report seaview • March 29, 2014 4:39 PM GMT
Take the points + £60  why £100 ?

Speeding,if you can call it that does not make you a  bad driver.  Drivers doing less than the limit  can be more dangerous..and insurers dont like the fact that you needed retraining.

anything to make money, might as well take the points then.

Been on three which tells you how useful they were.

One was good. The other two were run by guys who SO badly wanted to be  standup comedians. They had an audience who could not escape for four hours and boy were they going to milk it!

Think 'David Brent without the irony'.

I wish I'd chosen to take it when I was offered, instead I took the 3 points. Not realising that 3 points makes your insurance more expensive(any excuse).

They've gone up mate Sad

I'm not too bothered about the insurance side of things as its a company car.
Report STUDYFORM • March 29, 2014 10:40 PM GMT
If it's a company car, be careful how many points you get. You could lose it!
Report dewey • March 29, 2014 11:09 PM GMT
Yes - you just have to listen to somebody talking about most things that you already know.  There was one or two points that I didn't but weren't too relevant.
Report dewey • March 29, 2014 11:15 PM GMT
Oh - forgot...free cup of coffee and you get to listen to people who have driven for forty or fifty odd years with a clean driving licence ......'til now. Bearable in the circustances.

A recap of speed limits with different types of vehicle on different roads was an eye opener to many. Shocked

Confirmation that the speed limit on single track country lanes is 50mph was met with some bewilderment.

No information was provided on how often were motorcyclists caught for speeding. Angry

Third gear for 30mph zones was a useful tip.
Report bix • March 30, 2014 12:19 PM BST
If you only take one thing from the course it is 3rd gear when you see the 30 sign.
Report Ivor • March 30, 2014 1:06 PM BST
does that include 5ltr, 8gear automatics?

Insurers only have to be told if they specifically ask about attendance at a speed awareness course. Proposers / policyholders are neither expected nor required to second guess what an insurer wishes to know about the risk presented. The insurer must ask. This is well evidenced by decisions of the Financial Ombudsman's Office. If the insurer asks about a conviction, then there is nothing to disclose as a speed awareness course is neither a prosection nor a conviction.

Having attended one quite recently, I would say without hesitation that I emerged better informed and wiser. Anyone pompous enough to think they have absolutely nothing to learn from such a course is an idiot and, probably, beyond help.

Hardly something to boast about. Why not tell them then?

I'm confused here.
People who come off a Speed Awareness Course are better drivers than people who have never been nicked for speeding?
Report Jack Hacksaw • March 31, 2014 10:32 AM BST
Don't be confused, just re-read what you italicised.

…better informed….

James, my dozy son,got a ticket the day before his birthday, and chose to go on a course.

He posted on FB "I am now aware about speed"!

Just days before his next birthday he got another ticket!

Jack Hacksaw. Precisely :-) . Thank you.

Call me a Taxi .... Jack Hacksaw has hopefully put you straight on that point. Sounds like you may need an eye test .... could make you a "better" driver. On your other point, not sure what you are getting at. No requirement to tell the insurer about a speed awareness course, if they don't ask specifically. What could result though, if you do disclose it when not asked to do so, is an unscrupulous insurer using the information to increase the premium. It's not rocket science. You disclose what you are required to disclose. You do not disclose what you are not required to disclose. What is it about insurance that gets everyone so confused and tetchy? For my sins, I spent (wasted) 26 years of my working life slaving for a major insurer in that particular area. I learnt a lot, but believe me, it doesn't get any more dull than that.

speeding!!!  It's all these idiots driving around town at 30 mph when I want to get past!!! GGGrrrrr!!!!! They are so much more dangerous then me.
Report lstniop • March 31, 2014 5:05 PM BST
I agree Moisok

They need a speed awareness course.when they do in a 60 limit do 50.  40 do 32.  30 do 26.  Plus Tractor Boy like to come out when the sun shines.

Wish they would get in the loser lane and stay there.
Report moisok • March 31, 2014 5:37 PM BST
For me the motorway is the worst. All those big heads in fkn great suv/range rovers doing 90 in the third lane.  I have to come right up behind them and flash my lights to get them out of the way.
And don't get me started on lorries!!!!!
Report Gibberish • March 31, 2014 5:38 PM BST
I was nailed with a 'spot-check' about 15 years ago for drink driving being a paltry 1mg over the limit after yet another reduction in the law (I had 2.5 pints) and I didn't have a choice but to go on a driving course that was attended by car-thieving scum - there was one other geezer there like me but we were outnumbered by utter vermin - it was absolutely useless and an insult!
Report Aunty Post • April 2, 2014 6:36 PM BST
They should make it more hands on, and thought provoking!

Have an old banger for everyone. Get them to pick a number from one, to how many are on the course.

Each one gets to sit in a car, which is then propelled into a substantial brick wall.

Lowest number is propelled at 25 mph then rising in 5 mph increments for every higher number.

Then when they get a result (fatal) the rest have to go and clean up the mess!

Absolute waste of time. I did one to keep my license clean.

Lost a days pay. Was told we would 'all learn something.'

They were right, I learnt the tutors are police officers on a nice cushy number off the beat, delivering a selection of bad videos dispersed with even worse jokes.

And then when my insurance was up for renewal the cost went up exactly the same as getting 3 points.

Just got another speeding ticket today, 6 months after the course. All I know is that we should keep our eyes glued to the speedometer coz cameras and cops in laybys all over the shop. Would explain why I never see a bobby on the beat anymore. Generating revenue is Britains answer to policing.

Let the lads from Hackney and Croxteth go gun totting and leave them too it. Much warmer in the paddy wagon drinking coffee and eating sandwiches.
