Not sure what your budget is, but Hotel du Vin is lovely. It is a boutique hotel just off the sea front but they do have family rooms, some with a sea view. If you go to Tripadvisor, there are some reviews from families who stayed there (click on families reviews) with the names of their rooms. Brighton is an amazing city these days - very buzzy and a great mixture of the posh, shabby and raffish.

paulypaul - the ones on the seafront are as follows...there are others but I do not know them.

Thistle - ugly, aging a bit now, but ok and a great location (front door to the sea front and back door to the lanes

The Old Ship - used to be dire, but is under new ownership, money being spent and recent reviews are really good - again great location.

The Grand, the grand old lady of Brighton. Again a bit tired and trading on its appearance but the rates are really good - not sure what retail is these days but corporate rates way undercut Hotel du Vin which suggests room (geddit?)for manouevre.

Hilton Metropole - Its on the seafront!

When are you going?

Where do you live eyeball?.  I really like Hastings, but Brighton is not boring.

Old one this - Name a city with league football, county cricket , a race track, a dog track?, and (to rule out Nottingham), a pier

Good post Eyeball. As I said, I really like Hastings.  Mind, Rye is wonderful. We are close enough to go for the day and go there a couple of times a year. It's the favourite place in Sussex for one of my best friends; so we've booked a house on Mermaid Street for his 65th in May. Restaurant recommendations welcome (money no objectWink) - that little Landgate Bistro was nice last time we went, Is it still?

Morning - I didn't put the Royal Albion on my list of seafront hotels because the Tripadvisor reviews are pretty awful. 585 "terribles" out of 1500 reviews. Not been in there though since my working days (8+ years ago).

Kemptown's lovely, Mange.  Friend of mine lives there. Mind he had gay burglars shortly after moving in.....    they redecorated the lounge and left a pizza in the oven.

Thanks all, really useful info and am on it...my kids are 12 (girl) 10 (boy) they love the seaside but not in a bucket and spade way now days etc. They like the rides on the pier (Arhh!)type thing. Love fish n chips on the beach and chilling for lunch. Wife and I will take them out for dinner somewhere. It all adds up but things have been a bit carp at home and it's a family bonding thing where there could be something for all hopefully. We are not rich but can afford something along these lines luckily for us and it's all about spending time together. I have Brighton in mind but will look at other coastal destinations too.
Many thanks again. Always a good tip on here when you need it.

if you want the pier, the albion is literally directly opposite, plus loads of fish & chips, candyfloss, doughnuts etc. in close proximity  Happy

paulypaul - The pier is seriously good, and your kids are a great age for the majority of the rides. My 6yo granddaughter is very brave, as is her grandadScared, but some are way beyond us so perfect for your lot.

Not sure when you are going, but the 1.5m Volks railway along the beach to the Marina is something unusual, and the 6 mile/18minute open-top bus journey from the pier to the local beauty spot Devils **** is not to be missed - The **** is the longest widest deepest dry chalk valley in England and the view over the Weald of Sussex was described by no less than John Constable as the "grandest view in England".

Hope you are able to come to Sussex

Thanks Misterbadger. Excellent news and glad its still good.  Had some wonderful meals there in the past, but sometimes these places go off via trading on reputation. Grateful to you.

Mange my Aunt was the food and beverage manager for Fortnum & Mason and she used to do those checks as well as an armpit inspection. She made the staff raise their arms and she sniffed their pits. If they were a bit smelly they were sent home.
