Lot of people admired Hitler too but despised his agenda. Your hero Thatcher publicly welcomed Pinochet, a murdering scumbag, to these shores and entertained him at no.10
Report themightymac April 27, 2015 6:22 PM BST
Thatcher`s great friendship with Pinochet is well documented but post one piece of evidence that Salmond is a big fan of the Korean nutter?

BTW I take you accept he was a big fan of Putin?
Report themightymac April 27, 2015 6:27 PM BST
I don`t know if he is or not a fan of Putin, which I doubt very much, so post some evidence on that too? But there is plenty of documented proof that Churchill was a big big fan of Stalin.

It's called protocol mac. The queen acts at the bequest of the government.
BTW Andrew Norton isn't really a historian but what's your point?
The whole of Europe lauded Hitler, including the Vatican, until he invaded Poland. (He saw Britain as the real enemy and Poland was but a mere starter in his quest for total power)

Salmond may have stated he admired Putin in some way but he never sat down to dinner with him.

Hitler never ever saw Britain as the real enemy, he always hoped to join an alliance with us and crush Bolshevism in the East.

mightymac; you describe pinochet as a 'scumbag'. he was certainly unpleasant, but he did allow free elections, which he lost, and walked away.

would you describe castro as 'an even more evil scumbag than pinochet'? he is, and has never allowed elections. if so, you are unusual, because most, if not all phoney liberals hate one but laud the other.

pinochet did not exercise a total media blackout, proscribe newspapers and tv stations, jam the bbc, nor did he deny passports to his people, or shoot people trying to escape. castros cuba has done all of these horrible things for over 50 years, but the left does not care.

can you can tell me why liberals love leftist dictatorships, but hate others?

i is a bit fick, and need some guidance.
Report themightymac April 27, 2015 11:08 PM BST
You would need to ask the Liberals that question, but probably because Leftist dictatorships are driven to help the poor and Rightist ones to trample on them. Personally, I`m not in favour of any dictatorships whether from the left or the right.
Report themightymac April 27, 2015 11:16 PM BST
Correct me if I`m wrong but did Pinochet not get to power by initiating a coup d`etat backed by the USA to overthrow the elected Socialist government of Allende? So why do you prefer him to Castro?
Report themightymac April 27, 2015 11:23 PM BST

Wiki :
Pinochet's regime was responsible for various human rights abuses during its reign including murder and torture of political opponents. According to a government commission report that included testimony from more than 30,000 people, Pinochet's government killed at least 3,197 people and tortured about 29,000. Two-thirds of the cases listed in the report happened in 1973.[101]
Report grappler April 28, 2015 12:03 AM BST
you are being disingenuuous. i never said i preferred him. i merely pointed out the dishonesty of people who hated him but supported someone much worse. would you have stated what an evil brute castro is? i doubt it. progressive socialists support castro but loath pinochet. i made it clear pinochet was orrible, but his detractors were/are big fans of someone much worse, who is still at it, with glaring examples of murder and censorship that were not practised by evil pinochet, but are by lovely fidel. is that not a glaring example of dishonesty?

leftists driven to help the poor? how? aside from killing everyone who wanted to eat? every leftist dictatorship of the age, the ussr, china, cambodia, all of eastern europe, north korea, and many others has done nothing but kill poor peasants in very large numbers.

the death toll of socialist countries supposedly acting in the interests of the people is staggering. at least 50 mill in china, 20 mill ussr, a miserly few mill in the others, and all without war. the nazis needed conflict. these ideological murderers didnt. they slaughtered millions of peasants because they did not like their 'bourgeois' attitudes, i.e. wanting to retain ownership of a few plants, owning a cow, or a pig.

they did this in peacetime. the faceless millions sent to the gulag for 'crimes' like 'anti-soviet attitudes' and being 'right-deviationists' will never be  accounted for. no truth and reconciliation for them. putin is still at it, as is the chinese communist party, which executes more people than any other country. it is depressing that this organisation that has bumped off tens of millions of its own is still at it, without almost no condemnation from anyone.
Report grappler April 28, 2015 12:38 AM BST
well researched leppo;

indeed he did bump off 3000 people he didnt like. i seem to be labouring the point, but it is this; he was orrible but he did not deny chilean passports to those that did not like him. nobody in cuba has ever seen one. they live in prison. what have you to say about that?

i am not an apologist, but the hypocrisy of those who hate him but have nothing to say about the cuban regime is nauseating. castro is guilty of many crimes, and he still has prisons full of political prisoners. pinochet is long gone.
Report polybot April 28, 2015 1:20 AM BST
I think you'll find obama has ordered the killings of more people than pinochet in just 6 years, pinochet was in office for 20
