Nobody's Child - Recorded by various down the years. About a blind orphan.
As i was slowly passing An orphan's home one day, I stopped for just a little while To watch the children play. Alone a boy was standing And when i asked him why, He turned with eyes that could not see And he began to cry.
I'm nobody's child, I'm nobody's child. Just like the flowers I'm growing wild. I got no mummy's kisses I got no daddy's smile. Nobody wants me, I'm nobody's child.
No mummy's arms to hold me Or sue me when i cry, 'cos sometimes i feel so lonesome I wish that i could die. I'll walk the streets of heaven Where all blinds can see.
And just like for the other kids It will be a home for me.
I'm nobody's child, I'm nobody's child. Just like the flowers I'm growing wild. I got no mummy's kisses I got no daddy's smile. Nobody wants me, I'm nobody's child

Certainly a sad song, but a bit extreme resorting to legal action!

incredible really, even the thought of what happened would crack most people up but singing a song asking whether your little boy would remember you in heaven is pretty hard to say the least

I'd like to nominate It's a Motherfecker by Eels. One of my all-time favourites. Very tragic story behind it for those unaware of the song.
David Fishwick Minibus Sales has been having trouble posting, but he's PM'ed me and asked if I could mention Billy Ocean's There'll be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry) which I'm more than happy to do.

A Hungarian song, "Gloomy Sunday" was first recorded in English by Hal Kemp in 1936, with lyrics by Sam M. Lewis, and was recorded the same year by Paul Robeson, with lyrics by Desmond Carter. It became well known throughout much of the English-speaking world after the release of a version by Billie Holiday in 1941. Lewis's lyrics referred to suicide, and the record label described it as the "Hungarian Suicide Song". There is a recurring urban legend that claims that many people committed suicide with this song playing
You can't get much sadder than that.

Lyrically, I would go for Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens. The contrast of the sing a long finale with the narrative which ends with him questioning his faith is very moving. It was the late Mrs Toteboard's favourite as well However, my nomination for the saddest piece of music ever is the Belgian sound sculptor Kreng's treatment of Chopin's Prelude number 20 in C minor. It was a mournful piece anyway, but getting someone to cry over the top of it makes it even more powerful; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIxkZF-6Iog
Cheer up chaps!

I suppose its how you as an individual define 'saddest'.
To me with a very few exceptions (Green Fields Of France, Enola Gay, Gloomy Sunday & perhaps "Will I see you in Heaven" Eric Clapton. The mass majority of songs mentioned are sad in only the fact that anybody bothered to record them and you have to be a total wuss for them to have any emotional effect.

Another shout for 'Casimir Pulaski Day' by Sufjan Stevens
Someone made a amateur music video for the song, on YouTube, that is just fantastic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhFBGHTmr5c but has barely any views!
“Casimir Pulaski Day,” the seventh track on the Illinoise, concerns a young man’s memory of the week leading up to the death of his dearest friend. It is unquestionably the best song ever written about a 12-year-old girl dying of bone cancer.
There is an adolescent and artless quality to the lyrics. There is no metaphor, no fancy fifty-cent words, no coherent structure. The story itself is poorly told; we must assemble and organize the traces of the narrator’s memory to deduce what happened. The music underscores this simplicity: the same four chords repeated over and over, uncluttered arrangement

Edward, see those alluring lights ? Tonight will be your very last night
A woman said : "I know my son is dead I'll never rest my hands on his sacred head"
Hindley wakes and Hindley says : Hindley wakes, Hindley wakes, Hindley wakes, and says : "Oh, wherever he has gone, I have gone"
But fresh lilaced moorland fields Cannot hide the stolid stench of death Fresh lilaced moorland fields Cannot hide the stolid stench of death
Hindley wakes and says : Hindley wakes, Hindley wakes, Hindley wakes, and says : "Oh, whatever he has done, I have done"
But this is no easy ride For a child cries :
"Oh, find me...find me, nothing more We are on a sullen misty moor We may be dead and we may be gone But we will be, we will be, we will be, right by your side Until the day you die This is no easy ride We will haunt you when you laugh Yes, you could say we're a team You might sleep You might sleep You might sleep BUT YOU WILL NEVER DREAM ! Oh, you might sleep BUT YOU WILL NEVER DREAM ! You might sleep BUT YOU WILL NEVER DREAM !"
Oh Manchester, so much to answer for Oh Manchester, so much to answer for
Oh, find me, find me ! Find me ! I'll haunt you when you laugh Oh, I'll haunt you when you laugh You might sleep BUT YOU WILL NEVER DREAM ! Oh... Over the moors, I'm on the moor Oh, over the moor Oh, the child is on the moor

Forever Young is a Dylan song. Superb track. I have it as uplifting rather than sad tho.
Among those I haven't seen mentioned.
Fake Plastic Trees - Radiohead. There is A Light That Never goes out - The Smiths Savannah Smiles - Okkervil River (particularly when you know the back ground to the song). Broken Heart - Spiritualized

Apparently this gets played at lots of funerals. I'm having it played at mine. You sentimental silly sausage!
When Fat Elvis sang it, he told a story beforehand of a dying man
I much prefer the Matt Williams performance, beautifully and immaculately sung live here at the BBC circa 1974. Very impressive how he holds that note for eternity at the end.

The older you get the more important the lyrics resonate with you, so i'll offer up a couple of songs i've loved for years, covered by many artists but for me the best versions who put such emotion into the songs are, The way we were-Gladys Knight, although Neither one of us is also wonderful by her, secondly Charles Aznavour singing Yesterday when i was young.
