any chance of a review this year, Joci, or at least a nod to the good/bad ones?
a list serves little purpose imo. |
|
By:
Lists are great in their own right, and don't necessarily have to serve a purpose.

But if inspired, I'll add a comment now and again.

don't know if posters who read this thread would read such literature but having just read 2 of kate Morton's books, I'd say, and believe me I've read a lot of classic stuff over the years, that they definitely fall into the 'best ever' catergory.

01 Run! - Dean Karnazes
02 Embedded - Dan Abnett Run! by Dean Karnazes was enjoyable short stories about his endurance running escapades. However, there's the feeling that this (his second) book was brought out to cash in on the success of his first best selling book Ultramarathon Man. There we're a few paragraphs of 'filler' in this one, but not too much to be disappointing. In terms of running books I think I'd recommend more the books by Christopher MacDougall (Born To Run), Scott Jurek (Eat and Run) and Adharanand Finn (Running With the Kenyans). |

Everything ravaged, everything burned - by Wells Tower. Short stories bursting with fresh dialogue (American) humour and insight. Given as a Christmas present so I had no pre-conceptions.

1. The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks
Totally expected to love this book as it was highly recommended and I loved the only other book of his I had read... Complicity. However I was disappointed, it was dark and it was weird, but it just didnt grab me, didnt really get my curiosity going at all. 2. Crime by Irvine Welsh OK, more of a crime thriller than anything, unearthing a paedo gang in southern USA. Not without its moments, but my least favourite of the five Welsh books I have read. Will get Porno soon, sequel to trainspotting, just as soon as I build up the courage to ask the matronly spinster type at the library to order it specially for me, no doubt n a brown paper bag. Got two more out today... Psmith, Journalist by Wodehouse and twenty thousand leagues under the sea by Verne, hope to finish them both within a month. |

http://www.newyorker.com/fiction/features/2008/03/24/080324fi_fiction_galchen?currentPage=all Well, I just read the novel and was disappointed. Obviously a v clever writer (with a 2nd novel coming) but to me her writig just seems to disappear up its own tunnel in longer form. |

I do like William Boyd and if anyone can post a link to one of his short stories, concerning an aged female Parisian snob writing to a younger comnpanion, I would recommend reading this very touching story.

Started reading 'Player of Games' by Ian Banks.
After about half an hour I still couldn't make head or tails of it so threw it across the room. Load of pretentious twaddle. |
