Only if he has skilfully avoided the Andes after losing an engine. Otherwise, it's his job.

I would certainly clap in the event of a safe landing that took great skill from the pilot due to a problem with the weather or aircraft. But in the event of a normal landing, the plane's computers are pretty much doing 90% of the job via the ILS/AUTOLAND system. So you are basically clapping a machine, which is stupid.

Yep, can't help myself. It's one of the reasons I got sacked as a pilot by Easyjet

if you are able to clap your hands then clearly your white knuckles aren't fully locked on the armrests and your sphincter is clenched tight enough, and your not landing in Wellington Airport.

Has anybody watched a plane land whilst sitting in the departure lounge of an airport and clapped?

I didn't clap when we landed at Funchal but I was pleased when he didn't plough the plane into the cliff I must say.
|
|
By:
Was going to mention Funchal too Slippy. Not so bad these days, but it used to be seriously hairy before they extended the runway. It's still de rigeur to clap on landing (on ETA flights at least).
The place is a time warp as it goes. Impressively has two top flight football teams with a tiny population (Maritimo and Nacional). Gave the world Cristiano Ronaldo for its sins. |

Not ETA, TAP.

just to add my ten pences worth, Saba, part of the Dutch Antilles was an experience. Officially the worlds shortest commercial runway at 1300 feet, the pilot has to land pretty much vertically and you finish on the cliff edge.
There were only about six of us flying and they didn't even close the pilots door. Still don't think we clapped but they are pretty chilled in the Carib! |

I shout 'in the hole' when someone joins the mile high club. ![]() To answer the question, it's a big fat NO, planes today are so sophisticated and advanced that the pilots are only actually fling the thing for 5 minutes, take off and landing, the actual flight is in automatic mode, i'm not clapping someone for 5 minutes work whilst n 100 grand a year They earn their money in emergency situations. |
