I visited this course on Sunday and noticed you could just walk on to the course at the 17th (the road hole) and walk about on the green and cross the famous little bridge to the 18th.
My mate had a set of clubs in the boot of his car, so we decided to get his putter out and have a few puts on the 17th,while we were playing a geezer came out running from out of the blue and said that's a £50 fine for PLAYING GOLF ON SUNDAY ,we asked him to point out the signs saying this but he just rambled on about Sunday laws, anybody heard anything like this before.

Last time I went to St A there were lots of golf courses there open on a Sunday, but I think the Old Course is generally rested that day.

Looks like you pair owe the Kingdom of Fife 100 quid, but I'll settle for 50 on this occasion given you were unaware of the ruling. I'll send a Personal Message through the system of where you can transfer the funds.

Your post reads that you have no respect for the "geezer" that "rambled on" about laws.
A little bit of advice when /if you go to court.  Ignorance of the law if no excuse.  Do not use your ignorance as your defence.
Did he geezer get you friend's car registration number?

Sounds like a jobsworth killjoy. Hope you played on and completed the 18th, Huggy.

The geezer walked away very quickly towards some out buildings, we just put the putter back in the car and then walked about the town.

ozmandius   that's makes a lot of sense what you said about being a jobsworth

Even Nick Faldo couldn't get the better of the Road Hole in his 1990 pomp, so it's no disgrace to come to grief there.

It's strange that they don't let people muck about for nothing on the most famous hole in golf. Wonder what the hidden agenda is there?
Report Huggy October 21, 2013 11:57 PM BST
May I say that there was a few other tourists walking about on the greens and fairways

Think yourself lucky you were on the greatest course in the world.
If you had did this at some manufactured layout like Augusta, you would most likely be dead now.
Report lfc1971 October 22, 2013 12:11 AM BST
Its a tricked up pitch and putt course.
Report TiptheOdds October 22, 2013 12:19 AM BST
The Old Course is a public course over common land. One other unusual thing about the Old Course is that it is closed on Sundays to let the course rest. On some Sundays, the course turns into a park for all the townspeople who come out to stroll, picnic and otherwise enjoy the grounds. As a general rule, Sunday play is allowed on the course on only four occasions, for major tournaments.

It does seem strange to be able to stroll across the oldest course in golf, and see groups of Japanese tourists taking photos on the Swilkin bridge, while locals walk their happily crapping dogs...

It is an offence to hang out washing or shake doormats in a public street after 08:00. (The
Town Police Clauses Act of 1847)Shocked

what a ridiculous attitude, if everyone took a putter for a go on the 17th green it was be farkin chaos and the green would be ruined.
you obviously think your a special case but that course is the life blood of that town so wonder they want to protect it from the more thoughtless tourists.

Glad this geezer never caught me peeing in the Road Hole bunker on the way back from the pub one night in 1995.
Can't imagine what the fine for that would be, it may well have been a Sunday too Blush
