http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2453613/Why-middle-class-children-speaking-Jamaican-patois-A-father-11-year-old-girl-laments-baffling-trend.html

This blokes daughter lives in Ashtead in Surrey which is pretty much 'stockbroker belt'. It's not just her though, my mate's son is 11 and as far as I know has been to Spain once, is white middle class, goes to a good school etc. He says things like 'yeah man' and aks instead of ask, which drives his Dad mad.

My local betting shop has always been a West Indian stronghold, some English bloke I know goes in there and when the brethren are giving it the  'big licks' he joins in and is barely coherent to me with his Rasta stylee talk. Yet when he speaks to me he has got the same accent that I have. It's all very puzzling I must say. Does anyone know what it's all about as I'm bemused by it all?

They are practising for when the grevilles take over the country, so their great great grandchildren will be fluent in it. Laugh

Better than teaching them Urdu I suppose.

do they do that thing where they flick their wrist in celebration?

They all seem to shake hands with an arm wrestling type grip too. Although all the tennis players do that

My mates lad does do the finger flick thing as well. The shank hands is a clenched fist on fist but to be honest I do that as well sometimes with certain people Blush It's a hygiene thing though.

Yeah, as I said, all the tennis players semm to shake like that. I guess it's seen as a more informal gesture. Not sure of its origins tbh

Paul Weller's the last person I'd expect to say that. In fact, he's the last person I'd expect to send his kids to a private school

He was married to a black woman wasn't he? Not sure if he had kids with her but I guess they'd be grown up by now.

Seem to remember seeing pictures recently of him with a very attractive woman half his age

This "white middle class kids taking in a Jamaican accent" is indeed a truly embarrassing phenomenon of our times. Little wonder they eventually later become Professional Offence Takers on behalf of our black citizens when a Pretendy Offence has occurred.

Speaking of which, a few years ago of course shortly after The 42 Inch Plasma Telly Riots of August 2011, Prof. Starkey was ludicrously slaughtered by "progressives" for making perfectly sensible observations about this ridiculous phenomenon of white kids trying to live like some Gangsta from the LA ghettoes. Or the Croydon ghettoes maybe.

Needless to say, he was quickly shouted down by the idiot liberal media.

yes privileged kids trying to act all street is utterly sickening - I'd force them to take the whole package, the nasty things that also go with the 'street' attitude.   ie beat them black and blue, take all their their money and make them homeless.  See how cool they think it is talking in code then.

Blame the tories; not only was daddy a liar but aitken's daughter tried her hardest to be anything but indiginous, to humourous proportions.

Nothing gets on my nerves more than this. Heard a couple of kids in the pub the other night "aks this, aks that" all flipping night.

Put me right off my jerk chicken and fried plantain I can tell you.

Awful development.

It's a bit harsh but it happens unconsciously for most listeners - you just knock 10 points off the speaker's IQ.

Which is a shame for Londoners.

Maybe it will change.

Kate Tempest is the only one I can listen to.

If I had a child who said "aks" instead of "ask" I'd be at social services explaining that the red mist isn't really avoidable in such situations SadAngryAngryAngryAngry. There was some idiot who used to come on the football forum calling people "blood".

white middle class children recognise only too well how utterly uncool and uniform they are, so they pretend they're from somewhere else.

it's not a new phenomenon.
