When I started senior school in 1980 everybody was feared to death of getting the cane. Only the bravest of the bravest wagged it etc. cos they got the whack if they got caught.

I remember everybody talking about a boy that was gonna get it as if he was gonna get stoned to death or something.

It was always on people's minds and I believe it stopped you from doing bad things. It made you more disciplined and you worked better.

About half way through my 2nd year, they abolished it and now you was untouchable. You could basically do what you wanted. Ok, you got detention - big fukcing deal! Or they told your parents - again it wasn't much of a punishment.

I started wagging it more and more and it wasn't long before I had the wagman round. I gave it a few weeks and started again. I left school without taking any exams. I was a failure!

I really believe that it's the complete lack of discipline that has contributed a great deal into the way kids are today. And obviously this is gonna effect unemployment etc.

Spare a thought for the cane makers!

The "bottom" fell out of the industry over night!

I wonder from where did these canes come and how did the school acquire them!

I mean they couldn't buy them on the internet (in my day), and it wouldn't be worth it for a rep to tour the country,
for a possible order of one cane now and again!

I would think that once a school had one it would serve for many years!

I really believe that those that administered this ritual just had to be masochistic b@stards!

I got six just once, at Grammar School (apologies to the member who thinks I shouldn't say GS) and I didn't do anything to deserve it!

I think I was in the second year and some bullies threw me into a three foot snow drift.

As I climbed out I threw a handful of ineffective snow, at the perpetrators, and was immediately set upon by the Nazi prefects!

There's no doubt that many teachers enjoyed dishing it out. It was a powerful tool in the wrong hands in many cases.
It certainly made teaching easier than it is today.

Nevertheless I think standards of behaviour amongst people have dropped since it was abolished.

A necessary evil sums it up for me.

Dr Crippen...

Yes I think you're right there. There was one teacher that I really believe was a gay paedophile. He used to tell you to bend over and touch your toes whilst he spanked you. It was always boys, never the girls. At the time I didn't think anything of it. I remember thinking at the time that his mannerism's were a bit strange and he wasn't quite right. I guess that in the 70s you could get away with things much easier.

I still say though that they should bring the cane back.

Sadly, we are way past bringing it back....Can you imagine if it were bought back now? The parents, in some cases are as bad as the pupils. Everyone has 'rights' now and litigation would be all over the place. You can't smack your own child, so what about someone else doing it?
I just watched 'educating Yorkshire'... edited cleverly but these pupils are doing what they like and the teachers just fire fighting.  Many children these days lack the empathy that perhaps used to be there.
I worry that we are going to run out of people that want to teach and where will we be then?
I work in a prep school and my job is 'easy' compared to those that do their job, particularly in secondary state schools and I take my hat off to them but that would not be my choice.
My daughter started an ofsted otstanding secondary school this term and my God ( her coming as a pupil from my school)it has been a baptism of fire for her. She cried herself to sleep on Monday night but that is life and whilst I love her as much as I do, it will, I hope 1) make her realise how lucky she has been to be educated privately for the first years of her life and 2) what the real world can be like. I still think she is lucky being in the school she got in to.

It's a quandary for sure! I've done a complete U turn on this. My Mum used to regularly beat the crap out of me with a riding crop, to the extent that by the time I was about 10 or 11, it was no longer a threat, and I'd laugh in her face. I only once gave my boy any sort of whack on his arse that he felt, and I felt terrible afterwards, and vowed never to do it again, and I haven't. I'd still not think twice about cracking heads for any adults that deserved it and the stage for talking has passed, but physical punishment of kids under the age of say 13-14 is wrong, because it is such a miss match, and sends out the wrong message.

What a stupid point sheppy

There are a lot of perverted teachers who would love nothing more than to whip a young schoolboy or girl, it would be a perk of their job,

second, today is very multi cultural, do you think people from all different walks of life would tolerate that - not only would their probably stab the teacher to death before they would allow themselves to face the shame and embarrassment of their mates taking the piss but their parents would probably come rushing round waving all sorts of religious texts about

Teachers would live in fear, gangs would find but where they live which in today's day and age is not exactly hard, and take revenge, maybe on their family too, set the house on fire etc. I could envisage kids ambushing teachers on the way home, beating the sh1t out of him and filming it, putting it on to youtube for all to see for the rest of his days - all sorts of repercussions,

A teacher at my school once grabbed someone by the back of the collar in the corridor after he was messing about, he swung around and smacked the teacher in the face, and he deserved it, you don't man handle hyperactive kids you're asking for it, fight fire with fire you;ll get burned.

Those that want to use the cane - it's a sign they have no control or they've lost control, they have no respect from the kids, you'll find the classes where there is less trouble in are the ones where the teacher commands the most respect from the way they hold themselves, from the way they treat the kids, using physical force to instil discipline is a massive sign of weakness on the teachers part,

Punishment will come in the form of long term prospects, the kids who refuse to learn and cause trouble will be the ones stuck in job centres their whole life blaming everyone else for their problems, that's the punishment.

Problem is, people that want to use a cane are driven by short termism and probably have anger issues themselves, not to mention being stuck in the past. it's 2013, they always has and always will be unruly kids for whatever reason, beating them is not going to change anything , it will make things worse not better

Teachers have to realise - you have to earn respect not ask for it. shouting and beating doesn't do that, it comes from good communication skills, you don;t treat every kid the same, you get to know their personality and learn how to handle each kid differently.

IMVHAHO.
Report HRH The Lager Khan • October 6, 2013 3:10 AM BST

most teachers dont deserve respect. none of mine did. all they did was tell us all how useless we were and how we would never achieve anything. most of em were utterly clueless about the real world. just sat in their poncey office judging kids who didn't even know who they were yet.

those who can, do. those who can't, teach.

the one i got all the time was "your gce's/gcse's (whatever they were called then) will determine your entire life" yeah right. whatever. i left school at 15, never took any exams. went to college, dropped out cos i hated it. eventually sorted myself out and got a degree. it didn't turn out to be much use, cos i started my own business. earning more than any of my old teachers ever did, i'm sure.

the thought that some easy, widely passed by any fool and relatively pointless exams at 16 determine your entire life is frankly utterly absurd. most kids reach 20 and haven't the faintest idea where their life is going to lead.

Haha! Do you guys ever go to bed!!!Laugh

So it seems that most people aren't in favour of it, saying that it doesn't do any good or makes things worse etc.

I understand that compared to the pain some kids go through at home the cane would seem like being hit with polystyrene etc. but no system is perfect is it???

I think though that overall it would be a good thing. If it stops just 10% of kids from wagging it etc. it'd be worth it.

I'm looking forward to my next load of stick!Laugh

So you want to recreate a more violent society for the vast majority of kidsjust so thatyou would stop 10% from wagging it?

I prefer the present situation where the unruly kids can be obnoxious to their teachers and to each other verbally but not physically assault others because it is deemed unacceptable.

Bringing back the cane will just create more violent and bigger monsters like the criminals of the olden times.

We live in a more benign and better society and we should not encourage children/future adults to resolve their conflicts through violence like we did before.

It was only the headmaster (or deputy head) who dished out this punishment, the rest of the teachers all had their own unique ways of dealing with unruly boys (was an all boys school). I remember the headmaster's words before the first thrash nigh on sizzled my buttcheeks off.."This is going to hurt me far more than it's going to hurt you"...the jury is still out on that one.

It never did me any harm and I didn't dare go back on the roof again...I bore no malice towards the Head teacher and didn't harbour thoughts of slashing him or attacking him...it was part of school life, just take your punishment and move on. 1) Have a great afternoon playing computer games by a nice warm fire with my mates.

2) Have a really boring history lesson, followed by an extremely tedius geography lesson.
