In France, the film was nominated for eight César Awards and earned Omar Sy the César Award for Best Actor.

God, you must watch foreign films. The ones that make it into English language world consciousness are almost all excellent.

I cry, and unashamedly so, at the 'clips scene' in Cinema Paridiso, can't help myself.

Wings of Desire is a brilliant call. Anyone who's seen it won't be surprised by Bruno Ganz's performance in Downfall. If he were an English speaker, he'd be compared to Olivier. The angel and the devil. Best male actor of my lifetime.

The Decline of the American Empire
and

The first is better, although the latter is more lauded.

Yes, "Das Boot" is definitely up there.

"The Page Turner" is one of my favourites. Just up my street being into classical music!

And a film I saw quite recently that was brilliant is "The Stoning of Soraya M." It's quite graphic but very powerful.

It surprises me how many people say they couldn't watch a film that's subtitled. How some people miss out!

The Secret In their Eyes..........  Argentinian (won Oscar for best foreign film a few years ago)

Two other (well-known) and excellent French films:-

A Very Long Engagement -   beautiful love / clever mystery / action war story entangled effortlessly
The Chorus - Superb music, and like most French films the ending nicely hidden (as opposed to Hollywood efforts where you know it before you start!)

(Slight deviation, I was in Boston many years having a few pints in a bar - got chatting to barman and a few regulars, we started discussing films (movies to them of course)...Road to Perdition had been released. I enjoyed it, thought it was really good...all of them thought it "could have been great, but the ending "sucked"Confused. Must have happy ending otherwise its "unpopular").

Can I nominate the brilliant Trilogie, directed by Lucas Belvaux.

It's actually three films:

On the Run (a thriller)
An Amazing Couple (a rom com)
After Life (a melodrama)

You can watch them in any order, but all three films feature the same characters and events. You won't fully understand any of them until you've watched them all, but they're all pretty good in their own right. Set in Grenoble.

Also Breathless (A Bout de Souffle), is a French New Wave classic. Well worth watching. Unlike the awful American rehash.

La Haine. Vincent Cassell has come a long way since then, but it's a great film.

Loved Run Lola Run, which got a mention above. Very original.

Infernal affairs is also absolutely brilliant. There are 3 of them I think, but the first is the best.

City on Fire - Tarantino totally mugged this off with Reservoir Dogs. Definitely worth a watch.

All the Studio Ghibli movies are great - generally dubbed versions are available so maybe not foreign language per se. Spirited Away and Laputa the best two IMO.

What's the one set in Communist Germany where the mother goes into a coma and wakes up after the fall of the Berlin Wall? That's pretty good.

Seething. I've had Cinema Paradiso on the shelf for ages and ages, but kept watching rubbish instead and putting it off.

I finally got around to sticking it on...Yes, it's a very good film, I can see that...He's quite cute as a little kid and the old bloke is very funny and you can see him breaking your heart...but...

...the little fecking kid...

...when he grows up...

...looks exactly like Cristiano Ronaldo. And I hate Cristiano Ronaldo. I managed to put up with another 15 minutes, but as soon as he got the girl I just had to turn it off. It was just like watching Cristiano Ronaldo with his greasy hands all over some bint.

It really is a shame, because it could have been an excellent film.

I was angstroms away from starting a new thread about this, but I reflected that "Massive Problem with Cinema Paradiso" was a bit specialised.

Trouble is, there are a lot of of Chit Chatters who aren't going to look at this thread but think Cristiano Ronaldo's a c*nt. Some of the poor bastards are going to invest all that emotion into it, just like me, only to find that the little pr*ck's spitting image is suddenly there in front of them with no warning at all after 70 minutes.

In the interests of honesty, and please understand that I say this with neither pride nor embarrassment, I was in a somewhat altered state yesterday. I’m prepared to concede the possibility that the 300 micrograms or whatever could have been in some way responsible for the conclusion I came to.
