The -ible/-able suffixes are the ones most likely to catch me out as there seems to be no general rule...a bit like the occasional
-eous endings (eg. miscellaneous) though they're relatively seldom by comparison.

One word I remember getting wrong in a quiz about a decade ago was minuscule, even though my version (miniscule) is still in the dictionary - as you can guess...we lost in a tiebreak that night
Report sheppy123 September 29, 2013 8:16 PM BST
Phew! I think I prefer your version of miniscule!

With it still being in the dictionary I thought it would've been accepted?
Report Navel-Gazer September 29, 2013 8:27 PM BST

the_pessimist - That's quite freaky that you mentioned separate cos I only found out recently that I've been spelling it wrong for years. I was using e instead of a - seperate.

I could never remember the right way to mis-spell Sami Hyypiä.

Sami Hyppia
Sami Hiipya
Sami Hipyya

They all looked plausible and acceptable. It was just the correct spelling which looked obviously wrong.

Emden...

For most of my life I spelled it like this... "definately"

Then, several years ago, one of my email friends said that because I was a good speller (the only thing I'm good at!) she was surprised that I couldn't spell it properly, saying it was spelt "definitely".

So from that point on I've always spelled it like that.Happy
