London hotel help please

Paddington courts hotel (Best Western) is the place I stay very nice appartments also at good rates google them have a look if Paddington ok for you

For value for money and a great location I'd go for The Strand Palace Hotel, I have stayed there a good few times. It's walking distance to Covent Garden, Soho and all the theatres. Oxford Street, Regent Street both close enough to walk as well. If you fancy splashing out a bit more The Waldorf is nearby and The Savoy as well of course. It's about a tenner in a taxi from Kings Cross.

Really need to know how much your willing to spend..

I always found Southwark handy although my priorities were different to yours (alcohol). Nice enough area, close to city centre, tube station and there are a few chain hotels. I preferred the Travelodge as I was only in the room for a few hours to sober up.

May I recommend the Natural History Museum as the wee man will be at the age where he would love the dinosaur exhibition.

as regards budget what would £150 a night get me at the end of July? I'd rather spend more and be comfortable than scrimp and be dissapointed.

from personal experience avoid the Andaz chain very overrated. The hotel at Chelsea FC is very nice and 5 minutes from Fulham tube. Lastminute usually have some good deals for their mystery hotels (that's how I got the Chelsea one) you just give them the are you want to stay at and they will then email details of the hotel when booked.

The strand one is £850 with breakfast that would be ok in all likelihood its going to be a bed for 4 nights location sounds good too.
Looking at the Charlie and The Chocloate Factory musical(dont laugh john92) anyone heard anything positive about it ?

If they throw Wonka bars into the audience Biscar will go regardless of the reviews.

The west end is so busy that if you are staying there and doing touristy stuff there it might get a bit much after a couple of days but I'm not used to crowds...

I'd strongly recommend you get Oyster cards before you go aswell to save time and get reasonably familiar with the tube map. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/

Well I'm surprised you can get change for a grand at that time of the year, that sounds more than OK to me. As John said the Natural History Museum would be a good choice to go as would the British Museum which is nearby. Also Hamley's in Regent Street worth a visit, the youngun will love that! Biscar, it's not Claridges, don't get me wrong but it will be spot on location wise and it's absolutely immaculate and very well managed.

john92 any benefits of an oyster card over a day/week travel card?

The history museum is quality as already stated, and free! The queue will look massive but it moves pretty quick and well worth it once you get in there, even if just for the dinosaurs and the architecture of the building

In terms of money I think its a fiver to get a card which you can get back if you return the card, and the fares work out cheaper.

A zone 1-4 anytime day travelcard for example is £11.

With an Oyster card, single fares are about half the cash price and once you reach the daily cap of £10.60 for zones 1-4 you won't pay any more so it always works out slightly cheaper than a travelcard.

If you get an all day card and end up only having a couple of tube trips then it's still £11. Two trips with an oyster card would be half that.

To put it simply you won't lose out if you end up not using it as much as you though.

Most important for me though was that it saved you queueing to buy a travelcard each day but if you bought them online and got them posted then that's irrelevant I suppose.

Also you can top up the oyster card on the way out, at the end of your journey so there's no reason to come home with unused credit.

I should have made clear in the first paragraph that it's a fiver (I think) to get an Oyster card, which you can get back if you return it.

Also my mum managed to work it alright when her and my dad went to London so it's not hard to use!
