My wife's uncle was a founder member, long story why the course was opened in the first place but it will open up a can of worms I wont go into, we have booked the clubhouse & hall for my sons Barmitzvah there in March next year.
Report zilzal1 June 18, 2013 9:45 PM BST
Rings a bell from my youth, where exactly is the course?
Report pumphol. June 18, 2013 9:52 PM BST
Past Chigwell on the way to Theydon Bois, off the beaten track a couple of miles down a country lane.
Report SlippyBlue June 18, 2013 10:06 PM BST

Abridge was the first course designed by Henry Cotton & holds Open Championship regional qualifying,  next year it will celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Never sewn rough like it, off the fairway you are looking at a snowman.

Cheers Pumpy, think i played it as a kid, Chingford was the 1st course i played, you had to wear a red top in those days

Talking about Barmitzvahs has made me really fancy a slat beef sarnie nowSad cant remember the last time i had one...
Report pumphol. June 18, 2013 10:34 PM BST
Brick Lane  you can get your  salt beef sandwich any night zil, with a large sweet & sour cucumber of course.
Report zilzal1 June 18, 2013 10:37 PM BST

You knew Tom Jenkins then zilzal, The John Power Organistion? The twins were the nuts of greyhound bookmakers.
Report zilzal1 June 18, 2013 10:42 PM BST
I was next door with StanleysLaugh the Beef rolls at Wembley wern't bad eitherPlain
Report SlippyBlue June 18, 2013 10:51 PM BST
I was at Wembley one night, some bloke had 10,000/1600 with Tom Jenkins. He left the 6/1 up. The bloke had the same bet again, Jenkins said OK and he knew I'd be in as well. He said to me "Blue, ready when you are" So I dived in as well. Got nutted right on the line! Hackney on Saturday mornings was where I served my  apprenticeship, he was the top layer thee as well.
Report SqueezeFirmly June 18, 2013 10:57 PM BST
Hackney on Saturdays was a blinding place.

I got asked to leave once for betting on trials in the bar. Cool
Report SlippyBlue June 18, 2013 11:02 PM BST
Hackney was the absolute dogs, literally. If Pearl didn't drop ciggie ash on your full English breakfast platter you felt offended.
Report themightymac June 18, 2013 11:22 PM BST
I`m sure it`s a nice course but I`ll stick to Gleneagles, thank you.
Report Fenway June 18, 2013 11:23 PM BST
I am playing my second round of golf in 20 years on Friday at Melton Mowbray, which is apparently in poor condition. I wish it was at Abridge.
Report themightymac June 18, 2013 11:27 PM BST
Melton Mowbray? A decent trainer was based there but can`t remember his name?
Report themightymac June 18, 2013 11:27 PM BST

Report SqueezeFirmly June 18, 2013 11:45 PM BST

Report themightymac June 19, 2013 12:04 AM BST
Yes Squeeze - twizzle22 is the poster formerly known as salsabil from early days. A good egg.
Report themightymac June 19, 2013 12:06 AM BST
Bye the way SF, did u have another nom de plume in early days?
Report jed.davison June 19, 2013 12:21 AM BST
Zilzal, I used to live fifty yards from the first fairway at Chingford. used to go round in the twilight with a seven-iron. Took some nasty divots out of the greens. Please don't tell me they have relaxed the dress code.
Report jed.davison June 19, 2013 12:22 AM BST
Sf has had more names than Lloyds.

My grandmother used to live to the left side of the fairway on the 18th at Scarborough South Cliff. Loads of free golf balls :)

Not a bad course as it goes. She was ladies' captain for a year too.
Report History Maker June 19, 2013 11:30 AM BST
Toughest course that I've played is probably one of the courses at The Vale, near Cardiff. Not made any easier by the gale force winds and near horizontal rain.
Report zilzal1 June 19, 2013 11:51 AM BST

Back in the betting game ( via coral call centre)..hated the airport gig but love working on the phones.easy job , no pressure and nice to chat to some of the old customers about the good old days, Salsabil, Sharastani, Glencroft days etc.On the subject of golf i have been playing for 30 odd years and discovered a guy on you tube who has transformed my game.I play off  12  and this guy has lowered my handicap to ten. I went around Abridge yesterday in 79 1st rnd and 81 second and it is a tough course. Here is the link and i can guarantee it will work for you.

Cheers salsabil! Glad you have found a better job you enjoy. Half the battle with work is whether you like it. Nothing worse in the world than getting up to go to a job you hate. Great to see you back! Good luck!
