My desk is an unpainted MDF self built job.
I want it black.
Whats the best wat to go about it. I have a mouse sander, so sandings not a prob, but what would you use to paint it?

Take it outside (important) and give it several coats of oil and petrol.

Oi b0llockchops. My Dad built me that. He's a quality chippie and it's a nice job. I asked him to leave it unfinished as I couldn't decide on how to finish it.

Ok, sensible reply now.
First important thing is to gently sand off the hard edges, as no treatment is successful otherwise!
If the desk is not so big as to be impractical (expensive) I would get some large spray tins of satin black.
If it is going to be prohibitively expensive I would get some satin black paint and apply it with a small roller.
You can get these quite cheaply from places like Wilkinson's, and they come with a choice of foam, fibre and polyurethane replacement cylinders.

Couple of coats of acrylic wood primer as first coat will just sink in to the MDF, a coat of dark undercoat then a coat of black gloss/other.
Light rub down with a soft sandpaper before each coat

Turn the desk upside down and practice first where it won't be seen!

Just don't forget that you have to gently sand off the sharp edges as it will be useless otherwise.

.........and, when I talked of trying underneath first, do that anyway to balance the job. otherwise you could have some movement of the pieces.

Couple of coats of acrylic primer - non-white would be best...then apply MATT BLACK. Not sure what matt black is, but it's not water based...you need white spirit to clean your brush.
paint it with Blackboard paint. You can do designs on it then like these.
