hi I have been doing some football betting and have had a dispute as my name wasnt the one on the account. I wondered if anyone could give me advice

I wanted to bet with coral for teir odds on a market and thought i had an account already although i hadnt used it in years.

it was an old account and I must have entered the details wrong a few years ago as I was at uni with a friend we just put a random name in...

last week I logged on - registered my card and bet for a whole weekend - winning £1450 (for a change) -  but they refunded only the the money a few days later and suspended the account. I cannot get the money as the name is not mine and is fictional - we put a random name in as we shared the account.

I must have bet all those years ago once or twice with my card and did not receive a refund on my bets

I know this is a silly thing to have done but wondered if there is any way you think I could get my money back? and how I could do it the quickest

Thanks for your time

I would think it very unlikely you will get your money back. You broke the rules at uni by using a false name.
Report rob_dylan • May 5, 2013 10:25 AM BST
IBAS?
Report rob_dylan • May 5, 2013 10:26 AM BST
Just guessing but perhaps there is a rule that says the money, technically, doesnt belong to the bookie.  That doesnt necessarily mean it belongs to you, but might be the starting point for a case with IBAS.
Report naydam • May 5, 2013 11:30 AM BST
You must have entered the details wrong??!!

You KNOW that you entered the details wrong! Why?

There is something about your story that seems (to me) to be very suspicious.
Anyway, all you've got to do is to prove that the false account is actually YOU and your mate and then you should probably end up with half each. He WILL be pleased! Laugh

Change your name by deed poll
Report stewardsenquirey • May 5, 2013 11:47 AM BST
They took the bet,now they need to wear it.
As Rob says send a polite email explaining your situation(if you had lost would they still have refunded your stake ?) No Chance!!!
Threaten to take them to IBAS.
Use Twitter and social media to kick up a fuss if they refuse.
£1450 is less than 1/2p when it comes to it the Big Firms.
Don't stand for it!!!
(But next time, why not just open a genuine account)
Report stewardsenquirey • May 5, 2013 11:49 AM BST
The only way you can have problems if you have
A)Self excluded
B)Had your account limited
Otherwise YOU WILL GET YOUR MONEY!!!
Report STUDYFORM • May 5, 2013 11:59 AM BST
It will have much to do with concessions/free bets.

If you opened the account in order to use their introductory offer or free bet of some sort and then did it again they'll almost certainly have clear rules stating no-one can have more than 1 account.
If, however, you won the bets with your own money and not as part of any special offer, then you have a small chance of being paid.

Call customer service and ASK FOR THE MANAGER or whoever's in charge. Have a good excuse ready as to why you opened a fictitious account and that you forgot it was there, and was never used etc.

More than 1 account is frowned upon by the big firms.
Report stewardsenquirey • May 5, 2013 12:15 PM BST
You think he only has a small chance Study ?
I'm the opposite corner.
Soon as they took his bet it's game on.
If you and I had a bet(you'd win with my luck currently)
And then I refused to pay you you'd be rather irate with me(and if I had blocked your account for winning too much money off me I shouldn't have taken the bet)
I think too many people fold in these situations and leave it in the satchels.
Man Up,and get what your owed!!!
Report STUDYFORM • May 5, 2013 12:37 PM BST
It really does depend on if the money for the bets came from the punter's card or was a free bet of some sort.
There is no question he should argue for it, but the big firms have staff who want to earn brownie points and they'll resist as much as they can.
Any chance they have of establishing any form of dodginess on the account holder's part and they'll use it.
They'll say the onus is on the customer to know the rules and T's and C's.

Your idea of threatening lots of fuss will help.
Report rob_dylan • May 5, 2013 12:39 PM BST
But either way the money doesnt belong to the bookie.  So could ibas force them to give up the money, then where does it go?
Report stewardsenquirey • May 5, 2013 12:43 PM BST
Threatening in the right way is always good(obviously not f eing and blinding down the phone is a No No)

I can't help thinking the way the OP hasn't replied leads more to this than he is letting on.
Hopefully I'm wrong.
Report STUDYFORM • May 5, 2013 12:52 PM BST
The money is already the bookie's rob. The argument is whether it was won fairly and according to their rules.
IBAS will always find in favour of rules and fairness.
Also, we don't really have enough information to go from the OP tbh.

thanks studyform and stwards i am going to ring now. i will let you know what happens. i will ask for the manager. I really appreciate your help and for the record I know it got it wrong in the first place but this sequence of bets was genuine. I even tried to chage certain details and they will see that.

just one last bit of advice if you dont mind.

Do you think I should be polite but suggest i will have to take the matter further....admit i obviously made a mistake but it was ignorance more than dodgyness and finally is it worth me suggesting it is in their best interests arguing the bookie always wins? I was betting 300s and 500s surely they would like me as a customer??
Report stewardsenquirey • May 5, 2013 1:22 PM BST
You have to stay calm, and be polite(even if the person on the other end of the phone is telling you that you won't be getting anything, call will be recorded anyway)
Just let them know that you will not let this drop and will go through the correct procedures to get back the money you are owed)
Won't hurt to mention you are prepared to go public on their twitter or FB account if they wanna play hard ball.
Just stay calm,be polite and make sure you are not going to let it drop.
Hopefully they surprise everyone and agree it's a genuine mistake and will send funds back to you on Tuesday.
Good luck.

Once you've made the call, and if they dispute it.We'll plan our next attack on them.
Report reet • May 5, 2013 1:25 PM BST
much appreciated stewards
Report STUDYFORM • May 5, 2013 1:28 PM BST
If your bets are that big they'll definitely want you as a customer.
If they don't offer to pay you should tell them you're going to take it further, and also tell them you'll tell the press.
Report JamesBlakesHugeArse • May 5, 2013 2:09 PM BST
so you were allowed to register a card in your name to an account not in your name? Bit odd that.

If you are winning then they wont want you as a customer, could well be an arber or scalper.  I hope you are successful but can see why they would tell you to get lost, opening an account in someone else's name is banned everywhere
Report reet • May 5, 2013 2:14 PM BST
james -yes i was and they let me bet all weekend. This is what i was disputing as it would have been better for me to open a new account and get a £50 bet but I thought i had an account already so checked if i could log in.

so annoying.... just rung - as i did last week and I was give samme rubbish - they are very reluctant to discuss the account.

the lady (manager) was very polite but basically said she couldn't make a decision as it needs to be discussed with the security department and you cannot speak on the phone to these people. I have to write to them instead. this could be a very long and drawn out process.
Report JamesBlakesHugeArse • May 5, 2013 2:25 PM BST
it will be, i have had several disputes go to IBAS and SBR, varying degrees of success

IBAS will take a long time, SBR, if they think that you are in the right, will take things up pretty quickly.  The problem is that many, many people have dozens of accounts in different names at sites like coral, so you may be lumped into that group
Report reet • May 5, 2013 2:28 PM BST
thanks James what is SBR? Ihave heard of IBAS. And how quickly is quickly?

problem is i would rather speak to coral because I think I may be able touse a bit of reason to talk them into allowing me to take the money.

However they just say its an issue with security. do you think they are playing a game here or that is genuine?

Thanks
Report JamesBlakesHugeArse • May 5, 2013 2:43 PM BST
genuine, plus today is sunday so department probably isnt in, wait until tomorrow

SBR is sportsbookreview.com, have a look at their complaints procedure - they have some sway in the industry
Report reet • May 5, 2013 2:44 PM BST
thanks james when you say they are quick are we looking at days?weeks?

also IBAS how long would this be likely to take?
Report stewardsenquirey • May 5, 2013 2:46 PM BST
It will be procedure, and not against your personally.
The lady you spoke to doesn't have the authority just to send over £1450.
Did she say when or who would look at your case ?
I would lay it on thick saying you really need the money to pay your mortgage or something, and you need this to be treeted as an urgent case.
Remember the squeaky wheel, gets the oil!
Just keep badgering them daily(not hourly) but it does sound like it may be a drawn out affair.
The main thing is you get the money you are owed.
Report reet • May 5, 2013 2:48 PM BST
thanks steward much appreciated i do need the money!! still worried i wont see any though will try and be as squeky as possible
Report Ovalman. • May 5, 2013 2:49 PM BST
Many site's (if not all of them) don't care how you fund your account but are sticklers when it comes to paying out. KYC checks are fair to stop multi acounting, when Billy Hills found out I had 2 accounts, I was forced to close one but I got my money in the end.

Good luck and keep us posted.
Report stewardsenquirey • May 5, 2013 2:50 PM BST
My fingers are x for you mate.
Don't wanna give you false hope, but I think you'll get it.Just a matter of when.
The bank holiday won't help you as they are bound to use that as an excuse Sad
Report reet • May 5, 2013 2:51 PM BST
thanks again stewards  ovalman its good to know you had two. how long did it take to get your money?
Report naydam • May 5, 2013 2:52 PM BST
How much of this money do you intend to give to the other joint account holder? Or were you going to keep it all?

What does Mr. Fictitious say about your good fortune? How does he feel about you using the joint account without his knowledge. How much of the potential debt would have been owed by him?
Are you sure that you're not telling porkies?
Report Ovalman. • May 5, 2013 2:56 PM BST
As soon as my other account was closed - one phone call.

You are in slightly different circumstances but don't lie to them from now on in, it will only come back to haunt you.
Report naydam • May 5, 2013 3:01 PM BST
I don't think he could spot the truth if it was stood in front of him with a neon sign on it! CoolCoolLaugh
Report reet • May 5, 2013 3:06 PM BST
naydam there is no point in me lying on here. the other joint account holder is not real and so i could not give him money.

the time when i got it wrong was approx 4 years ago when i opened the account. I havent disputed that

when i signed it i genuinely believed i would see my name on it - but wanted to get the bet on.

As i have told corals - it would have been more beneficial for me to open a new account and gain £50 free bet.

i feel so stupid anyway. its so frustrating when i could have put the bets on with a different company and have the money in my bank
Report dodgybettor • May 5, 2013 3:14 PM BST
SBR's main man for sportsbook-related disputes left around 4/5 months back. He had some success dealing with Europe-based books. Now, all SBR has is bunch of uneducated morons. If I were in your place, I would avoid them.

Did you bet with Coral before making this bet? You have a case for refund of those bets. Best to try it through IBAS.
Report naydam • May 5, 2013 3:17 PM BST
Hmmm. I probably misinterpreted your original post. It seemed as if you and a 'uni' friend had embarked upon this together.

My apologies for any misunderstanding.
Report stewardsenquirey • May 5, 2013 3:18 PM BST
It won't feel like it now,but it's a good learning curve.
Bookies don't roll over millions each year from being soft touches.
Which is why they are known as the enermy.
Getting money in,is never a problem, getting money out can be a whole new ball game.
Oval seems the most clued up with your situation, and I think the advice about just being straight up with them is the best.
Just keep pestering them on a daily basis(but stay civil at all times)
All the best.
Report naydam • May 5, 2013 3:23 PM BST
So what happened to the money from your previous winning bets?
Report reet • May 5, 2013 3:24 PM BST
thanks steward maydam no worries i have be dishonest in the past by not putting the account in my or my mates name. It has come back to bug me now. I only posted on here to see what people genuinely think as I was getting to the point where I thought I would not see my money and its a bit upsetting
Report reet • May 5, 2013 3:24 PM BST
the first time i opened the account i dont think we used it much. Maybe a day of bets - with my card (in my name) there were no winnings....
Report reet • May 5, 2013 3:27 PM BST
....then there was a period of atleast 2 years probably much more.... i logged in as all my accounts - betfair, bet365 etc are the same login..

i then deposited and lost my bets

the next day i deposited again and won my bets, withdrew the money  - the only check when withdrawing and it was then they cancelled my bets refunding only the amount i deposited the winnings are still in the suspended account
Report naydam • May 5, 2013 3:40 PM BST
Sounds like you are asking them to pay the money into a different account than the one on their records. I'm a bit confused by it all.
Your biggest problem might be that things have tightened up considerably because of 'money-laundering'.
Report reet • May 5, 2013 3:50 PM BST
i have asked them to either -
change the name on the account to mine
create a new account and transfer the balance (both I have said is in thier interests as i would bet with them instead other other bookies)
or if they wanted they could send me a cheque

this is why im a little worried
Report naydam • May 5, 2013 4:07 PM BST
But, of course, they don't know who YOU are. They ain't gonna change account names with a phone call. The balance in the the account belongs to the account holder and without his permission they can't do anything. How can they know that he doesn't exist?
To be honest, you will struggle to give them any sensible reason as to why you opened an account in the name of a non-existent person. It just reeks of identity theft or some other scam. They are very wary of such anomalies.
Best of luck with it, and as an earlier poster said, you will have learned a lot from your error.
Report reet • May 5, 2013 4:25 PM BST
your right naydem.

i have argued that only my card had ever been used and will provide my driving licence.  I am paying a price for some stupidity when i was younger.

I have also said they should be able to check where bets were made from.

i have learned i am an idiot and at best i have given myself lots of stress and wasted lots of time.

thanks for your advice
