Just to report, I live in ex mining town. Fireworks lighting up the sky.A lovely sight on a great day.
I did not realise until today she was a supporter of apartheid in South Africa and called Nelson Mandella a terrorist.

Some of the worst vitriol is coming from people who have no recollections of Thatcher as PM. Our 15 year old niece has been so brain washed at school or by her step dad that she has pronounced to the world on twitter that this is the happiest day of her life. I just don't understand it at all.

I left school at 16 straight into full time work.
29 years later I still work for the same people.
Was never a student, never been unemployed. Never been on a protest march, I own my own house, never rented one. I'm married with 2 kids, and am from the Tory loving Essex

British manufacturing was fooked because it was uncompetitive, mainly because of globalisation. Unskilled manufacturing is a dead duck in the Western World. The country had to change and had to be tough. Britain has to compete in a global economy now which means it's hands are tied with regard to certain policies. The goalposts have changed. It's not even a political football as all parties know this is the case.

When trains were powered by coal and steam and everyone had a coal fireplace I guess there was a big market for coal. Not much sense in selling it overseas for 30% of the cost of digging it out. Times change, businesses reach the end of their natural life and the mines had to close.

I see the state of the country, and what affects me and every person like me in the UK and know where the fault lies for many of the problems in the country in this day and age. As I see, it's largely down to Thatcher, her Government and the selfish, spiteful, 'me me me' attitude she created.

You can liken the economy to Betfair and the Premium Charge. As the exchange market is a natural monopoly, they can charge the biggest earners a much greater share of their profits. They can't charge poker winners a greater share of the profits because they'll just up sticks and bet elsewhere and should the exchange market have competition, the people that make the markets and provide liquidity (business) would just up sticks too.
That's what happening more and more with the economy. It's more global, there's more competition, less Communist states, and you can't tax high like you once could.

They are beginning a massive expansion of coal fired plants because they are being held to ransom over electricity imports, and don't say it is dirty because their is carbon cleansing of coal now which was invented by us.

The UK was not a perfect place in the 80s but it was progressive. Unions who had f**k all interest in the country were defeated. The UK is alot better place today because of her. I celebrated her death Joe. I'm 60 and have woked all my life, the last 30 in healthcare where, I hope (know), I've contributed to helping people recover from various problems.

In 2012 the UK imported 44.8 million tonnes of coal accounting for around 40 % of our electricity production . The coal mining industry continues to increase in value world-wide and the value of coal has massively increased.
Uk coal is of the very highest quality and should production have continued the Green Agenda would have ensured it was by far the most profitable in Europe . Thanks to Thatcher's lunatic short termism we're now living hand to mouth on dirtier imported coal that is subject to ever increasing tariff and shipping costs when we are sitting on over 3 billion tonnes of high grade coal that needs less processing .

The vast majority "Celebrating" her death are 5cumbags who contribute f**k all to society. She took over a cesspit of a country which left its dead and rubbish to rot on the streets. The UK was not a perfect place in the 80s but it was progressive. Unions who had f**k all interest in the country were defeated. The UK is alot better place today because of her. She rewarded people who wanted to work and contribute towards society.

I left school at fifteen and I've never been unemployed. In all that time I've only ever claimed sickness benefit (or equivalent) for a couple of months. I always wanted to work, and did, and contributed to the society which Thatcher said did not exist. She did not reward me, or indeed many millions of people. I do remember her rewarding her son though, with £12,000,000, for signing an arms deal with the malodorous regime in Saudi Arabia. Which regime was the more corrupt is a different question.
If the UK is a better place today because of her, why are there so many people happy that she's dead? If she was any kind of good at all, why is she still causing such obvious division?

Alias people will always help their own or would you not help your own son/daughter get on?

Capitalism has always tried to refuse work to union members. It's not in their interest - get it?

I'm no expert but wasn't the mining industry losing a great deal of money when the decision was taken to close the pits and concentrate on gas production instead?
About 1/3 of the pits ran at a loss in absolute terms but this fails to take into account the extended cost , the loss of supporting industries , social benefits , etc . It net terms it would have been cheaper to the treasury to keep them open . Particularly galling given that it was fairly obvious that the continued rise in oil prices meant that coal would continue to increase in value .
Instead the Tories chose ideological war and short term gain turning to a reliance on millions of tonnes of cheap South American coal produced on the back of slave labour to burn for power . Incentives were given to build gas fired power stations despite the fact that British gas reserves were only a quarter that of coal.
As this century progresses im sure we'll come to realise what an economic disaster this has been .

If we ever need to take coal from under the ground again all the skills to do so have been all but lost. Never mind though , I hear those Poles are quite good at mining.
I think more of a problem of not having the skills would be getting enough feckers to work down there.
at least we will still have coal for our gas fired power stations when the world has run out
Germany are scrapping their nuclear power stations and building more coal fired ones as they also have to import electricity. Their neighbours Poland are rubbing their hands at all the extra coal they will be selling them.
