This is interesting... Pitbulls and rottweilers account for most deaths.  I was curious to see how many 20-40 year old blokes were killed by dogs because i cant ever recall a story lime that.  There are a few, normally killed in their home by their own dogs.  I stand by my old line that I would never want to live with a dog that could kill me if it ever chose to.

What dogs could kill a grown man, one on one?  Rottweilers pitbulls and?  Alsations?  Dobermans?
Report brendanuk1 March 26, 2013 7:36 PM GMT
Dobermans just look scarey, ones I knew were highly strung and scared of their own shadows. I couldnt imagine them causing any trouble to a grown man fighting for his life

My mate had a doberman, lovely dog,but massive, yet skinny/lean.  He told me it weighed eight stone which i found remarkable, that is as much as a not very heavy man, god knows what a big fk off rottweiler must weigh.  Wouldnt fancy my chances v a rottweiler but reckon i could have seenoff the doberman.

Dobermans are stupid to breaking point, which makes 90% of them quite nice pets and 10% of them a f*cking menace.
Report rob_dylan March 26, 2013 7:50 PM GMT
This doberman used to sit with us after football.  Good as gold then at least once a night he would suddenly start barking outbof the blue at a random person.  Didnt attack at all but the poor unsuspecting person was always a bit perturbed, i mean this was a big dog that looked very menacing.  My mate reckoned it could sense the person was scared.  Cowardly fkers dogs, look how often they attack the very young and very old.
Report History Maker March 26, 2013 7:55 PM GMT
I honestly don't have a clue why anyone would buy a Rott, Dob, Alsatian, various bulldogs as a pet.

If you're getting a dog as a pet, why not get something which has no record of attacking humans, as opposed to one that does. I like retrievers, but labs, spaniels, greyhounds, whippets, all sorts of shooting dog, and all those annoying terriers haven't got much of a record for causing humans much harm.

Can someone tell me why they've chosen an aggressive breed as a pet, as opposed to one of the aforementioned well-behaved, affectionate breeds?
Report rob_dylan March 26, 2013 8:08 PM GMT
Pitbulls are illegal right?  I suspect it is largely a macho bravado thing.  Having said that matey with the doberman wasnt like that, and it was a lovely dog.  He had a young (five years old?) daughter and he said he would leave her and the dog in the same room for short periods of time. I said i would never do that, why take the risk ffs.

My sis has a lab/collie cross, delightful little bitch.  The dog was lying on the floor when i was looking after her kid, under one years old, and i was letting him stroke the dog and holding him at the same time, one second i wasnt paying attention he put a bit of weight on the dog in that tender area under the belly... This lovely natured dog turned and gave an aggressive growl and perhaps opened its mouth as if it was ready to snap.  That was when i was there and actually holding the baby.... You cannot be too careful with dogs and children.  I mean you never know what a kid might do, might just go and poke a dog in the eye unthinkingly or something daft.

Ive little doubt that all dogs, even pitbulls and rottweilers, can be lovely good natured dogs under the right circumatances, but why take the risk.  Black labs are the best imo.

Injuries to humans by dogs need to be considered in a risk management and epidemiological context.

Dog-bite fatalities are, for example, extremely rare. According to DEFRA's website, there have been 5 fatalities since 2007 (an average of one a year).

As with all injuries, the description of ‘serious injuries’ is itself subjective and subject to instability in definition, but certainly life-threatening injuries due to dog-bite also appear to be rare, according to quantitative data. To put the relative risk of death from dog-bite into perspective: In 2010, 1,850 people were killed in road traffic accidents, with 1,901 killed in 2011, according to recent government figures.

North American figures show that one of the largest source of lethal danger to children is from family caregivers, hundreds of times more than dog-bite (see Bradley, 2008: 21-22). To compare the two categories of causes of death in children would require a graph 8 feet tall in order to incorporate the ‘death by caregiver’ category. Figures from the Home Office indicate that on average 2 women a week are killed by a male partner or former partner.

To place the risk of injury from dog-bite into perspective, the relative risk of dog bites was studied by Kahn et al (2003) who found dog bite injuries were about one quarter as frequent as road traffic casualties and about one third as frequent as burns at home. Child attendance at Accident and Emergency departments due to dog bite equalled less that 0.24% of all children attending Accident and Emergency departments.

This is not to trivialise dog-related injuries, especially in children. However the low relative risk of dog-bite injuries has to be taken into context if rational and safe social policy and law are to be made.

You forgot to mention that the uncle (it's always the uncle) is so muscle-bound from pointless days spent in the gym instead of working, yet the bull mastiff still has a thicker neck.

Out of resentment and neck envy, he hits the dog repeatedly with a baseball bat, so the dog eats his niece to show him who's boss.

SCHOOLGIRL Jade Lomas-Anderson, 14, was mauled to death by five crazed dogs when she came back to pal's house with a meat pie. One of the animals leapt at the snack and as 14-year-old Jade tried to fight it off it grabbed her by the throat and dragged her to the floor.

The four others then joined in, savaging the helpless teenager.

Three years ago - outside Kings Cross station - thin tatooed bloke with dog on long lead - yap yap yap yap - doesn't control dog.

Kings Cross on the other side of the road (dogs had been in the press that day) - around the corner comes similar tatooed yob - you know the sort - shirt cut off at shoulders - beer can in hand - dog on end of lead  'look at me with my tats and ferocious dog'  - pathetic - they are definitely shooting the wrong animal - not the dog either!!!!
I know the above is nothing but is indicative of an attitude.  They do not care a fk!!!

I would like to hazard a guess that the animals are untrained, poorly exercised and totally lacking in any mental stimulation. A house full of frustrated, mindless beasts...and that includes the owners! Angry
Probably owned by a drug-taking/dealing fella or a stupid woman who thought it was clever to 'teach' the dog to 'jump up' when it was younger. Probably also allows the dog to beg for food when eating. Sad

Bit harsh HM to include Alsatians on your list. Of course their are flawed exceptions to a lot of breeds, usually exacerbated by moronic owners. Couple of rotty's have tried, but the only dog that has ever bitten me was a bastard Jack Russell!
Report naydam March 27, 2013 12:43 PM GMT
HREH. I'm glad you posted that. I wanted to but thought it might lead in an off-topic direction. But these ill-educated owners could make absolutely any animal aggressive with their total lack of understanding of what the dogs needs from you in order to function properly in modern life.
As for training, exercising and caring for FIVE dogs...that would be a full-time job in itself!

The 'Alsatian' is not an aggressive breed, unlike many smaller animals. He does have strong protective instincts towards his pack members...but then, so do most of us!
For example: Police dogs aren't trained to be vicious. They are trained to play a game. The more they make the 'victim' (in the protective training suit) squeal, the more praise he gets from his owner. And then he gets his reward...a quick play with his favourite toy! That's all he really wants.
Report DONEMYLOT March 27, 2013 2:04 PM GMT

Report Biscuit1979 March 27, 2013 3:08 PM GMT
As usual it's down to the owners. If you keep any animal, especially bigger dogs, confined in a small space together then of course they're going to get agitated and angry. All down to the people responsible for the dogs.

Once told by a professional dog trainer the only breed he would never trust was a Border Collie.
Claimed it was the only dog he wouldn't trust if he turned his back to it.

Agree with above comment regarding mental stimulation.
Asked same trainer when I got my weimaraner as a puppy and he told me if you don't give a 'large breed' mental stimulation then thats when they can turn destructive and aggressive.

Jack russels the most aggressive dog from my experience.  Ive only been bitten twice.. Once by an alsatian, on the @rse, when walking the fields of bedfordshire, blatantly not my fault.  Other time when i stroked a tied up jack russel outside a shop, he was ok until I made a relatively(and accidental) sudden movement and disturbed the gravel floor, my fault.  Both times i thought little of it, but they actually drew blood both times and didnt realise til later, which surprised me.  The massively important point is a jack russel cannot maul to death anyone who is more than a toddler.  Certain dogs should surely require a licence of some sort or just be banned like pit bulls.
