You should watch McShane in Deadwood. Superb. His passing of bladder stones was the best I've seen. Did a nice cameo recently in American Horror Story as a murderous Santa Claus. Nailed a priest to a cross - but who among us hasn't at one time or another?

Some of the Jonathan Gash novels on which it's based are excellent.
Anyone who's gambled for a living or been a racecourse regular will recognize the liars, dreamers, thieves and the utterly desperate among Lovejoy's circle. Plus the way for days on end his life revolves around raising enough cash to buy a pasty to see him through to the day when an opportunity appears. Firefly Gadroon is a good one, especially the opening passage where he's describing all the crooked bidders at an auction he's conducting. And there's a real appreciation of old buildings, old customs and old craftsmanship. |
