I phoned Buckingham Palace today and ordered the card, didn't think I'd be repeating the exercise 10 years later when I phoned them to advise of my sister's forthcoming diamond wedding anniiversary in 2002.

6 months to go, would be nice if they could make it.

86 years together - and couple still smiling!

Karam and Kartari Chand who have just celebrated their 86th year together Karam and Kartari Chand who have just celebrated their 86th year together

A Bradford couple who celebrated their 86th wedding anniversary this month could be the UK’s longest married husband and wife.

Karam and Kartari Chand, of Washington Street, tied the knot in a traditional Sikh ceremony in 1925.

They have just celebrated their 86th year together, which they think may qualify them as the UK's longest married couple.

Mr Chand, 106, and his wife, 99, were born in a small rural village in the Punjab in northern India. They emigrated to Bradford in 1966, where Mr Chand found work in the mill trade. They went on to have eight children, 27 grandchildren and more than ten great grandchildren.

Their daughter Kaushalya Devi said there was no secret to her parents long marriage. “I just think they have had a happy time together. Simple co-operation, patience and just getting along has been the key to it all.”

Mr and Mrs Chand live with their youngest son Satpal, who is the landlord of the Castle Hotel in Grattan Street, together with his wife and two of their four children.

Mrs Devi said she thought a good diet and a close family had contributed to her parents’ long and happy lives.

“Living with family is a big help and support,” she said. “The company of family helps them to pass time and stay alert instead of them being alone in the house.

Report kenny mann • June 14, 2013 11:50 PM BST
73rd! That's brilliant. Congratulations to them.

Mum married her first husband in about 1927. It produced my step-sister the same year. Sadly her father died in 1936, aged 36. She the married my dad in 1943 which produced me and my full sister. Sadly he died in 1953, so poor mum was widowed for the 2nd time at age 47.
