Father-in-law, who is to computing what I am to ballet dancing, has been moaning for best part of a year that his PC runs slow.
I looked a few times and changed his settings for deleting cookies and all the other crap you get. The first time I deleted them was a year ago, it took almost 35 minutes for the PC to clear them all, which gives you an idea of how long it was storing them for. I changed the settings to delete them when you close the browser.
He had every search bar known to man, which took up a lot of the top of the screen, and when I asked why he had that many he said 'I need them'...I know he has no idea why, so I didn't bother asking.
I've tol him that all he needs is Google, but I may as well have been talking to a plant on the windowsill.
Why he needs am ultra-fast PC is also beyond me, the only thing he does is buy and sell coins on e-bay.
Over xmas, my nephew, his 14 year old grandson, said he had too many search bars, so he told him to get rid of them, which he did, then iirc, he used Avast to clean it up, and did a 'defrag'.
I have no idea if it worked fine since xmas as you don't get any sensible answers.
He phoned yesterday 'I can't get anything.' So I asked him what he had done.
He said 'The screen came up black with white writing on it, it said 'INSERT DISC AND PRESS ENTER'. He said he has no disc, but he pressed 'ENTER' anyway...
I went round there just now, switched it on, and the screen came up that you normally get when it shuts down unexpectedly.
Choosing the 'Last known good configuration' was the obvious choice, so I did it. The PC turned itself off and a 'NO INPUT SIGNAL' message came on the screen.
How can it not have a 'last known good configuration' ?
He switched it on again, and this time I tried 'open in safe mode', it did the same again.
He then tried every choice available, and the last one was 'open using command prompt' all with the same result. A message of 'NO INPUT SIGNAL' and it turned itself off.
He has no idea what anti-virus software he is running, or if his Firewall is turned on.
In the absence of Londis Lagerhound, are there any whizzkids out there who can offer a sensbile solution?
He probably has, but given the state of the room, it could take a year to find it.
He's not in the top 5 million for tidiness awards.
I'll go back later and check the cables.
Stow-Judge therein lies a problem - he says he has no disc. He probably has, but given the state of the room, it could take a year to find it. He's not in the top 5 million for tidiness awards. I'll go back later and check the cables.

Search on ebay for HIREN's boot disk (cd) This lets you access your PC again - Lets you reinstall all your old software etc. Costs £2.50 including postage. You should also look into replacing RAM chips/slots if the PC was SLOW.

Burt, the father-in-law is an impatient bastard, he could;nt be arsed to wait for information, so he got hold of somebody on the phone to come and give him a fee-free diagnosis.
Which will cost him enough in the end.

Tommy Toes 09 Jan 13 00:33 Ah. Has he tried hitting it with a hammer?
He may as well, Tommy.
If something doesn't happen in a millisecond he clicks it again, and again, and again etc...
