What's wrong with it?

Just a bit of a boring dump really - golf course isn't bad though. As a base you'd be better off with either Scarborough or Bridlington imo.

Filey great for a day, walk on the Brig, Fish & chips etc, would never stay though.

Bit parky in season, never mind out of.

Good walks nearby at Bempton / Flamborough or inland going up into the North Yorkshire dales. Scarborough is okay for nightlife (only 'okay' though!)

Only after something with a decent dog friendly beach (which it seems to have) and good walks nearby so probably still fits the bill. Near enough to Scarborough and Whitby for day trips.

Better beach for the dog than Scarborough or Brid. Walks along the Brig at low tide can be spectacular, with the real prospect of seeing seals. Just make sure you check your tide times....
It's a bit of a dull little town and not remotely picturesque, but as you say, a decent base for visiting other spots. Take a spin up to Robin Hoods Bay at some point.

Stayed in Staithes a couple of years back and so visited Whitby a few times. Parked by the abbey and walked from Whitby to Robin Hoods Bay. Decent walk and Robin Hoods Bay is a nice little place to find at the end of it. Might do that again.

Staithes is correctly pronounced Styerths.

You can walk from Whitby to Bay...and indeed all the way to Scarborough along the coastal path (long, but amazing views) or the old railway line, shorter, but less spectacular. Filey was always considered a bit of a poor relation. You can get decent B&B in Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay or Scarborough for 30 quid a night.

I wonder if anything has changed since the late 60's!

A college friends parents had a caravan at "Seadale" camp site.

We went regularly with the guys/girls for crazy weekends and had amazing, and usually eventful times.

Spent too much time sitting outside "The Fords" in the sun trap yard in the shadows of the landlady's knickers!
Many pints of "Cameron's" were enjoyed there, accompanied by the fishermen singing in the bar.

I tried to kill myself a few times whilst I was there.

Walking on the rocks of "Filey Brigg", full of "Camerons", I took a nasty fall and was hurt everywhere.

Going up the hill from "Cobble Landing" in my new Cortina GT, taking the left hand bend on wet cobbles and the car just went straight on int a convenient lamp post!

I broke my collar bone playing footie on the beach which was not the best experience!

Clowning around on an old butchers/bakers bike that we found on the beach, and the guys decided it would be great fun,
to push me and Tony (sitting in where the basket would go) at great speed into the sea!

Taking a drunken short cut across the golf course two of two of the guys  ran into a pond and went headlong into the water.

On one occasion we met two of the most gorgeous Swedish girls (Kirsten and Agnetha) on the beach.

Problem was there were four of us and I was driving.......

We had intended to go to the "ScareCrow Festival" at Muston last August and then onto Filey for a few hours, but it never happened,
so will have to try again this year.

I should add that the problem with Filey is that you can set off, on a rare sunny day, and then drive into a heavy sea fret,
in the last mile or so!

My ma and pa used to take me there as a kid. We won Father and Son compo, my sister and ma came 2nd in Mother and daughter and I was 2nd in the Fancy Dress as something akin to Coca Cola Boy!

It was okay as a 6-year old. Would imagine its shyt now. Go to Aldeburgh instead

Sounds a plan Roger. However, I would concur with others that to stay nearer Whitby and make Filey a day trip, rather than the other way round, would be ideal.

Makes sense but really wanted a cottage overlooking the beach with almost direct access to it, so that's why Filey is the draw as something came up there. Nice to be in Whitby but won't have access right onto beach from a cottage there.

Walking with my wife and two children along the promenade at Filey one morning I found myself suddenly grabbed by the elbow, whacked in the chest with a newspaper and a complete stranger proclaiming, “The games up, Chalkie!”

Disentangling myself from his grasp I learned that the newspaper with which I was being struck had a man in the town who would, if you identified yourself to him in this manner, give the whacker a hundred pounds.  Explaining, that I was not the gentlemen in question produced a look of immense sadness on the face of my attacker who shrugged his shoulders and said, “Well, it’s all a bit of fun ain't it?”

Fun it was, but I am not sure for whom as in the next twenty minutes I was accosted at what seemed to be the rate of once a minute.  I good naturedly demurred at each approach and the family started a new game called ‘Here’s another one coming.’  Finally, my children tired of the game and wouldn’t walk with me. I was too much of an embarrassment and they departed to leave me to make the return journey alone. Which only served to increase the attacks upon my person and my family’s delight at my misfortune.  One man even managed to give me the whacking - attacking treatment twice.

These were actually the cottages that I found that made me enquire as to whether Filey is an ok destination for the week. They are steps from the beach and dog friendly so just what I am after.

I watched Silence of the Lambs in the old cinema there in the 80's, quite an atmospheric place, would think it will be closed down now .

Surprised to hear Gary Barlow is appearing at the Futurist,didnt think that would be his sort of place thesedays, Still the kids and i enjoyed theChuckle bros there last year (no really!)

It was next door to the pub at the north bay promenade, many years before the apartments were built .
