very subjective I know, but think this one at he end of this cover version of 'While my guitar gently weeps" (featuring Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn and George Harrisons son Dhani) has to be up there. Surprisingly it is by pint sized funk master Prince, and it blends excellant musicality, technique and showmanship. Superb stuff...

I am sure we can all point to some amazing feats of fretboard fingering on youtube, but there is more to music than how fast you can play the notes.....
Can Prince be beaten? I lay down the challenge.....
Oh, and can someone explain to me where Princes guitar goes at the end of the performance, its got me baffled
Prince fantastically underated musician and a truly great solo but in terms of pure emotion , musicality & dialled-in ness i think Jack White trumps him . Solo starts around 2.22 .
Raconteurs - many shades of black

the steve morse thing is very clever and technically great, but Princes emotional playing is still tops, nothing presented thus far has convinced me otherwise, Jack white comes close and certainly has some 'ooommphh' in his playing but overall Prince is the errr King.....

mmmm Dave Gilmour/Pink floyd, could be some contenders in their back catalogue, does the posh boy from Cambridge have what it takes to challenge Prince, I'll be back later after some listening and thoughtful consideration......

Saw Jack white in Blackpool last month and he was outstanding as always, but his White stripes gig their in 2004 was astonishing. I was there too, search youtube for under Blackpool lights, different styles, different guitars and you can see he means every note he plays, who the feck needs a bassist when you can play like Jack.

Jeff Baxter, I'm quite sure

Think it was Elliot Randall Alpha.. though all Skunk's stuff is excellent. Also Larry Carlton played an astonishing solo on one of theirs.. unfortunately the name temporarily escapes me!

Wouldnt it be great if you got three legendary guitarists, say Jimmy Page, Jack White and eeer The Edge, in a room with a load of guitars, amps and effects and just filmed them for 90 mins whilst they play to each other, teach each other and generally discuss guitars for 90 minutes or so, What!! , you mean somebody has done this! and there is a youtube link!! well here it is....

That documentary was great. However there is only one legendary guitarist on it. Page however does come across as humble. Thanks for posting it.

Not keen on solos here either and altho I appreciate the dedication needed to achieve highly technical playing I find most guitar heros unlistanable tbh, I love Henrix, Page and Ron Asheton riffs tho.
Solo wise I'd put up Tom Morellos string rubbing and kill switch work on Bulls On Parade, in between his ridic funky playing it sounds great, it really brings the song together dude.

Sultans of Swing Mark Knoppfler of Dire Straights. Sweet Child of Mine Slash of Guns n Roses. Hotel California by The Eagles. Turn to Stone by Joe Walsh are 4 without even racking my tumultuous brainpower!
I hope this enhances the appreciation of guitar genius by my fellow forumites.

There is no greater guitarist on the planet than Mr Earl Klugh.
Todd Rundgren "Theme to Utopia" is decent
Not a fan of The Carpenters, but Tony Peluso did a great job on "Goodbye To Love "
Agree with Donny about George Benson. Brilliant guitarist whose career hit the skids when he decided to sing along.
Jan Akkerman deserves a mention.

Too many speed riffs have been put forward for the award. A more refined art is incorporating the space between the notes and the riff needs to live and breath a great song.
So the award must go to Dave Gilmore

Jesus Ampleforth, watching Page kick into Kashmir in an intimate setting like that gave me goosebumps. Without a doubt Led Zep are my obsession in music.

I wouldn't go that far lfc but i do think we're coming from a similar place. Sometimes a solo brings a cringeworthy moment to an other wise good song imo, I've never heard a song and thought it would have been improved with a/nother solo.

This might not be the greatest guitar solo ever but it's "close enough for rock'n'roll" - enjoy Nils Lofgren (3.45 on )

Punk Rock bands were full of virtuoso incapable musicians. That was the idea. No need to be a musician just believe in your ideals.
You can`t knock the rock guitarists who were capable of virtuosity.

Having the capability to be a virtuoso does not mean it is your sole aim. However it adds different dimensions to your ability. I would rather call them `guitar breaks` rather than the limper`solo`....
I mean imagine Led Zep without their Page`s guitar breaks. They don`t have to go on for 5 mins but a virtuoso guitar break done well with a dirty groove transcends the tune.

I've got a mate who is a huge huge fan of Nils Lofgren, he's clearly a blinding musician, he's worked with some top people. I'm not really a fan of The Pistols tbh, almost everyone else is so maybe I'm missing something.
Beyond the fretboard wanking the tone used during solos often isn't pleasing to my ears, I like rock n roll riffs or soundscapes with delays here.

Robbie Robertson does a wonderful guitar break on The Bands song "It makes no difference" It is during their live concert The Last Waltz and is if anything surpassed by a short saxaphone break towards the songs end. If you listen to it it will give you goosebumps..sublime!!
