the high protein no carb works well as it controls blood sugar.. therefore limiting cravings.
blood sugar control is the absolute cornerstone of successful weight loss.

You'd lose weight if you were able to stick with it, but it would f*** you over completeley. You'd have next to no energy and due to lack of protein your body would start to cannabilise muscle (not good), add to that the lack of vitamins and minerals and your body would be a train wreck
I'd follow Barzalona's advice... Low carb / high protein is the way ahead.
If you read get yourself a copy of the Diet Delusion by Gary Taubes, it's long but it's a brilliant read.

I would leave the fasting until the new year... the diet i listed will 100% work, you wont get bored, you wont get hungry and you will be happy IF you simply stick to it.
You can fry your veg in butter if you want... fat is not what makes you put on fat.. its sugar.
Carbs, like bread, pasta, rice, biscuits, sweets... breakdown quickly into sugar by the body...this causes the release of insulin.. and insulin is the EVIL.. as this makes you store fat.. if you have no insulin in the blood.. you simply cannot store fat into cells.
Eat all the meat, salad, veg you want... have a nice juicy steak one evening with fried onions... but no chips or bread.
It works.

Also, the release of insulin is what causes craving of junk food as the insulin spikes into your blood and the drops off fast, this drop triggers the body to crave more food that causes the spike again... bread, sweets, pasta etc
If you want a treat at the weekend... go maccies, but just take the bun off the cheeseburger and eat the meat and cheese... obviously no fries.
Its as simple as that... meat, veg, salad, eggs.

The key nutrional number to keep an eye on is the grams of carbohydrates you intake daily.
Less than 30g is optimal.
So have a look on the can of soup... sweetcorn is fine.

That's wrong, the only thing that makes you fat is excess calories. You could just eat simple sugars and fat and lose weight if it was under your calorie maintenance. It wouldn't be healthy and would cause a lot of other problems but you would lose weight.

losing weight is a piece of p1ss once you stop listening to the modern world's take on it.
the diet and food industry all have vested interests.
Eat less - fasting works and has worked for thousands of years. stop eating snacks - we are not built to snack. Eat fat, not sugar - look up what is called Paleo and you will find the reasoning there. Lift Weights, move slow and sprint every now and then
enjoy.
This worked for me and have recommended it to a few people and they have also seen dramatic results.
i agree with starting with low carb, which obviously will kick start ketosis and pretty fast fat loss. Just be careful if you have underlying health issues.

absolute nonsense i am afraid. I fry nearly everything in ghee or coconut oil and I have never been slimmer and healthier. I just avoid all the rubbish oils like sunflower, vegetable etc. and my ghee is pure.
A fried breakfast in coconut oil (without bread) cooked in coconut oil would be better for you in the long run than the cereal people eat every day.

That's a terrible diet deansthemann, absolutely awful. You would lose weight on it and plenty of muscle as well but you won't keep it up and anything you do lose will eventually come back as you will inevitably crack at some point.
The best way to lose weight is not to starve yourself but change your life time eating habits. If you don't eat enough your body will stubbornly hang on to the fat as it goes into starvation mode. The body isn't interested in looking good it wants to survive and by depriving it of food it will hang on to every bit of it's fat reserves for as long as possible.
If you want to lose weight you need to eat healthy. Cut out the alcohol and simple sugars.
I've currently trying to lose a bit of fat myself and I'm eating virtually all day.
I have a bowl of porridge with semi skimmed milk and for the rest of the day I eat home made soup. My soup contains 2 lbs of turkey, carrots, onions, broccoli, sweet potato, kale, cauliflower, tomatoes with a stock cube and a bit of salt and pepper. I get my fair share of protein with the turkey and the veg is low in calories.
I'm eating this all day so my metabolism speeds up with the intake of food but there isn't that many calories to burn.

I was introduced to the whole carbo case a while ago... I was put on a simple test to prove it.
I was asked to change my daily breakfast of a coffee with 2 sugars and milk with a bowl of cereal, a heathly one like all bran or shredded wheat to eggs cooked however I wanted, fried in lard if you want and a choice of smoked salmon or bacon... and a black coffee.
Just that one change and no extra exercise (play 5 a side often) and I lost 5lbs in 3 weeks... and I was not overweight to begin with in the slightest... that loss was all fat.

There is evidence to suggest that going over your daily level of calories (2500 for a man?) but only via protein with no carbs inducing insulin production results in no fat gain... as fat cannot be stored in the cells without the presence of insulin.
Obviously your weight would stay static and to actually lose you would need a daily deficit.

there is a huge argument at the moment concerning calories. Some experts think they mean nothing and it is the macros that count (i.e. fat/prot/carb) and some think they do.
Whatever the argument it is nigh on impossible to eat nearly 2,500 calories when you eat things with fat/butter and little carbs. You are full for hours so the argument is a bit redundant really.
Also, eating small meals through the day to speed up your metabolism is a myth that has now been proven to be wrong.
by the way, you need to read up on what actually happens when you put weight on. It not excess fat. It's excess sugar that the liver cannot process http://www.obesity-info.com/2012/04/sugar-make-you-fat.html

Wake up and drink a lot of room temperature water immediately. Drink quite a bit.
Two hours later, have breakfast:
Breakfast: 3 tablespoons oatbran (oatbran, not whole oats. Try Mornflake) boil in saucepan with a mug of water, when boiling add a tablespoon of flaxmeal and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Add 1/4 mug of water mixed with a half-scoop of vanilla protein powder. Stir well and when bubbling again chuck in 3/4 of a chopped apple; handful of crushed walnuts and a handful of sultanas. Mix in and add a dash of zero calorie maple syrup (Walden Farms pancake syrup). Pour into a bowl and top with a chopped banana. Have with a half glass of apple juice. Mug of green tea would be better but pressed apple juice is fine, just not too much. This breakfast is delicious.
Drink water. Plenty of water. You know you're getting enough when you need a piss every 30 mins.
Lunch: Tuna/Salmon/Chicken/Turkey salad. Minimal dressing. Drink some green tea. Soup with a Food Doctor pitta break also ok.
Afternoon snack: flan/custard: Crack 5 eggs into a bowl and whisk. Heat 375ml of milk with a vanilla pod scraped out into it. Include the pod. Don't let it boil. When warm pout into the bowl. Add a teaspoon of nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1.25 teaspoon vanilla essence, 1/5 cup sugar substitute (I use Total Sweet). Whisk and pour into four separate ramekins. Sprinkle some cinnamon on top. Place ramekins in an oven tray and fill tray with boiling water up to 3/4 of ramekin. Put in a pre-heated oven at 155 degrees (if fan-assisted) for 35 mins. This obviously makes 4. Leave to cool and put in fridge. Can have one a day. Have with mug of green tea.
Dinner: baked fish and sauteed spinach. Put some white fish on some foil, sprinkle a tiny amount of salt (salt is really bad when trying to lose weight as soaks up water) and pepper, a drizzle of fresh lemon juice and drizzle of olive oil. Place some sliced ginger on top with some thyme. Wrap up in the foil and put in a 200 degree fan-assisted foil for 18 mins. Dice some ginger and garlic. Slice some shallots. Rub a tiny amount of olive oil on a frying pan, heat and add the chopped stuff. Then add 3 large handfuls of spinach and sautee until wilted. That's dinner. Have with cup of green tea or apple juice if need something sweet. Dessert: fat free yoghurt, preferable vanilla otherwise something with no added sugar/fructose, raspberry better than most.
Make sure you're still drinking lots of water.
Weigh yourself when you wake up first thing every morning.
Can't believe I typed this out. I lose about 1 lb per day with this and don't really need any exercise, although it obviously helps. Drinking copious amounts of water is really important.

Barzalona, yes, I'm aware fat plays a part in a healthy diet, but going to McDonalds and omitting just the bun and fries is not healthy.
GPT, Barzalona is correct re the water. Try it and see what happens. P1ssing every 30 minutes was an exaggeration, but try drinking around 3 litres of water throughout the day and see what happens.
Cubanpete, I can trade on here whilst making that breakfast. Easier/quicker than it sounds (especially once you've made it a few times) and delicious. Excellent source of complex carbohydrates, fibre, various vitamins/minerals, protein, etc and tastes great.

TP - I take your point, but I did say "go to MCd's as a treat... and just eat the burger and cheese" this is far from unhealthy if done once a week as a treat. Most low carb lifestyles require a day every 7-10 days where you increase calories massively, as discussed by somebody above eating just low carb it's night on impossible to go over the daily calorie levels as the most calorie laden foods in our diet are carbs... but if you continue to exist on a calorie deficit your body begins to shut down and slow down its metabolic rate... so a weekly push up is a good thing.. and the McD's was just in line with that.

Yep, fair enough with your McDonalds example, nothing wrong with a treat every now and then.
I'm just not a fan of diets that concentrate on weight loss at the cost of health. I think high protein/low carb with next to no concern about fat content is not a great way to healthily lose weight. You'll get more than enough (healthy) fat from fish and nuts.

we just aren't aware of the fact that FAT is good, SUGAR is bad.
Nothing wrong with ghee at all, although coconut oil is much better for you.
i eat about 60% FAT every day and I have never been in better shape.
My typical day:
Breakfast - Coffee with coconut milk and a bit of coconut oil or ghee.
Lunch - Big ass Salad - e.g. with Prawns/avocados/eggs or chicken/bacon/anchovies.
Tea - Meat (usually cooked in coconut oil/ghee) and vegetables (loads of them). I will generally only have potatoes or rice after a workout.
The fattier the meat the better, forget chicken breasts - no real nutritional value, its too lean.
Lost 3 and a half stone and nearly 6 inches on my waist since i started eating this way in little over a year.
i will also chuck in a 24 hr fast once or twice a week.

d13phe, you are making one big mistake - fat (especially ghee, very high in saturated fat) raises cholestorol in the blood. This is of course incredibly bad for the circulatory system. You may lose weight and feel good, but you wont be thinking about that when you've had a heart attack.

you need to broaden your horizons.
"This brings us to that evil substance, saturated fat. Or, at least that’s what we’re supposed to think of it. Saturated fat can, in fact, raise LDL levels, but it raises the good LDL we talked about before, which doesn’t increase the incidence of heart disease. In fact, a paper by Siri-Tarino et al., published in 2010 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, reviewed 21 studies, including 347,747 subjects, and concluded, “There is no significant evidence for concluding that dietary saturated fat is associated with an increased risk of CHD or CVD [heart disease].” But before scientists, even scientists who endorsed the Paleolithic diet were aware of the distinction between the different kinds of LDL, they demonized saturated fat, including plant sources like coconut oil and palm oil.
Coconut oil or palm oil is actually a great source of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), a type of saturated fat that can be used very quickly as energy in the body. In many studies, MCTs have been shown to help people lose weight. One of the fatty acids in coconut oil, lauric acid, is a powerful antiviral and can also increase HDL, the “good” cholesterol in your body. So much for coconut oil’s bad reputation!"

There will be many more studies which come to the opposite conclusion. If you think a diet containing 60% fat is good for you, then that's your choice, but it sounds like madness. I hope you don't regret it.

d13phe, just because some quacks say saturated fat is good for you doesn't mean it is. I could so what you've done and quote a review of 48 studies:
A 2011 systematic review from The Cochrane Library analyzed 48 studies conducted between 1965 and 2009 and included 65,508 participants. All studies reduced or modified participants’ dietary fat or cholesterol for at least six months by at least 30 percent. It was found that reducing saturated fat by reducing and/or modifying dietary fat reduced the risk of having a cardiovascular event, such as heart attack, stroke and unplanned heart surgery, by 14 percent. Of the 65,508 participants, 7 percent had a cardiovascular event.
------
However you look at it, there are many areas of nutrition which are contentious. I'd advise everyone to be sensible and consider the potential negative effects of your insides, not just how much blubber you lose. Many people say excess saturated fat can lead to heart disease, some people don't. In my view, it's incredibly naive to assume the minority are correct and so ignore the majority. To me, it sounds like people want this to be the case - like I'd love to find a scientist say pastries are really healthy - and so cling to it.

I've mentioned this on a chit chat thread before, but if you ever want to learn about how dodgy a lot of the scientific studies on nutrion are particularly those done on the subject of cholesterol, diabetes, the effects of saturated fat and other things, then have a read of the Diet Delusion by Gary Taubes.
I'd personally be careful with how much you attention you pay to scientific studies, they can be manipulated very easily, often just so that a scientist can prove himself "right" and keep the research $$$ coming
Ansell Keyes was particularly dodgy, he managed to villify Saturated fat with his seven countries study which he used to show the link between saturated fat and heart disease... The problem with his study was that he used 20+ countries and discarded the data from the ones that didn't match his theory of Saturated fat causing heart disease. The Diet Delusion is full of examples like that. If you think fat is bad for you but can at least be open minded give that book a read and see wht you think of the way scientists came to the "saturated fat / chioleserol is bad" conclusion.
