For me, I once tried to withdraw about £150 out and half the cash got stuck in the dispenser and then retracted. Never seen that happen before.

I was flying to Germany in two hours and needed the money at the time as I had no debit card. I had to go into the bank and strongly suggest that they reimburse me -which they did after about half an hour.

I got a letter later to confirm I hadn't had my cash out.

People asking for directions when your using one, then get a little irate/tetchy when you don't answer - they must be a bit thick, distracting someone at a CASH point machine expecting their full attention, been asked directions a few times, no chance.

saw one saying free cash withdrawals , but the money wasn't free after all ,they still took it from my account Devil

Was in the queue for one when customer #1 (a woman) left £40 or £60 in the machine. Customer #2 (also a woman) surrepticiously tried to pocket it. Customer #3 (a man) says at the top of his voice, 'I hope that you're going to chase after that woman and give her her money, or I might have to rearrange your face'. Look on #2's face was priceless - called to #1 that she'd forgotten her money, handed it over, then scarpered without getting any cash out herself.

Funnily enough I once left a cashpoint without taking the £50 I'd withdrawn, was busy thinking about all the stuff I had to sort that day and just walked off after getting my card back.  Finally realized something didnt quite feel right about 200 yards down the road, unsurprisingly it had been swiped.

they should have a little voice that says, "please wait for your cash" or something. sure this has happened to a lot of people.

I was the same dontwineasy. Last Christmas I was drawing 250 out to go out for our works party. My mates ex started talking to me and I never noticed half the money had got stuck and retracted and I had only taken 160. I would never have known if the bloke behind me hadn't said there was a message on the screen telling me to contact my bank. As it was a link machine, I had to wait until the next week for it to be emptied, and they could confirm to my bank that they were 110 up. It took about 3 weeks for me to get my money back

Well p1ssed one night Was using one to get a ton out, was waiting for the money when some stupid eastern european idiot tapped me on the shoulder saying i had dropped a pound coin, and i had, went down and picked it up before i could say thanks hed gone - I remember thinking to myself "one born every minute".   I mustve been well p1ssed because the ton never came out the machine for some reason had to put the old PIN in again but got the ton in the end and still i got a free quid, what a result, unfair the reputations some of these Polish get.

I was behind some large foreign bloke at a cashpoint on my high street who appeared to be struggling. When my turn finaly came I saw a wad of notes; I ran after him, tapped him on the shoulder and gave it to him. He didn't even say thanks, just shrugged.
Better one was 1990. While using a cashpoint in central London I looked down and spied a credit card, new, unsigned and for someone working for a Swedish arms company. After a short discussion with my mates it was decided that we would use it to finance our trip to Italia 90. We had some marvellous meals and always tipped very well. In those days the terminals were not electronically linked and once you had a run up a large bill there was no motivation for a restaraunter to check too thouroughly a card that was valid and with a good signature. Finally got rumbled in a sports shop in Milan on our last day but we were on our toes before the Bill arrived. Happy daysGrin

Unders - I refused to leave until they gave me my cash. Felt bad about it afterwards but seem to remember I couldn't finance myself for a few days in Germany without the extra money, so I was livid.

I think it was 250 as well thinking about it and I got l40 or something. Maybe the machine struggles if it has to pay out low denomination larger withdrawals or something.

No, never got cash out with it. Bought the tickets for Germany v Czech and Argentina v Yugoslavia before I found the card. We used to look into the restaraunt to check if they had one of those machines that you manualy run over a slip. Found it about two months before and never used it in the UK. Only used it for meals and drink, only once tried to buy goods and that was a failure.

From my recollection in the late 90's, the few establisments that accepted credit cards in Italy would not accept a credit card unless you had a proof of identification. They even require it nowdays with chip and pin.
Report Catford Toteboard November 13, 2012 9:37 PM GMT
I think you'll find Mr Flea that Italia 90 was held in the very early 90s (the clue is in the name). I'm not surprised they had tightened up credit card processing security by the late nineties and perhaps we played a small part in that. It was surprisingly easy but as I pointed out; once you'e eaten the food and drunk the drink there is little incentive for the retsaraunt management to start questioning your card, particularly if there is a big tip involved. Cards were less common in those days.
Your scepticism is endearing, but misplaced on this occasaion.

I didn't mean the late 90's. That was a mistake on my part. I was living in Italy during the world cup and I know how difficult it was to pay with a credit card in Italy. If anything harder than it is now. I do not believe you because your story has flaws on many levels.

Lets just recap on these on Mr Flea.

Credit Cards tend to advertise where the owner works

As others have verified; it was a company credit card and the name was displayed as per normal.

you can sign the CC, but please tell me how you can get cash out with one, as you got tickets from a bank(?) in cash

you require identification

as I said; we never tried to take cash out with it.

From my recollection in the late 90's, the few establisments that accepted credit cards in Italy would not accept a credit card unless you had a proof of identification. They even require it nowdays with chip and pin

I didn't mean the late 90's. That was a mistake on my part. I was living in Italy during the world cup and I know how difficult it was to pay with a credit card in Italy. If anything harder than it is now. I do not believe you because your story has flaws on many levels.

So actually the many flaws you speak about boil down to your claim that was hard to pay for things in Italy with a credit card in the early 90s, or was it the late 90s,?as opposed to my claim that it wasn’t that hard. You can believe what you want. I was sharing my true “most interesting experience at a cash point” as it was interesting and life forming for me. It gave me a lifetime love of Brunello and Veal Escalope.

You obviously don’t have a trustworthy face Mr Flea, unlike me and my mates, that’s why they always asked you for ID Laugh

By the way, anoraks will have noted that on my fun filled Italia 90 jaunt I didn't see a goal scored in open play but I did witness Maradona missing a penalty.

Dodgy credit cards were very much a part of England trips in the late 80's and 90's especially. When the manual machines were still in use, hotels and restraunts (though you had to be careful in hotels) were easy meat.

I remember scousers on Eng trips with blank cards theyd sorted in uk(when you just needed to sign the strip)buying designer clothes with dodgy cards. You could book train tickets v easily with hooky cards as well in europe. The amount of times you'd see Eng fans in some posh restraunt lording it was v funny as feck.Euro 92 Sweden must of been half financed with dodgy cards.

These were still the days when they had bureau de change machines in railway stations where people would just load em with fake notes and convert then to the local currency. We'd bought £200 of dodgy tenners and were changing them in Milan rail station when the worlds biggest alarm went off on the machinesLaugh
