Welcome to the Ryder Cup competition thread. Everything you need to know to enable you to win a cash prize – Courtesy of Betfair (and the very kind BCM2) is here. Please take your time, entries will be accepted right up to 12 mid-day on Thursday 27th September
This is how the competition works: There are 12 sections, you have to pick 1 player or number (depending on which section) for each one. The scores for each selection are listed below. Just put the letters A to L with your choice for each - preferably going downwards, followed by a tie-break answer (The final score). The people with the highest scores at the end of the event will win as follows: 1st - £130, 2nd - £100, 3rd - £80, 4th - £60, 5th - £50, 6th - £40, and a £40 wooden spoon prize for whoever finishes in Last place. To be paid direct into your BF account. In the event of ties, the tiebreak will be operated, with a ‘nearest to’ format if none are exact (including for last place). If there's still a tie, the prizes will be added and divided equally among those involved in the tie.
This is how the Ryder cup works Day 1 AM - 4 matches (fourballs). Day 1 PM – 4 matches (foursomes) all 2 players in each team in each match. Day 2 – same as day 1. Day 3 – 12 singles matches. Total 28 matches. Each match scores either 1/2 a point (if halved) to each team or 1 point to the winner.
The matches themselves are matchplay rather than strokeplay, and the winners are whoever wins the most individual holes. They are all played over a maximum of 18 holes. Once it becomes impossible to win, for example one team/player is 6 holes in front and there are only 5 holes left to play (ie 6 up after 13 holes), the match ends with a score of 6 & 5.
The Teams
Team USA: Keegan Bradley, Jason Dufner, Jim Furyk, Dustin Johnson, Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Phil Mickelson, Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker, Steve Stricker, Bubba Watson, Tiger Woods.
Team Europe: Nicolas Colsaerts, Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Peter Hanson, Martin Kaymer, Paul Lawrie, Graeme McDowell, Rory McIlroy, Francesco Molinari, Ian Poulter, Justin Rose, Lee Westwood.
THE SECTIONS and some history and information to guide you.
A. Who will partner Sergio Garcia in his 1st match? Choose any other European player. (A ‘you are the captain’ question) 3 points if correct
B.Who will partner Bubba Watson in his 1st match? Choose a USA player. 3 points if correct
C.What will the score be at the end of the 1st day? (the 8 designated matches if there’s a delay). Choose from 8-0 to 0-8, in 1/2 point increments, with THE USA’S SCORE 1st. putting .5 rather than 1/2 is perfectly acceptable. In 2008 the score was 5 1/2 – 2 1/2 (5.5 – 2.5). In 2006 it was 5 – 3 (to Europe, who were the home side). 2010 was a bit messed up due to rain and delays and the format was changed as it went on. 4 points for exact, 2 points if wrong by 1/2 (.5), 1 point if out by 1
D.Who will be leading at the end of Day 2 or will it be a tie? Put USA, Europe or Tie. 1 point if correct
E.How many players – in total, both teams – will score 0 points? This could be assisted by not playing much. In 2010 there were 0, 2008 – 0, 2006 – 1 (Brett Wetterich, remember him?), 2004 – 2 (Perry and Funk [I think I’ve got one of their albums]) 1 point if correct
F.How many players – in total, both teams – will play in 5 matches? In theory there could be 16, it will be less than this. Choose from 0-16. In 2008 there were 2 (both USA), in 2006 – 7, in 2004 – 6 3 points for exact, 1 point if 1 out
G.How many of the 28 matches will be won by at least 4 holes? ie 5&4 or more. In 2010 there were 3, 2008 – 1, 2006 – 2, 2004 – 3 2 points for being right
H.How many of the 28 matches will be halved (tied)? In 2010 there were 5, 2008 – 7, 2006 – 7, 2004 – 3 3 points for exact, 1 point if 1 out
I.Who will be the Top-Scoring wildcard?. The players who were ‘Captain’s picks’ and didn’t qualify by right. Choose from: S. Stricker, I. Poulter, J. Furyk, N. Colsaerts, D. Johnson, B. Snedeker 3 points if right
J.How many points will Tiger Woods score? Choose from 0 to 5, in 1/2 point increments. 3 points for exact, 1 point if out by 1/2 (.5)
K.Who will tee off FIRST for Europe in the Singles? (Day 3. Another “You are the captain” question). Choose from the list in ‘Team Europe’ above. 3 points if correct
L.Who will be chosen to Tee off LAST for the USA? The final match. Choose from the ‘Team USA’ list. 3 points if correct
TiebreakWhat will be the final score? USA Score 1st please. The range is 0-28 to 28-0 In 2010 it was 14.5 – 13.5, 2008 was 16.5 – 11.5, 2006 and 2004 were both 18.5 – 9.5
Other stuff E&OE - Any ties in any sections, points shared; (eg, if the score is 2 points for 2nd, 1 point for 3rd, and there's a tie for 2nd, both will score 1.5) If there’s any doubt about a selection for a section, the score will be ZERO for that section regardless of the intention (eg choosing Johnson rather than Z. or D. Johnson). The organiser's (that's me) decision is final. I'll try to update scores and standings at the end of each day's play. Entries accepted until 12.00 Midday, Thursday 27th September. The thread will be locked and no entries taken after this time. In order to win, you MUST have a funded, operational, Betfair account. Only one entry per person. Any ridiculous entries designed to finish last will be ignored and not be included in the competition. Good Luck everybody and enjoy the golf.
