Obviously if you've backed a winner or two it's nice to have some expensive stilton or extra mature cheddar, but when you're on a losing run but have to have proper block cheese who is the cheapest. 400g of Tesco Creamfields Mild Cheddar comes in at £4.98/kg but if anyone knows of cheaper then I'd be grateful for the information.
Tesco's are definitely up there when it comes to cheap cheese but those cheap blocks are full of crap mate. Try melting some of it, its like plastic and full of bad fats. Win or lose, you are better paying just a bit more and getting a good cheese.

I'll have to try that sometime gawdalmighty, meaning melting some very slowly to see if the fats separate into layers. Then cut it with some candle wax, add a wick, and see if it will burn. You can't beat a bit if kitchen chemistry when you don't have a wife to explain to.

Good shout Roquebrune the 800g of Aldi mild cheddar comes in at £4.86/kg. Tesco's can consider themselves relegated. According to their web-site: 'We all love cheese. Or at least that's how it seems, with 99% of households regularly buying it.' Wow.

I like the idea of the cheese-scented candles, bongo. As you aren't married, have you ever considered inviting some friends around for a mouse party? You could use them to get the atmosphere going.

Cheap cheese is cheap cheese but it is still cheese. It's the law.

Iceland used to do some weird cheese subsititute years back, but I don't think they do any more. Whatever BV's hallucinations, it's all cheese!

Anyone classing the catering grade garbage that comes on blocks mainly from ireland as "cheese"would probs also class smart price vodka" as "vodka"while tecnically they are what they say each bears little relation to its true namesake then again in the land of the pot noodle the chit chatter reigns supreme

Life is too short for cheap "plastic" cheese, Bongo. Pay a bit extra or go without. My dog (who will eat ANYTHING) even snubs her nose up at that stuff. As you so rightly said, tis only good for kitchen chemistry
I find it soooo nice and refreshing how any subject can be posted in Chit Chat and carefully thought out responses are given....or is that just me being cheesy?

I was always under the impression a block of cheese was a block of cheese. Even a cheapy block isn't reformed is it? I know that those cheap 10 slices for 99p are reformed but you can't have a reformed block of cheese.

That works out at £7.13/kg Pokermonster so doesn't compete with Roquebrune's and Bert06's Aldi for cheap 100% cheesiness. On the other hand the really mature cheddars have really extended sell-by-dates so if you were buying a really massive block it might work out cheaper in the long term as it wouldn't be wasted. There was a newsfeed article recently about some 28+ year old Wisconsin cheddar that was still tasty.

Price news - ALDI do 'Everyday Essentials Mature Cheddar' for £3.99 for 836g. Translating that, it means mature cheddar for £4.77 per kg, which is a tiny bit cheaper than 9 months ago.
Also being promoted is 'British Extra Mature Cheddar' at £5.40 per kg.
How do the producers of this stuff make a living? Water bills up 2-3%, inflation in other things, I expect vets haven't reduced their charges any, so somebody in the cheese supply chain is being squeezed at these prices if they've reduced a fraction. Great for consumers though.

I think someone was once selling 1KG of cheese for 10p but it was a few years back.
Good luck with your cheese.
Good evening Bongo.I hope you enjoyed the Irish derby.I think someone was once selling 1KG of cheese for 10p but it was a few years back.Good luck with your cheese.
superb quality - most of the stuff at Tesco i wouldn't give to the dog ,although Pilgrims isn't too bad imo
Aldi's specially selected is also decent ,under £3 for a 400g block
Best quality/price ratio imo Waitrose Colliers £3.00 (350g?)superb quality - most of the stuff at Tesco i wouldn't give to the dog ,although Pilgrims isn't too bad imo Aldi's specially selected is also decent ,under £3 for a 400g block
Thank you for the kind words Evgeny, and I hope you're feeling good and your hands are well looked after.
I love to speculate on the future and wonder if one day some tattoo or piercing artist will insert a set of studs on the outside of a man's hands so he can grate cheese against it. That way, you won't have to wash your grater afterwards, just wash your hands instead, which you should do frequently anyway if preparing food. Saves a few seconds.

Aldi still doing extra mature cheddar for less than the price of 4 years ago
. https://www.aldi.co.uk/scottish-extra-mature-cheddar/p/058552012873700 £4.54/kg Who says the cost of living is going up? Obviously the non-cheese eating public sector unions, but apart from them, who else is saying the cost of living is going up.

there was a sign up in a quality art store - selling brushes. - there is nothing that can't be made cheaper -
If you want a paint brush that leaves the hairs on the wall as you paint it'll be three for a pound in the poundshop.
If you want a brush that won't do that it'll be a fiver or tenner.
Same with cheese. Can your stomach afford it?

Surprised the BBC/EULuv Channel haven't run a horrifying story yet, blaming a 4.1% rise in cheese prices on Brexit..
That's because the headlines were about butter and cream but cheese is in the same supermarket aisle.
