Obviously we never really know how long we're going to live , but once you're nearing retirement age what good is owning a house , having huge savings , investments etc ?
I'd rather spend the lot before then & live off benefits as long as i have a few quid to live off & enjoy myself still
The whole pension / work hard for your retirement is a scam imo Plain

Most people have kids and want to leave an inheritance.  I told my dad to just blow the money, go business class on holiday, fillet steak, 5 star hotels etc.  of course he won't so I will have a nice inheritance .... Split five ways, taxed, inflated away etc.

This is a very interesting mathematical that I am pondering at the moment. One needs to maximise the utility gained from ones money, but with the uncertanities of how much you will make and how long you will live. I don't have a solution yes, but you need to factor in happiness gained from giving kids inheritence. Ignoring that, you should aim to die with nothing.

Interesting,my old mans in his eighties, house paid for, reasonable savings.Lives on his pension but continually complains that he cant afford things yet puts £50 a week into a savings a/c,it drives me crazy, i can only assume that some people get pleasure from looking at numbers in a bank book.

it sounds to me  that he feels safer living like this Barrowboy
which is understandable , if he has a wife etc to think of ..
and as he's always saved & been careful he subconciously thinks this is his only way ..
though in reality he could sell his house & rent a place whilst enjoying the rest of his life more comfortably with the odd holiday etc ?

I s'pose at 80 you just want to feel security , but is still a slightly false one i feel

he lives alone MC, funny thing is when my mum died for about 2 weeks he said he was going to live for the day give money to grandkids etc, but he never did & has just reverted to type.

I just feel that if he spent all his money say in his 60's he could claim housing benefits anyway .. though a lot nicer retiring in his own house , for sure .

as Pumkinslayer says above there are a lot of mathematic variables , and everybody's circumstances will be slightly different too

sorry diddn't see your 14.08 post
that's a shame for him then , but as you say living for the day is what he should be doing
I think many old people get very self occupied and live like this out of fear (no offence) more than anything , as you say he moans about stuff that he could probably buy 100 of !

Personally, I'm considering keeping myself reasonably fit and healthy until I hit about 65, and then throwing caution to the wind and hurling myself into a big orgy of booze, drugs, (and realistically, by then) wh0res and Viagra. 5 years of that sounds better than 20 years of slowly advancing decrepitude, plus that way I don't have to worry about a pension.

I guess I may have changed my mind by then, though.
