I'm reading the local rag and in it there are 2 cases of totally unprovoked attacks on individuals who were badly injured.
one of them spent a week in hospital and had serious head injuries the doctors were gravely concerned about but happily he pulled through and has, to some extent, recovered.
in the other case the guy had a broken jaw & 2 fractured ribs after 4 guys attacked him in what the judge referred to as "recreational violence." witnesses said they were kicking his prostrate body & taking turns in jumping up and down on him.
in both cases the defence claimed their clients remembered little of the incident as they had been drinking heavily.
imo this should no longer even be allowed to be mentioned let alone used as some sort of mitigating factor.
can you guess how much jail time was handed out???

I can say this now.
If someone carried out an act of violence of a friend or loved one of mine and didn't serve time I'd follow them home one night and hit them so hard with an iron bar they'd never walk again.
I know thats wrong but thats how I feel.

It makes me mad to think how these animals behave.
And then they dont even serve a setence.
It's an absolute disgrace.
I hope the judge has to see his son beaten to a pulp by one of these yobs.
He might get a grip on reality then.

yep zero, suspended sentences, community service & fines they can't pay anyway.
very depressing although procurator fiscal (scottish equivalent of cps) is appealing the first one which is just mind bending how they avoided jail.
no serious previous as it it seems you can beat the sh1t out of someone fairly safely.

What i find weird about alcohol is the fact it is legal to go out a get absolutely drunk to the point you can't remember what you are doing and heinous crimes like the one above are committed.Most of the people in prison are there due to drink related incidents i think it is about 70% or so(correct me if i am wrong).Despite all this alcohol is legal.I think it is just wrong that people should be allowed to get in such a state even though it is difficult to monitor but i'm sure if alcohol was invented tomorrow it would be illegal and put in the same basket as drugs. I still find it difficult to understand why cannabis is illegal but alcohol is legal despite all the lives drink ruins.
assuming this was handled in a magistrates court, it's unlikely that the magistrate chose to pass a light sentence.
the sentencing guidelines tend to be pretty inflexible.
whilst drink was used as a defence, i doubt it was considered to be mitigating.
i'm not justifying the sentences, but i doubt the magistrate was to blame.

eeyore: i'm afraid that kind of rational approach to substance abuse and the health dangers and social toxicity of different substances gets you sacked.
How can you say cannabis is worse than alcohol when about 70% of the prison population are in there for drink related crimes. Cannabis chills people out and doesn't turn you into dangerous criminal unlike alcohol can and does to many people

They should do a trial in a city centre where they have one Saturday night with a complete ban on alcohol and see what happens.
mass protests from publicans, night club owners and kebab shop owners.
maybe they should have breathalysers for people going out on the razz I.E 4 pints max or something

Eeeyore your argument is flawed,why dont you compare 1000 alcohol users against 1000 drug users and you will get a better picture of which substances cause more harm.

binge drinking guidelines do little to help in that many of us can exceed the rather puritanical guidelines and still remain in adequate control so as not to be a nuisance or a danger to ourselves or others.

madvlad i'm talking about cannabis not heroine and crack etc .I agree that these types are drugs are totally bad.There is a big difference between the class A and Class B hth
^ You need to read up on cannabis and the path users take imo.
Not all cannabis users go onto to try harder drugs in fact in most druggy circles shun smackheads and the like and do not want to be associated with them.It's a bit like a fella going to the pub who wants a couple of pints not wanting to hang out with a down and out on a park bench drinking drinking special brew etc..
It is a known fact that drink ruins lives and kills people not to mention all the misery it causes where as cannabis is not like this and is far less of a problem than alcohol misuse hth
so if you think cannabis users are worse than alcohol users how come 70% of the prison population is in there for alcohol related crime and not cannabis users?Not to mention all the other problems with alcohol related illnesses

I'm not too sure, Doo Wah. There's a hell of a lot of aggresion and violence in them there moslem (non-drinking) communities all over the world.

I remember my Nan giving my brothers a little bit of Mackeson in their bottles to get them to sleep. I like that Do Wah a Taxi driver with a drink problem, the only reason i use Taxi's is so not to drink and drive.

Bonvivvy i think we have crossed wires here.I'm not saying ignore all the other offences all i am saying is that most probably even all those crimes you are listing (drug offences? noncing?burgulars?gang related?)A large amount (60%/70%) were most probably committed under the influence of alcohol ,thats all i mean by it.HTH

No probs Bonvivvy sorry for the misunderstanding, all i was meaning was that lots more crime in general including the crimes you stated happen when people have had a drink taken and might not have happened if they were not drunk(been drinking) .I think that is a fair assesment and that is my point.All the best fella no hard feelings and have a good day
