Hi, i recently installed a bird nest box with an integrated camera, after checking on wednesday i saw 3 eggs amongst a messy made nest. I think the previous time i checked prior to this was on the monday and nothing was there. Since i realised eggs were present i have been checking numerous times each day. However no birds have been there since. Everything is exactly as it was wednesday. Does this mean the bird in question has abondened its eggs? Or is this normal? Thanks in advance Details if required are as follows. Nest roughly 3 metres high on wall of house, hole is 22mm, sw facing,
Its a black and white camera, eggs are very pale, whitish looking. How long should i give it before i clear the nest? I was thinking blue/great tit, cant think what must have spooked it. Shame

not 100% sure but I think they usually only lay 1 or 2 eggs a day and start incubating when the clutch is complete.....check tomorrow if there are any more eggs

you should make sure there's no easy way for cats to get remotely near the nest. 3 metres is too high from ground level but a nearby wall or anything to jump from for leverage would make it too dangerous for the poor birdies.

Only this afternoon I watched the blue tit box in my neighbour’s garden while a cat sat on my fence post and tried to grab the adult as it emerged from the box. Having fallen on its arse it then found its way onto the roof of the shed and sat on the box for 20 minutes trying to claw its way into the box, or waiting for something to emerge. In the end it gave up and within 10 - 15 minutes the adult was back on the job.
While a cat is possibly responsible, if the nest box is out of reach of a cat a sparrowhawk is perhaps more likely.

Firstly, thanks for all the (sensible) replies. Just to let you know, i have checked again today, saturday, and the eggs have actually been moved around :) Just seem to be unlucky as i have not actually witnessed the bird going into the nest box once. Nice to know that all is not lost however. Must just be waiting for a bigger clutch of eggs before she starts to nest.

He only told me because on sunday i saw a bird go in there and managed to film it for about 15secs. All it did was peck at an egg and fly back out. When i showed him the video he owned up, knowing full well this same bird must have been eyeing up the nest since wednesday at least, as she had been moving the "eggs" around. C**T
