yes, i was doing mid 80's but my heyday was the 70's at the likes of Cinderellas/Rockerfellas with Pete Stringfellow as dj.
The crumpet in there had to be seen to be believed. Incredible nightclub. |

Hey kenny, please forgive my impudence but are you old enough to remember when
"The Merrion Centre" was built? What a brilliant facility at the time! My office was in Woodhouse Square and I would be regularly treated to lunch at "The Skanda Grill" which was a Greek restaurant. The big problem was that the buildings all had masses of glazing and it was quite masochistic eating Moussaka, in stifling summer heat (air conditioning hadn't been thought of back then! If we were slumming it we would go to "The General Wade" aka The Tardis) for a Ploughmans, or we would go to an adjacent Bierkeller where you could get a pint of lager, Cornish Pasty & chips, and be sexually aroused for less than £2.00. The bowling alley was a first for the area, and with "Cinderellas" opposite what more could one want? Happy, simple and optimistic days back then! |

hi aunty, i would guess Merrion Centre was buit around '65 as it was almost brand new when we used the Bowling alley immediately behind it circa '66 when I was 17.
Don't recall a CW upstairs in the MC. I spent a lot of time in the Mecca though. I seem to recall there was a Bali Hai club on the Mecca level. I remember the General Wade well (is it still there) and the Bier Keller nearby with the awful OOmpah bands which nevertheless was very popular till its time was up. |

Nice of you for the invite but i am going on holiday to Egypt for two weeks tomorrow,and have plenty of things still to do. Aunty Post At my place of work i look out over the Merrion Centre and i tell you with the refurbished plan nearly finished it has the feel of a proper shopping Mall (just addeed a KFC and Corals aswell  )I had my weedding reception in the Merrion Hotel (25 years next week) and a big drinking bash in the General Wade the night before |

Interesting that the whole world was in B&W back then! Very difficult to explain to young folks that we couldn't see any colour! This place was brand spanking new when I got my '66 Cortina GT, and took my new job, just a couple of 100yards or so round the corner! "The Cygani" night club was actually at the Arndale Centre Headingley, at the left end of the building when facing it. It was always a mystery how two spacious lounge areas plus the bars and toilets etc were shoe horned into The General Wade! |

Gillinson Barnett (architects) were just around the far side of the development,
and at the time I did a fair bit of freelance visualising and model making for them. Like I said before "happy, sunny, youthful and optimistic days"! What the hell went wrong? |

The General Wade was astonishing. It was the original "Tardis".
We often went there for a "Ploughmans" for lunch. Also right next to it was a "Bierkeller" type place where you could get a pint plus some meat pie and chips and the strippers (this is lunch time remember) for about £1.00 or so. "The Skanda Grill" was fab and they did an excellent Moussaka. The problem was the intense heat due to the fact that the place was all windows, in typical 60s style. "The Cyganny" was a good place to end the night. We would sit in the downstairs bar for a couple of pints of Camerons till maybe 22:30and, then go upstairs to the review bar for chicken/scampi in the basket and the cheeky girly show that kicked off at 23:00 if I remember correctly. |

 I went in the Gen Wade regularly and popped in the Bierkeller a few times but drinking from steins and jumping on the table to ridiculous songs was not really my scene. There was The Little Londoner around the corner that we used to pop in quite regularly (for 6 months or so) but Cinderellas was where we always ended up at the weekend. I distinctly remember having to pay £4 to get in around 1973. Very classy joint though. I didn't ever go to The Cyganny or Cygani as micky spelled it, but a pal was a regular. It was run by a Hungarian chap if memory serves. |

I was in the Pig and Whistle regularly about the same time. Smart pub, decent crumpet. Remember putting Dreadlock Holiday on the jukebox so that would be '78.
