three titles which pushed the hardware to its absolute limits but still provide exceptionally good, playable games. there was a lot of stuff released in its last few years that was hugely over ambitious and massively disappointing.

I got to level 16 on Manic Miner - wasted much of my life when I was 15.
Elite and Jet Set Willy was another that wasted many hours.
I also liked 3D Ant Attack, I think it was the first game I ever completed.
I started into programming machine code but left the computer scene when I discovered females which were much more fun to play with. Really wish I'd have stuck to it. I've since tried to learn to program on C+ and Android but can't really get into it.
I bought the newer version of the ZX Spectrum in the early 90's for nostalgia but it just wasn't the same as when I was 15. I moved onto the Amiga and then a Pentium 90 with a massive 40MB hard drive. I think the processor in my phone has now more power than these

True story - We actually won the Pools in the mid 80's thanks to a Pools Prediction Program that was doing the rounds. You had to manually update every football result every week and the computer would spit out the 8 results that were most likely to draw. After 4 weeks I got fed up and stopped updating it but my dad kept the same numbers and 3 weeks later we hit £1,500

Oh the days of being able to buy your new computer games in the newsagents. Market stalls filled with racks of tapes at a nicker each and games where you feel like you have won just because you got it to load.
I used to love the football manager games on spectrum. Nice and simple. I still play FM on PC occasionally, but's it so damn complicated and in depth now.

Better yet were the C90 tapes going round school with about 30 games on, admittedly only about 4 or 5 ever worked, but still remember being amazed with Frank Bruno's Boxing.
There was a pop band manager game which I've tried to track down, I was obsessed with it. You started out busking then progressed to bigger venues and bought status symbols etc. It was all just text and very simple but I loved it, it always seemed to randomly end with your band splitting up for no reason no matter how 'happy' they were

that game was called The Biz and you can still play it if you go to a site called the world of spectrum. You will find emulators to download plus the game.

One game which nearly drove me crazy at that time is Underwurlde. I tried hard to finish it but never succeeded. Painful failure

Burton, hmmm... seems very similar but not sure that's the actual one
I never got close to finishing any speccy game, remember buying Rambo for £8.50, so excited and couldn't get past the first level I don't think I finished a game till I played the SNES generation consoles.

The good thing about the ZX81 was there was feck all else to do with it bar learn to program. Our school had one and I had to teach our teacher to program. I saved and paid for the ZX81 out of my pocket money, I think it cost me £40.

I more or less continued, had Atari ST, Nintendo 64, PS2 and now PS3, but i can't play now, it's really too time consuming and i have more important things to do

That looks more like it but I remember the charts always had DR Hook, so I think it used real names and I think you played as if you were in the band rather than being a manager. Also you had to busk before getting a proper gig.
My Spectrum + was £125 from Dixons in 1985 ish, computer, tape recorder and games including Chequered Flag, Chess and this . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_Horizons_Survival

It took 10 mins to draw each scene, couldn't understand the words you typed but it was revolutionary. I never got very far in it but you can find solutions on the net and it wasn't that hard to complete when you knew what words to use.

I remember everyone got stuck in The Hobbit at a bit where you had to climb inside a barrel and go down a waterfall or something, but you had to get the exact wording to get into the bloody barrel.

Oh yes time does fly! 39 so yeah your right about the age...most friends at the time had a Spectrum and yeah they were good but the Commodore 64 was much better, and the sound/music etc was amazing at the time...some arcade conversions like Commando and Hyper Sports were nearly identical. Yeah im bored of games nowadays too in depth and nearly all first person shooters...

I had an Amstrad CPC464 (with colour monitor of course!)
I loved Manic Miner, Football Director (miles better than FM), Ghouls, Steve Davis snooker, Test match cricket, & the ultimate...........CLASSIC RACING. Used to have a stable of horses and try and get the most prize money. Many a time pocket money won or lost v my brother. That was the slippery slope for us........!!!!
Any Amstrad games online anywhere?
P.S The Grand National game used to take forever to complete, with no pictures and only horses name moving up & down the field before falling some 38 minutes into the race

p.s have an x box and a WI now, had a PS3 b4 that but never play them really as can't be bothered. Gaming was much better back in the halcyon days of wide eyed wonderment!!
The last game I really played to death was Championship Manger on the PC the first few seasons - it consumed my life for a while. Also PGA Tour Golf 2 on the Mega Drive was a time quencher. Used to play for skins for real £ v anyone who would take me on. I was mustard

Sometimes when I trawl through ebay ads and see some of the old computers up for a tenner, I think about buying them just for the crack and maybe even to store, in case they become vintage one day.

^^^^ I got banned for life from a John Menzies at age 13 for doing the above but putting
"Tutey Is A Bastard" on the 3 computer screens on display which then scrolled down the screen, manager grabbed me by the collar and said he was ringing the police lol. (Tutey = my friends name)

The evolution of that was to then use the 1 line of the dreaded machine code which mimicked the Spectrum loading screen
10 print "Jet Set Willy 2 is loading" 20 'that code thats bugging me now'
Then watch some poor sap in Smiths stand watching the screen waiting in anticipation for ages

Colonization New Zealand Story Desert Strike series Arkanoid some boxing coach game that I can't remember the name of - the fitness coach was called Jim in the Gym though assorted 90s Championship Managers
I used 2000 as my cutoff point for 'retro'. Two games from that year that would have made the final had I included it are The Sims and Europa Universalis. The later in particular is quite impressive in that the last 30 pages or so of the manual alone provide a better precis of European history between 1492-1792 than the national curriculum.

Those were the days, a new game on the shelves, enticing cover, screen shots look good too, £8.99 RRP but never mind, dash home and wait 5 minutes for it to load in...only to find it is absolutely shyte and the screen shots were from the coin op arcade version.
