Wade, 27, admits his game has been affected by problems in his personal life, including a heartbreaking split from Soccer AM girlfriend Helen Chamberlain earlier this year.

He said: “I’ve had a terrible few months, probably the toughest of my life and I’ve still not sorted out my personal life even now.

“Helen and I were going through our split at the start of the year and my game went to pieces. I didn’t win any of my opening five Premier League matches and I’d criticism flying at me from all angles.

“It wasn’t a nice feeling. I’m not superhuman, I am quite emotional and personal problems have a huge influence on my darts.

“At times I’d rather have been anywhere than in front of 10,000 fans and live on Sky Sports.”

JAMES WADE has revealed the personal torment that almost made him quit — and how he dreams of giving up 501 for FORMULA ONE.

The World No 3, who faces Andy Smith in his opening World Matchplay clash on Saturday, is currently Phil Taylor’s biggest threat on the oche with four major titles in the last three years, racking up £250,000 in prize money.

The former mechanic got away from it all to spend a day with the Force India F1 team at Silverstone last week.

He said: “I’d give up darts tomorrow to be an F1 driver. Cars were my first love — not so much driving, but the mechanics of cars. I’m aiming to get a few track days in soon to help me let off some steam.

“I’d be a very late starter to get a drive in F1 but who cares? Maybe I could try and be the first sportsman to be world champion in cars and darts. Not even Phil Taylor has done that!”

I think Bill Werbeniuk was the only other professional sportsman to succesfully make the transition from the top of his profession to F1 but he was a Snooker player.....Good luck James....keep the dream alive.
