We thought we were super cool, sitting on the bar stools at the counter, and drinking
Coca Cola out of ice cold glass bottles.

The burgers were excellent, cooked to order, and always served in a toasted bun.

No poncey salad and bun soaking sauces (at least not for me).

Very foward thinking offering a Bender Brunch imo.

The Wimpy Bar was a burger style version of Berni Inns Steak Bars
and Prawn Cocktail starters.

Remember there was a Wimpy Bar in Newmarket High St, maybe still there (?)

There was one in Henley up until recently, poshest place in the world. Now I think it's a BettFred.

As far as I can remember the Wimpy Bar was the first concept of fast food.
But now McDonald’s and Burger King have done it better and bigger.

I passed this on my travels the other week. I had to do a double take...I can confirm they are still going.

I really don't know why the took the competition lying down.
They had a really good product and they should still be on the High St today.

There is still one going in Doncaster.

Still one in Birkenhead too, been there for donkey's years. Never been in it though; don't like the look of it.

I miss burger king, the only burger king in Sheffield town centre is in the train station and they stick a couple of quid extra on everything While mcds and a shocking kfc both super busy

Wimpy are in a funny market place  -

they sell burgers which is a poor man's food ,but the poor man goes to McDonald's

Often used to go to the Wimpy in Henley with my mates from sixth form college and the number of times people did a runner without paying just when we were in. Must have cost them a fair few quid by the end of the year.

Wimpy were great in their classic early 80′s heyday.

There's one a few mins walk away from me in Welling, SE London. Also one in Bexleyheath, so I have a choice of Wimpy's.

I had a Wimpy and chips in Southend last Sunday.I think  they taste more or less just as they did in the sixties.Mc D came with all the fanfare of American authenticity but with a second rate product.Wimpy was always better.Its a mystery why they caved in so easily.

I remember Wimpy Bars being at their best in the vwery early sixties. I used to work part=time on Saturdays in Caters supermarket(anyone remember them ), and i spent all my hard-earned wages at the Wimpy Bar in Bromley,Kent.

Every time it was egg,bacon and chips followed by strawberry flan and cream.

The one in Mansfield has a outside seating area, on a nice day sit out there in the sunshine and watch the people filing into mcdonalds .

Why would you go to wimpy when virtually every pub will do a decent burger and chips these days for about the same price.

In the sixties, seventies and to a lesser extent the eighties, pubs didn't do food, so places like wimpy and greasy spoons were where you went for cheap grub. Different now.  Some pubs do brilliant burgers now.  Two for nine quid in the pub near work.  Can't recall ever eating at wimpy, is the quality that good?

Maybe they should have moved and changed with the times,
like when MacDonalds came along perhaps they should have dropped
waitress service and cutlery.  But they should have been able to
keep up with the changes in the fast food market. They had a good product.

No-one in their right mind could say that Wimpy is not better quality than that crap, but like you say your get a better quality burger in most pubs these days.
Thing is how many macdonald outfits are there, Wimpy is better quality  but for whatever reason they struggle to get a foot in the door, the great british public get what they deserve imo, at the end of the day they just love the sh!t that is called macdonalds.

International Grill, Cola float and a Brown Derby, I took one of my first girlfriends to the Wimpy bar in Streatham High Road and treated her to exactly that. I so very nearly got to third base on the bus home.

It's pretty clear from some of the anti-Wimpy comments on this thread that certain ChitChatters may lack experience in how to please a woman.

Ahh , the Southend Wimpy  was my first ever followed by the one next to Chelmsford rail station -i'll have to see if its still there .

Have to say, I had my last Wimpy (and my first since a child) about three years ago (services on the M5 somewhere near Bristol?) and I will not be going back.  Even compared to McDonalds it was shockingly poor. 

Genuinely amazed to see people raving about them on here....

Pumpy,  I am not comparing wimpy to mcdonalds.  How much is a burger, chips and a drink in wimpy?  I am guessing that is why they lost to mcdonalds.  Pubs took up the slack.

there's a hamburger joint around the bend where the meals thank god are skimpy,

Our local Litle Chef was one of the better ones imo.

The one just outside Ely is nice as well.

Our one was recently closed down in their redundancies/cutbacks.

one of the few things i dislike about England is the food out when you visit random pubs and restaraunts ,and i won't be paying £50 for a dinner either  .

It's almost always awful .

if the weather is 5/10  then the food has to be  -5/10 

Visitors from civilised countries should be warned .

We're such a nation of cheapskates,that nearly every pub chain and indy pubs as well concentrate JUST on price and "value" which usually means all this "2 meals for a tenner" muck,couple that with portion control and inevitable low to average food and staff it all adds up to a very very mediocre british dining experience when on the hoof.

It's a shame as when our food is done well it's fantastic hearty stuff.

It would be a goodnargument if wimpy was the best burger eating experieence going.

Not had a Wimpy for a few yrs Dylan,in fact somewhere kinda southish London i think.However while they were a "decent" burger (for the time)i'd rate them (rose tinted glasses off) as about a smidgeon better than a mc d's quarter pounder yet not quite as good as a BK Whopper(whcih as burgers go is probs about the best in fairness)

Essentially they were Milk Bars doing lunches,teas etc milkshakes,puddings and the rest of it,waitress service etc but with more an emphasis on burgers.chips as the meal options.Simply swallowed by time and modern competition and also were subject of all sorts of corporate chopping and changing due to their prime locations.

Defo better than a "cheapo" pub burger,mayeb a shade better than a spoons burger too,but we aint talking come chuck beef american diner beauty by a feckng long way

anyone remember a burger chain called the canadian charcoal pit.

used to be one nr manchester (a charcoal pit) they used to do kinda charcoal sirloin steaks and the like with chips very tasty actually think they did eat in and take out,i think kebab houses saw em off.

small world BV, went out with a girl who worked there, the odd free meal was useful at the time, would have brought one to the hospital if id known you were stuck in the there.

The ones in Welling and Bexleyheath are ok, as a kid I remember bender in a bun being on the menu, used to get a wallop of my old dear for asking the waiter if he had tried it
