Since the 2006/7 season, before every Sheff U match, I have backed a fiver on Sheff U ht/ Opposition Ft. I put my bet up as soon as possible, just a tick under the lowest 'LAY' price, and if its still not matched by match day, will just back at whatever odds are available.

The bet has only been a winner twice in those 5 years (Norwich A last season & yesterday at home to Oldham)

3 times in those five years I have forgotten to get the bet matched before kick-off.

Once I saved myself a fiver (Charlton H 2 years ago).

One match was the Norwich game - but having got home I found £3 had been matched - was still pissed off with myself

And yesterday nothing was matched (anyone know what sort of price I could have expected to get the bet matched at around 1pm?)

Still seething now...

Anyone got any sob stories of their own?

remember many years ago putting a 15 timer on the 2 balls in the final round of a major, somewhere between £20 and £40 just for fun, but remember the potential win was 20k

First couple won then third one lost (had furyk to beat sutton and he lost by 1 shot i think)

Checked the results just for a laugh the next day and found out all the other ****s had won

gambled on a range of things and got up to £500 12 hours later and stuck it on a 0-0 correct score premiership game @ 9/1, just before having a tug and going to bed. goal was scored in the first minute.

As an Oldham fan I am still struggling to see how with a stack of injuries , a scoring drought , no away wins since September & up against a club in 3rd place how on earth we came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at their manor.

Safe to say the odds on SU / Oldham ht/ft must have been very tasty , unlucky .

i backed st helens yesterday at match odds they lost by a point 17-16.
However on seeing the highlights on sky Brough the Huddersfield kicker attempted to kick a conversion, the ball hit the upright cannoned across the goal , hit the other upright bounced down onto the crossbar and dropped over the bar scoring 2 points to kill the bet.
I would wager my house and every penny ive got that , that is the first time in history that a rugby ball in either code since the game has been invented has hit all 3 bars on a rugby post and scored a goal.It wasnt a million to one it was a trillion to one...cost me 1200.

Maybe not a 'sob story',but a great 'what if ' for me.

Prior to his first outing in his first year out of novice chases I placed £50 at 50/1 on Barton Bank to win the Gold Cup.He then went on to win the Charlie Hall,an intermediate chase at Sandown and the King George, from 3 races.

The bet was placed on a credit account and in order to reinstate my credit I sent the bookmaker a cheque. They asked me which bets I wanted the money credited against so I said that of Barton Bank and some others. This was in February when the horse was priced at about 6/1 for the Gold Cup.Anyway,I was surprised to receive an ante-post voucher stating that I had a further £50 at 50/1.I thought,'that's interesting, let's see what happens'.

The horse didn't run after the King George and one week before Cheltenham, when best priced at 5/1,burst a blood vessel  and so missed the race.

I subsequently received a statement claiming that I'd had two losing £50 bets at 50/1.I got this corrected, quite readily but had the horse won the race I would have been paid 100/1 on a 5/1 shot.Sad

As a pup too young to gain access to the bookies, I used to hang around outside our local office and get the regulars to put my bets on for me. It's Oaks day and I've been thru the race and can't see anything beating All At Sea, but at even money, there's not a lot of point for my 5 quid paper round money, so I decide to have £2-50 e/w on User Friendly. I'm sitting outside waiting for a familiar face when a £20 comes wafting out of the door. I put my foot on it and wait the requisite amount of time for someone to come rushing out to claim it (a period best measured by the boffins/imbeciles at CERN.... Devil).
With no takers, I trouser it and moments later a familiar face comes by. I fully intended sticking with my original bet, but for some reason the words, "Will you stick us £25 on All At Sea?" came tumbling out.
The rest is obvious..........
Like anyone else I've got hard luck stories galore to relate since, but that one has always stuck. My first taste of what was to come.

I backed 17 losers in a row at my local dog track Catford in the mid 80's. At least three were odds on and my very own dog won at 7/1 during that run and I never had a shekel on him.

Nobody believed me and thought I had landed an off course coup by making it known in the ring I was backing the trainers other one in the race to bang out the price but I truthfully never had a bean on mine. What a sickening night that wasSad

2006 FA Cup final (West Ham v Liverpool) and I had put a correct score bet on.  A month before, the Hammers had beaten Arsenal 3-2 at the last game played at Highbury (the one where Sol Campbell walked out at half time), so I decided to back that exact same score in the cup final at 95's on here.

90 minutes up, and the score is 3-2 to West Ham.  Then Gerrard hits that 30 yard volley in the 93rd minute to take it into extra time.

And I'm a West Ham fan.  Was not happy that evening.

The night before the 1996 Scottish Cup Final I had a dream that the final score was 4-1,except that I didn't know who won,so on Saturday morning I had £10 on Hearts at 200/1 and £10 on the Huns at 33/1, on that correct score.

With the Huns leading 3-0,Hearts got a goal back about 20 minutes into the second half and I thought 'OK,we're being trashed, but I've got a chance for +£320'.With 10 minutes remaining the Huns made it 4-1.Those remaining minutes lasted an eternity but with several minutes still to play the Huns scored again.CryCryCry

Had we won I would have gone to Edinburgh for the celebrations but instead went to an evening meeting at Hamilton(about 20 minutes drive from Hampden).Didn't bet a single winner.CryCryCry

Man city cost me either nearly 7 grand or 5 grand, depends how you look at it. Had a fiver 10+ timer, cant remember how many in total. This was when Man city won the second tier league with 100+ points, the match was either a Friday night or a Sunday and they lost 1-0 in the last minute, all the others won on the Saturday, man city were at home about 1/3, now i never spread accas over 2-3 days.
