Jimmy-When you go to Hexham make sure it's a good weather forecast.It's the bonniest track in the country on a fine day but it's the worst spot there is when the weather turns.

You lot that live in Sussex are spoilt for choice for tracks that are easy to get to, plus Hove dogs on the coast as well. Goodwood is a magnificent racecourse, I love that place.

goodwood will not let you leave the bar area and go outside with any alcohol..lord march is the only p1llock in the country that does this

pretty sure the bar I go in at newmarket you can't take your beer out onto the terraces, have to leave it at your table .

Sheffield Dogs is the nearest, Doncaster about 15 miles is closest for the horses.

redbag, last time I went to Goodwood (last summer) you could take your drinks with you to quite a few places. We bought our drinks at that glass building between the bandstand and the paddock and took them to one of the stand on the right. No problems.

Sussex is a great location. I am 10 miles north of Brighton, < 1 hours drive from 7 racecourses (plus poss. Kempton - never timed it).  Plumpton (6 miles)and Goodwood are my favourites.

The natural shape and surroundings make Goodwood and Cheltenham my favs, also like Sandown.

For a grade 1 course, Ayr is an absolute dump.

Easily my favourite card too. I often take friends who aren't interested in racing because the variety on offer keeps them properly interested.

The BHA constantly moan about racegoers hating small fields, but in fact, the casual racegoer seems to dislike uniformity, and they'd be happier to watch 3 races with 4,12 and 20 runners, than the equivalents with 12 each.

Newmarket is my nearestr course, about 5 miles away to the July course and 5 1/2 to the Rowley. Its handy as I know all the back roads to avoid the traffic on big race days.

Good call redbag.  As has been reported previously, my paddock an excellent proxy for Plumpton as soil and micro-climate very similar.

twomatchpoints - my heart leapt when I read your post, but I first read it as burgers!! I thought here's an end to those pink slabs of condemned  offal that pass for burgers at most racecourses (Goodwood excluded!)

I drive past the Old Lincoln track regular. There is a main road which splits the straight track from the Grandstand. It still intrigues me every time i drive past.

Yeah, if you drive through Galleywood, theres a pub called The running mare at the crossroads, it closed in 1937 (i think), i know Golden miller ran there, you can still make out the racecourse and the running rails are still there.

Had no idea. Used to drive through it quite often when I were a nipper because my grandmother lived in Billericay, and we'd go shopping in Chelmsford.

Yes, that is a far more impressive claim than my meagre effort.

My mate looks over his back garden to the downhill fence at Folkestone.

I like Folkestone, it gets a bad press as a mundane gaff track but I like places like that. It's not all about the glamour meetings, far from it in fact. Us die hards like a bit of spit and sawdust every now and then.

Yeah, i've been to Folkestone more than anywhere else , still like it,nice people.

The first proper race meeting I went to as an adult by myself was Folkestone back in 1986. The next time I went there the following year alot of it had been blown away by the famous "hurricane". There was an old cricket pavillion in the car park that had dissapeared along with a bar by the parade ring. I remember the goldfish pond had survived, but it was mostly a scene of devastation. Racing still went ahead though. Back then, there were 3 or 4 rows of bookies for a miserable Monday afternoon, and bookies joints on the infield ! I was there the day Barney curlys horse won him a million quid, the atmosphere was electric.

I've had some freaky placepot results at Folkestone in the past. One was every favourite being placed and it paid just over £200.

Bath is without doubt the worst racecourse I've ever been to, that is one scruffy gaff track. Bad horses, bad facilities, I'll never go back there.

Must admit I've been to many courses far worse than Bath, although agree the quality of racing there is diabolical.

LOL - When I owned a horse, she turned out to be a course specialist at Bath - 2 wins from 2 starts. The only other place at which she managed to win was a couple of sellers at Wolverhampton.

When anyone asks what was the best part of being an owner, I always say the glamour.
